My Tips

I like using pencil concealers or more liquid-y concealers. Pencil is great, because the tip makes it easy to be precise and can easily be carried with you on the go, while liquid ones can help to hydrate and minimize the look of dryness/flakiness on the affected area.

My goal is always to minimize the look but concealing entirely sometimes just doesn’t work depending on the severity of the spot (and sometimes, how dry or flaky it is!). I apply concealer in a thin layer initially, then apply a slightly thicker layer after that. I like to use a flat, firm concealer brush for this initial application.

Sometimes you need to do reverse contouring if it is a raised spot, so that it looks flatter and less raised.

Natural beauty to me always makes me think of skin, so I think base products can often do the most for enhancing the canvas by evening out the color, hiding any slight imperfections from acne (or post-acne) and the like, but one that is light to medium coverage still lets the natural skin come through. I like a buildable foundation, as I can use it lightly all-over and then use more moderate coverage just in the areas I need it.

Finishing powders do a lot to add life to skin that can be tired or dull without making it look really shimmery or highlighted, and they’re very much my secret weapon to faking beautiful skin.

I like to pick one or two features and then bring them out, like if you have really lovely eyes, then bringing out their shape by defining or contouring can be a great thing to do. If you have great cheek bones, lightly highlighting and contouring can really make them pop.

A general rule of thumb is warmer complexions look better in warmer hues and vice versa. I think it’s a good starting point, but just because you have cool undertones doesn’t mean you can’t wear a warm color.

Sometimes it’s not about that one color as it is about how the color works whatever else you have on (both in terms of makeup as well as clothes, accessories, etc.). There are some colors that don’t work as well with my coloring if that was all I wore, but if I pair it with another color, it can work.

I have darker brows but full-on black looks unnatural and very, very dark on me, so I opt for something a little lighter with a touch of warmth. You do have to experiment with shades sometimes to find something that balances well with your natural hair color.

When I have first grabbed product onto the brush, I apply in the middle, not the ends, as a lot of product will get applied on that initial application, so it’s better that I can blend it out to the rest of the brow than start at the edge where it might be too strong.

I like translucent powders when I have a foundation that matches me, but I also keep a setting powder that is slightly darker so I can fix any foundation that might be slightly light.

I like to mist my face with water (or if you prefer, an actual facial mist!) afterward, which helps to take down some of the excess powderiness.
