NYX Rose Lipstick

NYX Rose Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is an ultra frosted rosy pink with lighter rose shimmer. This is one of the frostiest lipsticks I can remember trying. MAC Whirls & Twirls has a similar frost level, but it’s sheerer (and the colors do not compare). Revlon Carnation is pinker, darker. Rimmel Dizzy is pinker, less frosted. MAC Hot Gossip is warmer, lighter.

The color coverage is mostly opaque, but because of the high level of frost present in the formula, it is very dry and difficult to apply. It does not want to slide on, so the color deposits unevenly and the shimmer tends to look chunky. I found this particular shade to be drying when worn as well, which is a huge downside. It was hard to wear for the full four hours that it clung to lips, and afterward, I really had to race for the lip balm to rehydrate my lips!

Bobbi Brown Nude Pink Blush

Bobbi Brown Nude Pink Blush
Bobbi Brown Nude Pink Blush

Bobbi Brown Nude Pink Blush ($24.00 for 0.13 oz.) is described as the “palest pink.” While new, it’s being added to the permanent range, so you don’t have to worry about it selling out! 🙂 I would describe it as a blue-based, cotton candy pink–that’s just slightly muted. NARS Gaiety is much cooler and bluer. NYX English Rose is less blue-toned. MAC So Sweet, So Easy is lighter. Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink is warmer. Urban Decay Quickie is a little brighter. Chanel Tweed Fuchsia is warmer.

Bobbi Brown’s blush formula is supposed to feel silky and have long-lasting wear. The texture is very soft and smooth–it has a very finely-milled texture that applies with a mostly matte finish. What I really liked was how the matte finish didn’t make this a powdery product, which can often happen with drier, matte textures like this one. It doesn’t look dry or patchy on the cheeks either–it has a very soft, natural appearance without shimmer or sheen. I wore this last week to test out the wear, and this shade managed to last for a solid eight hours. I love that the blush can be used as a standalone product or popped out and inserted into a larger palette–even if it is a third to a half the size of your average blush.

Guerlain Bloom of Rose (162) Rouge Automatique Lipstick

Guerlain Bloom of Rose (162) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a frosted medium-dark pink-plum. Chanel Paradis is a lighter, sheerer version. MAC Troublemaker has a similar color but different finish and is sheer. Chanel Legende is redder. MAC Craving is similar but darker, creamier. Bobbi Brown Plum Rose is darker. Maybelline Bit of Berry is darker and has a creamy finish.

What makes Bloom of Rose special is actually how much more complex it is than it appears to be.  At first glance, it’s just another pink, but then when you go to describe it, you think of roses, plums, pinks, and they all play together here.  The lighter pink shimmer gives it a frosted finish but also serves to lighten the backdrop of pink-plum it sits on.  The color coverage is mostly opaque, and while it still has a subtle sheen common to the formula, it’s not as glossy or as creamy as the majority of the Rouge Automatique range.  I imagine that the frost content gives it that slightly drier consistency.  I wouldn’t describe it as dry, just drier than other Rouge Automatiques.   It still feels lightweight and comfortable to wear, just everything is to a slightly lesser degree.  It wears five and a half hours on me, though, which is longer than anticipated for a shade of this hue.
