Round-up: MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection Overview & Thoughts

MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection<
MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection

Now available at:  NORDSTROM, MACY’S

Will also launch at: Bloomingdale’s, Dillard’s

MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection launches online on May 15th and in-stores on May 22nd in U.S./Canada. For international locations, it appears to have released in Europe, but the date given is “May 2014.” Overall, it’s a really good collection in regards to quality, though the unique packaging seems to be the real star here. I think the Extra Dimension formula here is the best I’ve seen from the brand; the softest/smoothest with none of the slight dryness of past shades. The colors are on the more muted/duller side, which may or may not be your cup of tea.

BEST PERFORMING: Enchanted One (A), Mystical (A). Extra Dimension Eyeshadows (As), Pearlglide Eyeliners (As)
WORST PERFORMING: Pet Me, Please (C), Peachstock (B-), Modern Lure (B)
MOST UNIQUE: Fathoms Deep, Soul Serenade
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Clear Water, Mystical, Sea Worship

MAC Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzer

MAC Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzer
MAC Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzer

MAC Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzer ($33.00 for 0.31 oz.) is described as a “soft brick tan with a touch of shimmer.” It’s a medium, orange-brown with strong, warm undertones and a golden shimmer. Guerlain Bronzer (LE, $69.00) is more matte. Urban Decay Bronzer (P) is less yellow. Guerlain Moyen Brunettes (05) (LE, $75.00) is darker, more matte. MAC Hibiscus Kiss Bronzer (LE, $25.00) is slightly darker. Urban Decay Naked Flushed Bronzer (P) is similar. Dior Coral Glow Bronzer (LE) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

As mentioned in the review for Aphrodite’s Shell, the formula is supposed to wear for ten hours and have a luminous finish. The texture of this shade was softer and easier to work with; it was soft, somewhat silky, and blendable on the skin. It had better color payoff, though it was still a sheerer product that could be built up for about semi-opaque coverage in three to four layers. The shimmer in this shade was more pronounced, but it didn’t emphasize pores or the skin’s natural texture when I wore it. It only wore for eight hours, which is about average for most face powders, but it is short of the ten-hour wear time claimed.

MAC Alluring Aquatic Nail Lacquers

MAC Neptune Nail Lacquer
MAC Neptune Nail Lacquer

MAC Neptune Nail Lacquer ($17.50 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “tarnished gold.” It’s a medium-dark, frosted aged gold with yellowy undertones and a green-ish/brown sheen. It reminded me a lot of MAC’s Old Gold pigment in nail polish form. It had fully opaque color in two coats, and it applied evenly and had very minimal brush strokes. Revlon Rose Gold (LE, $8.49) is much more muted. MAC Immortal Gold (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. ORLY Flare (P, $5.00) has larger shimmer, different finish. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Shimmerfish Nail Lacquer ($17.50 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “sparkling aluminum.” It’s an almost warm-toned silver with copper flecks of sparkle. It had a very metallic, high-shine finish that was reflective and satin at the dry down. It had full color coverage with two coats of polish, and it applied evenly and didn’t pool along the edges. The visible brush strokes were very minimal, which was a surprise. MAC Sinfully Sweet (LE, $16.00) has a yellower base. Zoya Jules (P, $9.00) is warmer, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Submerged Nail Lacquer ($17.50 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark teal chrome.” It’s a medium-dark, navy blue with a teal micro-shimmer and flash. This one didn’t apply as nicely as the other two, as there were visible brush strokes and some unevenness, though the color coverage was opaque after two coats. Color Club First Looks (P) is much darker. China Glaze Deviantly Daring (LE, $7.50) is darker, more teal. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Aphrodite’s Shell Extra Dimension Bronzer

MAC Aphrodite's Shell Extra Dimension Bronzer
MAC Aphrodite’s Shell Extra Dimension Bronzer

MAC Aphrodite’s Shell Extra Dimension Bronzer ($33.00 for 0.31 oz.) is described as a “golden bronze with a touch of fine shimmer.” It’s a muted, medium golden brown with a soft, golden shimmer and satin finish. It had warm, yellow undertones. Urban Decay Bronzer (P) is warmer, darker. Tarte Park Ave. Princess (P, $29.00) is darker, browner. MAC Love, Rihanna (LE, $25.00) is less shimmery. NARS Laguna (P, $36.00) is a touch darker. MAC Refined Golden (P, $25.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The formula is described as long-wearing (specifically a whopping “ten hours”) and as having a “luminous” finish. This is going to be a shade that is best for very fair to light complexions; it just barely shows up at all on my skin tone (medium or NC25). The texture is thin, a little dry, though “smooth” to the touch, but the product doesn’t easily loosen from the surface, so the initial coverage is sheer. It’s somewhat buildable, but it takes several layers and a scratchier brush (which helps to get more product off of the surface of the pan). The color seemed to last for around eight hours (it was more visible in person than in photos, so I was able to track the wear, thankfully!), but it didn’t get to ten.

MAC Goddess of the Sea Lipstick

MAC Goddess of the Sea Lipstick
MAC Goddess of the Sea Lipstick

MAC Goddess of the Sea Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “dark vibrant violet [with a Cremesheen finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark purpled berry with subtle, cool undertones and a soft, natural finish. Bite Beauty Burgundy (P, $28.00) is darker, brighter. MAC Romantically Inclined (LE, $16.00) is very similar. MAC Feel My Pulse (LE, $16.00) is brighter. MAC Bust Out (LE, $16.00) is slightly purpler. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lydia (P, $18.00) is lighter, pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It had mostly opaque color coverage, which applied evenly and smoothly without streaking or settling into lip lines. The consistency was lightly creamy but not heavy, so it is comfortable to wear and doesn’t feather over time. On me, this shade wore well for five hours and was just slightly drying. Unfortunately for me, Cremesheen lipsticks tend to be a little drying, but others find them hydrating. As is typical, it is vanilla-scented with no discernible taste. If you missed this when it launched on MAC’s website, the collection will still launch at other retailers next week and in-stores/at counters on the 22nd. You can see the reviews of the other lipstick shades from the collection here.

MAC Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eyeshadow

MAC Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eyeshadow
MAC Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eyeshadow

MAC Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($19.50 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone dirty sea foam green.” It’s a medium-dark, subtly yellow-toned green with a golden, frosted sheen. Sleek MakeUP Fauna (P, $9.99) is darker, less metallic. Ulta Sage (P, $10.00) is lighter, warmer. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful #2 (P) is darker, matte. NARS Delphes #3 (LE, $24.00) is less metallic. MAC Sweet & Sour #2 (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Applied dry, it was semi-sheer, and applied damp, it was fully opaque. The texture was soft, buttery, and smooth, so it was easy to apply and blend out on the skin. It wore well for seven hours before starting to fade just slightly–and MAC touts the wear of the formula at six hours. If you missed this when it launched on MAC’s website, the collection will still launch at other retailers next week and in-stores/at counters on the 22nd. You can see the reviews of the other shades here.
