theBalm Balm Jovi Face Palette
Rock Out with Your Shadows Out
theBalm Balm Jovi Face Palette ($39.50 for 0.76 oz.) includes twelve eyeshadows (0.38 oz., which is just over 0.03 oz.), one highlighter (0.14 oz.), one blush (0.10 oz.), and two lip colors (0.14 oz.). It will launch today on theBalm’s website.
Metal-ica is a silvery-white with a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation, though the texture was on the powdery side; very soft and dense. We’re definitely seeing a lot of these shades for the holidays; here are a few that compare favorably: MAC Crystal Avalanche, Buxom Sheepdog, NARS Flowers 1-3, and theBalm Sassy.
Adagio is a pale neutral beige with a matte finish. It had nice color payoff, and it was smooth and soft without being powdery. It works well layered over some of the more shimmery shades to tone down the finish if so desired. MAC Brule is very similar. theBalm Matt Smith is slightly pinker. Urban Decay Walk of Shame is pinker. MAC Blanc Type is lighter. Inglot #390 is darker.
Blink 1982 is a muted burgundy with a hint of plum/mauve and a golden shimmer. The texture on this shade was a bit dry, so the color payoff was not quite opaque. Lancome Color du Jour is darker but similar. MAC Trax is more purple.
Iron Maid-in is a dirty gold with a metallic, frosted finish. It was not fully opaque, but it had good pigmentation overall. The texture wasn’t as buttery as other theBalm eyeshadows. Chanel Eclaire is more golden. MAC Sweet & Sour is darker. Giorgio Armani #1 is similar, less metallic. theBalm Snobby is more matte and yellow.
Allegro is a medium brown with yellowed undertones and a matte finish. It’s soft enough to be easy to blend, but not so soft as to be powdery. It had good color payoff. Dior golden Savvanah is a bit darker, slightly grayer, but similar. Urban Decay Naked is less yellow. These were the only two shades that really fit the bill out of all. these. browns.
The Stroke is a dark navy blue with a satiny finish. It had so-so color payoff, because it was on the drier side. It performed better on the lid, and it blended out easily. Bare Escentuals Shaken Not Stirred is similar but a bit darker. MAC Lunar is bluer. Bobbi Brown Blue Onyx is similar. This is not an uncommon shade of blue.
Lead Zeppelin is an olive green with olive and green shimmer over a frosted finish. It had good color payoff, and while very soft and smooth, it was a smidgen powdery. Tarina Tarantino Dandy Lion is greener, lighter. Bare Escentuals Speaker Box is darker, less olive. theBalm Wocka, Wocka is more metallic but similar in color. Inglot #419 is a bit greener.
Moderato is a purple-burgundy with a matte finish. The texture was a little dry, and the resulting pigmentation was so-so. It performed a lot better on the eye, and I didn’t have any trouble with the pigmentation there–I hardly had to use any to get deep color. theBalm Sexy is browner. MAC Real Drama is similar. MAC Rich Core is similar but frosted.
rem is a smoky medium purple with gold-copper shimmer-sheen. It’s an interesting, complex color. It had good color payoff and a soft, smooth texture. Bobbi Brown Black Violet is similar when sheered out. Bare Escentuals Romp is less pink.
Alice Copper is a rich burgundy-red with orange-brown undertones and a frosted finish. It had really rich pigmentation and was somewhat powdery. Chanel Eclosino is less shimmery. Maybelline Pomegranate Punk is more burgundy. Make Up For Ever #17 is more metallic. Inglot #452 has a more metallic finish but is very similar.
Presto is a dark brown with burgundy-ish undertones and a hint of warmth. It has a matte finish, and the color payoff is good. It’s just soft enough to be blendable and pigmented, but it’s not at all powdery. Bobbi Brown Cocoa Berry is similar. Bare Escentuals Foreshadow is a little darker. theBalm Mahna-Mahna has more of a sheen and less red in it.
Third Eye Blinded is a warm, light peach with a fairly frosted finish. The pigmentation was excellent, and the texture was so soft and easy to blend. This worked well as a highlighter. theBalm Swedish Pancakes is less frosted, more metallic, but fairly similar. MAC Naked Lunch has more beige in it. MAC Jest is less peach. Estee Lauder Violet Underground is darker. Chanel Complice is close.
Solid Gold is a slightly paled, warm gold with a shimmer-sheen finish and a hint of beige coloring. It has plenty o’ color, so it will show up on all skin tones. This shade wore for eight hours without fading or separating. MAC Chez Chez Lame is the closest I could think of, but it is a little lighter. theBalm Mary Lou-Manizer is a bit yellower.
Don’t You Want Me is a warm coral-pink with a matte finish. It had decent color payoff, and it is somewhat buildable. The texture was a little dry, but it seemed to blend out easily enough. It wore for eight hours with minor, but noticeable, fading at that point. MAC Supercontinental is more orange. MAC Fleet Fast has shimmer. Tom Ford Flush is more orange. MAC Immortal Flower is softer, just barely pinker.
Milly is a pale pink with a neutral-gray undertone. It had a matte finish and opaque color coverage. When I tested it, it lasted four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Pure Zen is less pink. MAC Lazy Day is grayer.
Vanilly is bright red with a mostly matte finish and a barely blue undertone. It was richly pigmented and had opaque color coverage. This shade lasted six and a half hours and left behind a soft stain. MAC Eden Rouge is similar. Edward Bess Midnight Bloom is bluer and darker. MAC Ruffian Red is similar. It’s a fairly common shade of red lipstick.
Overall, it’s a good palette, and at the price point, worth checking out and potentially snagging. There were a few shades on the powdery side in the palette, and a couple were less pigmented initially, but when applied to the eye, I found them to apply much, much better (upgraded to fairly pigmented/opaque in color). There’s a good mix of textures–matte, frosts, shimmers–and very fall-appropriate colors.

What a gorgeous palette! Your look with the red lip is stunning!
Thank you!
Some of the colours in this palette aren’t colours I’d wear (the cheek and lip shades, mostly) and I’ve so many dupes for some of the others but I am totally craving Lead Zeppelin and I really love that eye look you have done, Christine. TheBalm is great at packaging a whole lot of “wow” into a thin, practical (even if it is cardboard) palette.
It’s funny that cardboard packaging seems to be the most useful/practical overall. You can drop it from six feet over tile and it absorbs the impact so well!
I like how opaque the lip colors look. I hope this isn’t as limited as the Muppets palette from last year. I was able to get one & one of the theBalm and the Beautiful, which I have never used… lol
I know they’re doing a limited release (I guess in some ways, it’s a soft release) today and then more to come in a couple of weeks.
I am so happy to see such a good rating on this palette. Truth be told, I thought it was going to be a huge flop!
I like the fact that the colours don’t look so dark and harsh. I hope to pick this one up very soon.
I can’t remember theBalm having a major flop before, not that I have reviewed their range extensively, just nothing is sticking out!
Me either everything i have purchased from them has been awesome
Sigh, as much as I like the idea of a whole face palette, I can never find one that I think is practical for me. The eye shades here seem lovely with a good mix of neutrals and color, but then they lose me on the rest. The blush and lighter lip color are just not going to work for my NC42 skin.
Well, if it’s any upside, there are a lot of eyeshadows 😛
I love a lot of the colours and those I don’t I still like, and I love the looks you’ve done with this… but despite that I have absolutely no inclination towards it. Something about the whole thing doesn’t seem to mesh for me.
Not that it matters since I can’t get my hands on theBalm where I live anyway!
Aww, I’m sorry they’re not accessible for you, Nicoco 🙁
Well, they give me an excuse to travel over to Germany and I will never complain about that!
… Though apparently they have some tB stuff in Next which I normally never check so that might be why I don’t see it around.
Some of the colors in the palette remind me of the colors I bought to wear to the prom, especially the Alice Cooper one! Such a pretty plum shade. I had a dress all picked out to match but I never got to go to the prom. I really wanted to go with Delbert Twitchel.. he was the most gorgeous boy in my school, and he was the captain of the precision combine drill team. I was so sure that Dilbert was going to ask my that I turned down Cyril Mountbatten. My daddy didn’t like Cyril anyway because he was British. Daddy said the relationship would never work out on account of the language barrier… He was a very caring and ignorant man. Well, finally, it got to the day before the prom and Delbert *still* hadn’t asked me so I marched across a crowded cafeteria, stared him straight in the eye and said, “Delbert, what gives?” He said, “Jenny McCoy. That’s why I am taking her to the prom.” So I never got to wear my eyeshadow like the Alice Cooper one, which I think I would have paired with a color like the Milly pink in this palette too. I also really like the Lead Zepellin one… Green eyeshadows look great on you, Christine!
Okay I wanted this as soon as I saw it on here the other day just for the rocker shadow names, but now seeing the swatches, it is definitely a MUST HAVE!! Gorgeous – I love every single shade 😀
Yay!
I was not impressed with this palette until I saw your eye look with it. It looks great!
Thanks, Niche!
Yeah me too, I so want the eye look Christine did!!! Just rushed over to their website to order it.
just placed an order:) love the palette and the names soo much!
Hope you love yours, Kitten!
*sigh* The names are still driving me nuts – there’s kitschy, and then there’s over the top cheesy – but the quality is good. I’m really tempted. Not sure if either lip product would work for me, though – one’s too pale and one’s too warm. But the eyeshadows are lovely.
I guess I am lucky that I usually ignore most of the names/themes/etc. so even if it’s not my thing, it doesn’t bother me. Tape over the names? Get edgy and scribble over them? LOL.
The eye makeup look you did is amazing!
Thanks, Marilyn!
I just ordered mine 🙂
I kind of collect theBalm palettes! I managed to get the Muppet’s Cast Your Shadow last year, plus the Balmbinis vol 1 and the 3 Shadowy Ladies (thanks to their triple play Friday!).
So glad you were able to snag Cast Your Shadow 🙂
It was a beauty war, I still have scars from the battle, but yeah I got it!!!
This one was a lot easier to catch, and I already received a shipping confirmation. I’m excited!!
I love the names of these colours!
They are fun!
Is rem a dupe for MAC’s hypnotizing? Love the palette btw
Less gray, more multi-colored in a way. It has a pinker tone overall.
I want TheBalm to start selling lip/cheek colors separately, I’m always impressed with them even if I don’t want the entire palette.
Aw!
These are all exactly my kind of colors, great for my skin tone (except Allegro, which is way way WAY too yellow). Already placed my order 😀
Maybe layered underneath a shimmery color, Allegro will work for you!
This palette would have been perfect if they hadn’t put the cream lip/cheek colors with all of those powders… I can only imagine the mess it will be after using it for awhile.
Hi Beckie,
Actually, theBalm’s palettes prevents this because the palette opens with two flaps, so when you’re not using the lip colors, there is a flap that is closed on top of it.
Rem eyeshadow alone is making this palette worth getting – what a beautiful colour!!
It is!
Christine, is Lead Zeppelin even remotely like UD Cobra? Because if it is, I can probably skip this palette but if not, I’ll be itching to find it (and it may not be easy to find here in Canada).
Lighter, less black in the base color!
I like your makeup looks today! They’re very flattering 🙂
Thanks, Michelley!
According to theBalm, the blush is supposed to be FratBoy, but it doesn’t look quite like it in the swatch. Do you think the formula for the one in the palette is different than the full-sized ones? I have two of them. lol
The formulas are similar, but this definitely seems a bit lighter to me.
I love the colors, especially on, but man, I haaaate the packaging. I wonder if they’ll repackage it, like they have other palettes (like the Muppets).
Do you know if this palette will be sold on Sephora’s website? I’d like to get it during their f & f sale, haha
I don’t think Sephora is carrying any additional theBalm products – they haven’t for sometime now, unfortunately!
oh, so they’re just selling the products they used to sell and not adding more? I see. I wasn’t sure, since they have some theBalm products available online.
I believe so – I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with theBalm at Sephora, but I know that they haven’t stocked any of the recent releases – at least for a year I’d say!
I especially like that they separated the names Milly and Vanilly. Kind of cute, and funny. 🙂
Loved it all! Only thing I was a bit worried about was it looked like on Vanilly there was some bleeding from the color. Or was I wrong? But I like the rest alot! Great job and loved the look too.
I applied with fingertips, so the edge isn’t as crisp if you had used a brush (normally, I apply with a tube, which allows for more precision!), but I did not get bleeding/feathering.
Think I will be getting this. The way I see it, I can make everything but the Vanilly lip colour work and then it is definitely worth it.
*add to Christmas list*
I really like the eyeshadows in this palette.
Milly is ok. I rather not have Vanilly since I already have enough red lippies (I rarely wear this color though!)
Love your eye look for this too! ^^
Thanks, An! 🙂
Ah Christine you always make the best eye shadow color combinations. Love!
Thank you, Rachael! 🙂 Hope you’re well!
Oh wow the packaging on this is too cute! The colors are great as well. I am going to pick up these as stocking stuffers for my daughters!
Their products are all very pigmented and wonderful but, I would feel so silly using their stuff because of the silly packaging. If I were still six, I would have a blast.
I wish you had swatched the colors by columns instead of rows. Particularly since there are specific sections of the palette with Metal, Classical, and Alternative.
I’m assuming all of the metal shadows are more shimmery, the classical ones are obviously matte, and the alternative is also slightly shimmery. Had it been swatched a different way, it would’ve shown that format better in my opinion.
Not judging, I enjoy your swatches immensely as part of my buying process, but it would’ve been nice to see the swatches in order of how the palette is organized.
She swatched them the way she read them, which most people will do when they open this palette. Imo the balm could have done a better job of highlighting the different categories if they wanted people to notice, because I definitely didn’t *shrug*.
Eh, I just think it’s a matter of putting out the swatches quickly, I have the palette myself, and it’s a bit more noticeable in person.
Had she examined the palette further, the Solid Gold luminzier is just a renamed Mary-Lou Manizer, and the Don’t you want me blush is actually renamed Frat Boy.
It says on the back of the palette, probably just didn’t notice at first glance.
Very cute look with Iron Maid-in, Lead Zeppelin, & Alice Copper.
LOVE IT. I’d almost want grab it just for Rem and The Stroke, but I think I have shades similar enough to the rest that it’d be too muc duplication. Still, those lip shades are great!
Ok, I have to say I am in *love* with this palette. Basically every single one of the shades is absolutely to-die-for (I could have done without that frosty white–but then, I just don’t like frosty whites in general). And that Don’t You Want Me Blush=WOW! I thought it was pretty but also pretty basic when I first saw it, but on your cheeks, it really pops nicely! I think this will definitely be my first theBalm purchase!
Seriously Christine, I need to stop visiting your site. It makes me want to buy so many things! These colors look fantastic on you!
LOL! Thanks, Jasmine 🙂
The Balm doesn’t ever really excite me (I think it’s because the size of my UD eyeshadow collection has gotten ridiculous), but I really like that Milly lip color, including the texture. But…I’m not buying a whole palette just for that, haha.
They could have picked a few less rubbish rock bands (Blink 182? Third Eye Blind?) to inspire the shade names. The colours look great though!
You give the best reviews, I always check out your blog before I make any decisions on whether or not I buy a product or not! I ordered the Balm Jovi palette today after reading your review, the eye look you did with the shadows from the palette is so pretty! I love the combinations of shadows you put together that always look amazing, I really liked the look you did with the Urban Decay fun palette too ( you sold me on that palette too!) thanks for all of the great reviews you give us, all of the great tips and tricks and for having the BEST beauty blog!
Aw, thank you so much, Nikki!! 🙂
Cute concept and packaging but..no color named after Bon Jovi? that’s so odd.
So,it seems I must have this palette, simply because Iron Maiden is my favourite band. xD
As a rock and roll fan I NEED this! Now that I saw the quality is good, I have no excuse not to run out and buy it!
OMG- this has to be one of your best reviews ever. It’s so helpful! I often stay away from this type of palette but this one really grabs my attention. Lovely! Thanks so much Christine!
Not gonna lie, I just want to get this because of the theme. I would totally wear an eyeshadow called Lead Zeppelin
I ordered this on Thursday 09/06 and it showed up on Saturday 09/08! I admit the ONLY reason I ordered was because I have an obession with makeup and Jon Bon Jovi… it seemed like I had no choice. I haven’t used it yet, but I have done a LOT of admiring it! 🙂
I have a question 😀 first of all incredible review 😀 I won a theBalm product and I can’t decide whether to get this one the Nude’tude palette. I don’t own any of the Naked palettes. I do have a lot of shadows though 😀 what would be your recommendation, Im having a hard time deciding. Thank you 🙂
I’d say this one 🙂
Wow! Thank u for the quick response 😀 is there a reason why? Sorry :/ I just value your opinion, been reading your reviews for as long as I can remember <3
More variety 🙂
So glad I found this. Amazing review!
I still love this palette, the well performing cheek and lip products do it for me. Can’t wait until I can get back to Australia and buy it!!
What camera do you use to take these photos? Thanks! xo
Nikon D3s
This palette is currently on sale (until 5 am PST) at birchbox.com for $25, so I had to buy it! Thank you for all of your amazing reviews; you’re my holy grail when it comes to purchasing products. 🙂
I am SO incredibly tempted to get this one !!! I’m looking at it for an 11 day vacation that we’re going on in the end of February, mainly because I don’t want to carry around 2 or 3 different palettes lol ! The only other one I’m wanting to take is 1 of my Bare Minerals ready quads. How do you think this would be for travel Christine?
I think it would travel well! 🙂
You look ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS in this palette!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like it really brings out your skin tone!!! Uh! I cant stop staring at ur eyes!!! Lol
