How-to Apply Swarovski Crystal / Rhinestone onto Shoes (Heels, Wedges)

A Little Weekend DIY:  Bedazzled Shoes

There was such an overwhelmingly positive response and requests for a how-to on my Swarovski-bedazzled wedding wedges–so here you go! This was the first time I’ve ever done something like this, and the more crafting experience you have, the higher quality your work will be, but even as someone who hasn’t done a craft project in years, like myself, the results were surprisingly satisfactory 🙂 There was a learning curve, so I’ve included all the things I’ve learned in this guide.

I’m not at all an expert at this, and this was my first attempt. I was inspired by a pair of Gucci heels that I saw in Vegas last month. They were, quite possibly, the most stunning, jaw-droppingly gorgeous shoes I have ever laid eyes on. I’m definitely going to attempt creating something using the black crystals next. I thought I’d try it first on a pair of satin wedges (BP Fae, $59.95, also available in black) I picked up for my wedding. They weren’t too pricey, and even if they didn’t turn out perfect, you’d never really see them since the gown goes well past the floor.

What You Need

  • Pair of shoes
  • Flatback Crystals/Rhinestones (approximately 15-40 gross, depending on size of crystals/area to cover)
  • Adhesive (I used E6000, GemTac is also a good pick)
  • Tray (to hold the crystals)
  • Tweezers
  • Plastic Stick

I purchased all of my supplies from Dreamtime Creations. I had no problems with the service through them, though there are other crafting websites out there, too. This retailer happened to have a sale at the time, so that’s what made me go with them.

Step-by-step guide/my experience and lessons learned…

Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer

Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer
Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer

Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.37 fl. oz.) is described as a “black chocolate plum.” It’s a deep burgundy-tinted brown with flecks of burgundy, red, and violet shimmer. The finish is just slightly metallic (and some brush strokes are visible under bright light). Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame is redder, less plum, no shimmer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Moulin Rouge is browner, no shimmer. Chanel Vertigo is grayer, less red-tones. Cult Nails Enigmatic is lighter. Estee Lauder Extravagant Night is very similar but has much chunkier sparkle–Twilight is subtle, Extravagant Night is over-the-top.

I can’t remember Bobbi Brown doing nail polish before–not as long as I have been following the brand. Does anyone else remember? The formula is on the thicker side, though it’s not so thick that it’s goopy or problematic. The thicker consistency allows for nearly opaque color coverage with just one coat, but I needed two for full opacity, which is what the swatches show. It dries to a noticeably shiny finish; a top coat would still be necessary for a high-gloss finish, though.  Since this formula is new-to-me, I tested out the wear of Twilight, and my results were a full week with no chipping and just minor tip wear; these results were the same whether I used a base/top coat or just applied to nails alone.

Bobbi Brown Firefly High Shimmer Lipgloss

Bobbi Brown Firefly High Shimmer Lipgloss

Bobbi Brown Firefly High Shimmer Lipgloss ($23.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is described as a “gold ivory with opal flecks.” It’s a virtually colorless gloss with warm white and iridescent opal shimmer–looks like a wintry mix of silver, white, and lilac. There’s no real color in the base, just lots and lots of shimmer, but on, it’s definitely apparent you’re wearing something–it’s highly reflective and looks a little pink-ish. MAC She-zam is more silver-shimmered. NARS Luxor is similar in color and sheen, though it is milkier. MAC Frozen Lame has a lot more white shimmer.

Long-time readers will know that this is one of my favorite formulas–it has a ridiculous amount of sparkle and dazzle combined with a non-sticky and comfortable to texture that’s not too thick or too thin.  These glosses typically last a full four hours and sometimes longer on me; Firefly wore for a full four hours, which is noteworthy for a gloss that’s fairly sheer in color.  The shimmer is so high that it’s almost semi-sheer to semi-opaque in color because of the coverage the shimmer yields.  It’s moisturizing, and I like that it doesn’t get sticky over time.  Bobbi Brown’s glosses come with a doe-foot applicator, slightly more gloss than the average gloss, and are mint-scented.
