Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush

Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush
Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush

Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush ($25.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “muted pink beige.” It’s a medium-dark fleshy beige; it’s very skin-like in its color, and it has a nearly matte finish. There is only a hint of rosiness; if you have pinker undertones, this might be more apparent on your skin than against my yellower undertones. It has more beige in it compared to MAC Brit Wit, which looks pinker compared to this. MAC Darkly My Dear is a few shades darker and browner. It is extremely similar to Tarte Exposed, though slightly less pink. Korres Natural is browner.

The powder is very finely-milled and soft to the touch. It applies smoothly and blends out effortlessly, and because of the naturalness of the color, it’s impossible to overdo. I love blushes in this color family, because they act as a my-cheeks-but-better kind of color. They merely accentuate and emphasize the natural tones of the skin. This lightness of this color means it works best on fair to medium skin tones, while medium-dark to dark may find it to disappear against their skin tone (blushes in this tone but several shades darker would work for the darker end of the spectrum). I was really pleased with the wear of this shade; eight hours without fading.

Chanel Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Spring 2012: Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as “plum.” It’s an ever-so-slightly muted raspberry plum with a healthy shine and semi-opaque color coverage. MAC Craving is a bit darker. Maybelline Bit of Berry is slightly brighter. MAC Positively Dashing is similar in color but has a frostier finish. MAC Red Dwarf is more opaque and darker. Dior Ruby is redder.

The Rouge Coco formula is good but falls short of some of the brand’s claims, primarily hydration, which it doesn’t provide–it’s neither drying nor moisturizing. The color range is typically semi-opaque to opaque with a lightweight feel. Destinee wore for around four hours and was comfortable to wear.  I think this kind of color is supremely flattering across skin tones, both in terms of undertones and color.  It’s not too dark or vampy, so it won’t feel too bold against even the palest of skin, but it has enough color and oomph to complement darker skin tones, too.

SleekMakeUp Original Palette

5 Life-Changing Products from the UK

I typed this post up with the though what local to me products do I reach for on an almost daily basis and what products would I wholeheartedly recommend without a second thought. Truth be told the list was rather large but I have scaled it back to just five must have products!

SleekMakeUp Original Palette (£6.49)

Most palettes come with a running theme, such as neutral, smoky, or brights but this 12-pan palette has nearly all the colors covered. The original palette has a vast array of shades from bright to neutral that will easily carry you from day to night all encased in a slim compact with a sizable mirror. Each eyeshadow is highly pigmented and mineral based. The black eyeshadow in this palette has to be one of the most pigmented I have ever stumbled across, and it can double up as an eyeliner if you apply it wet.  It’s the perfect eye palette to keep in your handbag for any occasion!

Gosh Lipstick (£6.49)

Gosh lipsticks are all highly pigmented, come in a variety of finishes, apply with ease, and wear comfortably throughout the day without drying out the lips.  I get around four hours of wear from each application, but I am a habitual re-applier so you may find you get longer from each application. Unlike some drugstore brands, these are not highly scented, which I know some may find offensive. My personal favorite shade by Gosh is Darling, as not only can it be worn as a nude milky lip shade, but I also find it works particularly well as a lip eraser if you apply, blot, and then apply your chosen lip color on top. Gosh are particularly good at launching limited edition shades for each season to coincide with runway trends. Another shade to look out for is Gosh Tropical Pink that looks just wonderful on all skin tones.

Accessorize Bronzer Duo (£6.00)

As you might have noticed, I like my products to work hard and have more than one use; anything that can double-up has my attention. Accessorize Bronzer Duos are baked bronzers that are very similar in texture and finish to MAC’s Mineralize Skinfnishes, only with a much reduced price tag.  These are branded as bronzers, one shade in the duo tends to be far too light to do any bronzing and is best suited as a highlighting product, which makes it a multi-tasking product. You can apply the light shade as a highlighter, the darker shade as a bronzer, or sweep both shades together. My personal favourite is the Laguna shade that consists of a pink-toned bronze shade combined with a champagne toned section.

Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Apocalypse and Lovechild

This spring, Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) adds two new shades to the permanent range: Apocalypse (deep berry) and Lovechild (pale pink hue). I reviewed this formula here when it first debuted last year. The formula is supposed to be long-wearing, provide opaque color, have a glossy shine, be moisturizing, and not feather.

  • Apocalypse is a deep, purple berry with a glossy shine and mostly opaque color. The color doesn’t apply evenly, so it can look a little patchy if you’re not careful and does settle into lip lines a bit. MAC Riveting Rose is similar but a touch redder. MAC Night Violet seems really close, too, but with less of a shine.
  • Lovechild is a light-medium pink with a subtle blue-base. It has opaque color coverage and applies evenly. MAC Dress It Up is a touch lighter and bluer-based. MAC Royal Azalea is much lighter. OCC Femme is several shades lighter. MAC Behave Yourself is slightly cooler-toned and doesn’t apply as evenly.

As you might expect, sharpening these can be an exercise in frustration, as you will waste product while sharpening and the creamy consistency means the product gets stuck in the sharpener and smears easily (so it doesn’t just cleanly lift from the sharpener).  This is the major downside to this formula (and it is a common problem with creamy pencil products).  Apocalypse wore for five hours with a subtle residual stain, while Lovechild wore for three hours.  I do find the formula to be moisturizing, opaque, and not have any bleeding/feathering issues.  Both of these have a healthy shine, though Lovechild has the highest shine–more like a gloss.
