What would be makeup essentials for a beauty newcomer? What should they start out with?

If they’ve NEVER used makeup, I would give them some cheaper items and let them try and get a feel for what kinds of things they like (or don’t like). I would also consider a good eyeshadow palette in the $20-40 range.
