The Best & Worst of Urban Decay Fall 2017 Vice Lipsticks

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks
Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks

Here’s a look at how well the newest additions to the Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) lineup did! In terms of where one can find them, five are exclusive to the brand’s website (Caliente, Control, Hawkeye, Plague, Heartache), while ten are available at other retailers. Also: a few of the shades were previously released as limited edition shades.

The Best & Worst of Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters

Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter

Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter

Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter ($34.00 for 0.24 oz./0.28 oz.) is available in two individual shades along with four duos. The formula is described ranging from “subtle dayglow to insanely supercharged” with a “cream-powder hybrid” formula that feels “weightless” and is long-wearing. They can also be used on the eyes, body, lips, and so forth, per the brand. They feel like a traditional powder, but they have a smooth, moderately dense texture that doesn’t kick up a lot of excess product in the pan but also does not feel stiff or difficult to pickup with the brush. The finishes varied from shade to shade; where Metal Moon was the most subtle and had a satin-to-pearl finish, Trophy Wife was the most over-the-top with chunky, obvious glitter and less base color compared to the other shades.

The duos featured a light-to-moderate highlighter on the left and then a more sparkly, metallic highlighter on the right with the exception of Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule, where the left shade (Ginger Binge) was more intense (possibly owing to the richer color and payoff). In general, I found the left, more subtle side of each duo to be sheer to semi-sheer, somewhat buildable, whereas the right, more metallic side was substantially more pigmented. All of the more intense highlighters (Trophy Wife and the right side of the duos) did accentuate the look of my skin’s natural texture to some degree.

For use on the eye, they worked better with a slightly dampened brush, as it gave the powder a bit more binding powder for better adherence to the lid, but the ones I tried on the lid were blendable and easy to apply with no real concerns from the application itself other than the potential for fallout over time.

Apres Ski Glow Collection

Becca Apres Ski Glow Collection Eye Lights Palette ($45.00 for 0.35 oz.) includes seven eyeshadows inspired by the brand’s famous powder highlighters, just designed “specifically for the eyes.” I think that one of the strengths of Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed highlighters is their texture–that creamy, smooth, and velvety-feel that is almost effortless when it comes to blending and diffusing on the skin. That doesn’t exist in this palette; the textures are dry, powdery, and prone to sheering out. The eyeshadows only adhered decently to the lid with a dampened brush but were barely-there washes when I attempted to use them dry. When I tried using them dry over eyeshadow primer, they were still miserable to work with.

Cover FX Rose Gold

PPermanent. $42.00/0.50 oz.

Rose Gold is a medium, rosy copper with warm, golden undertones and a pearly sheen. The finish was more metallic on this shade with medium, buildable coverage that was really as pigmented or as sheer as desired--it just depended on how much one applied. Read full review.

Holiday 2017

Bite Beauty Holiday 2017 The Perfect Bite Set ($25.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a limited edition, holiday gift set that features four, miniature-sized (about a third of a full-sized shade) Amuse Bouche Lipsticks housed in a ruby red, metallic tin. Long-time Bite fans may find that this set is too redundant compared to past years’ sets, though for those who are newer to the brand and/or formula, the set is a great way to try out the formula at a great price (less than the cost of one shade!). I definitely would love to see Bite explore more mini sets; like a cooler-toned set, warmer-toned set, or maybe by color family like a berry set, neutral set, and red set. The shades here were fairly consistent with their permanent counterparts, though I found Honeycomb to be ever-so-slightly less warm-toned.

Value

A full-sized Amuse Bouche Lipstick retails for $26.00 and contains 0.15 oz. or $173.33/oz. This set contains $34.67 worth of product.

Edita

Tom Ford Beauty Edita Boys & Girls Lip Color Sheer ($36.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a light-medium, golden peach with warm undertones and pink-to-gold shifting pearl. It had more of a duochrome sheen that was noticeable in person. It had sheer coverage that applied evenly and was comfortable to wear. The consistency was thin, lightweight, and smooth without being too slippery. It lasted for two hours and was lightly moisturizing.

Formula Overview

$36.00/0.07 oz. - $514.29 Per Ounce

The Lip Color Sheer formula is supposed to have a "semi-sheer effect" with a "creamy" and "hydrating" formula. They are a sheerer lip color, which may or may not be one's cup of tea; if you are looking for pigment, look elsewhere, but if you're someone who likes sheerer coverage, lightweight, hydrating textures, then it might be a formula for you. There are several shades in the range that have a more transformative effect, as they contain a lot of shimmer/sparkle or have a more duochrome or iridescent-like finish. There are others, typically deeper, richer hues (reds, berries, etc.) that are more medium coverage. The wear ranged a lot from as short as two hours to as long as five hours but most wore around three hours. The formula is lightly hydrating with a very lightweight feel on the lips. They are vanilla scented but have no discernible taste.
