MAC Go Get Nude Up Close & Personal Lip Kit ($36.50 for 0.25 oz.) is a new, limited edition set that features three full-sized lip products. Both the lipstick and lipgloss have been released previously (as limited edition shades), while the lip pencil is part of the permanent range (yay for adding a permanent swatch!). When applied altogether (layered), the end result gets dominated by the intensity of Spice coming through, so if one wants more of an ombre effect, I’d recommend just lining the edges of the lips over filling them in. I found that the addition of the gloss resulted in some of the product separating along my lip lines, unfortunately.

Dandy Apple

Dandy Apple is a darker, pink-peach with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. The lipstick had rich color coverage in a single pass, which applied evenly to my lips and didn’t drag during application. The texture was lightweight, creamy enough not to tug but didn’t feel slippery on. The color lasted well for four and a half hours on me and was lightly hydrating over time.

MAC Lipstick comes in a variety of finishes, and the pigmentation and wear tend to be dependent on the finish. The sheer finishes, like Lustres, tend to wear for only a couple of hours and have sheer coverage (as designed) and are non-drying.

Some of the original Matte shades have a stiffer, drier formula, while newer ones have a more velvety, silicone-feel to them, and the latter are creamier, more comfortable to wear, and easier to apply, but most Matte shades are quite pigmented and long-wearing, though some are drying.

The Amplified and Satin finishes tend to have good pigmentation, lightly creamy to moderately creamy consistencies with a bit of shine, and moderate to long wear with deeper, richer shades wearing longer. The Frost and Metallic finishes have the most variance between shades with coverage ranging from semi-sheer to opaque with average wear and non-drying to slightly drying formulas. All MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Saint No Angel

Saint No Angel is a soft peach with warm undertones and fine, gold and pink pearl. It had a moderate amount of shimmer–more shimmer than base pigment–that yielded “medium” coverage to my eye (a lot of my lip freckle appears to have disappeared!). The texture was smooth, medium in thickness (but not heavy to wear), and moderately tacky as the formula tends to be. Despite having a milkier, paler base color, it didn’t emphasize my lip lines and distributed evenly across my lips. It wore well for four hours and was hydrating over time.

The Lipglass formula is supposed to be “pigmented, very shiny and can impart subtle or dramatic color” that can be worn “on its own, over lip pencil or lipstick” and will “condition lips.” MAC could use an update on the description as some shades are more pigmented than others but several are sheerer and likely intended to be that way. The formula has a very glossy, high-shine finish with a light-medium weight and moderate tackiness.

I have found that newer Lipglasses (over the last couple of years) are smoother and not quite as tacky as the formula was many years ago. They wear from three to six hours on me and are usually lightly hydrating. MAC recently updated the shade range and packaging for the range (though the formula was said to be unchanged), so worth noting is that with that packaging change came a reduction in quantity to 0.10 fl. oz. (was 0.17 fl. oz.), which may matter for some but not everyone.

Spice is a medium-dark, rusty brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single stroke, which worked well for getting a precise line along the outer edge of the lips, but the slanted pencil was yielding enough that I had no trouble filling in my lips with the pencil either (I use the slanted edge instead of the pointed tip when filling in). The color adhered well, was very lightweight and thin, so it wasn’t the most forgiving of my natural lip texture, but it didn’t feel like it had shrink-wrapped around my lips either, so I could still move and press them together comfortably. The pencil stayed on well for six hours on its own and was a little drying.
