The Sultry Season: MAC Capricious Lipstick

MAC Capricious Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) is a rosy plum with subtle gold shimmer. MAC describes it as a “fanciful rose plum,” and it has a lustre finish. Lustre finishes are “demi-sheer with wet-look lustre finish … Very slick … Makes lips look soft, smooth, ultra-moist.”

If you can’t tell by the photo, Capricious has been a long-time favorite, and I’ve always found it an infinitely flattering shade. It’s got that pop of natural color that enhances lips but never overwhelms a look. It has a cool-tone edge to it but the play of gold shimmer works well to make it very wearable for both cool and warm undertones.

my thoughts on the formula: MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. I typically get four hours of wear, but some of the lighter lustre and glaze finishes tend to disappear by hour three. Amplified cremes and amplified finishes, however, tend to go beyond four. I find the formula comfortable to wear and not drying (but not moisturizing–a couple of the matte and lustre shades can be drying).

final thoughts: Capricious is such a great way to wear plum without being too dark or bold.  It is as pretty in springtime as it is in fall.  It was one of my first MAC lipsticks and still a favorite.

I love when you do reviews of permanent products that you like! Have to say Plumful is one of my favourite go to easy to wear lipsticks!

yup, you can just stick it on in work and look polished without being ‘too done’ (I’m the only one who wears proper make up, not just liner and mascara!)

This is one of my all time favorites! Looks great with my fair complexion. It also works as a great stain if you just pat some on with your finger. It’s funny that you mention that it has gold shimmer, I can’t see it myself.

This lipstick looks like it’s gotten a lot of love! I love this shade myself. I love when you review MAC’s permanent products. They put out so many collections that the gems in the permanent line get overlooked frequently.

You reminded me how much I like this one! Such a easy, pretty color. On me it is more plummy than on you, but the gold really balances it all out nicely. I think everybody should at least check it out!

How would you say this is in comparison to Cosmo? I have never tried a lustre just cause they’re so sheer, and I have very pigmented lips. Thanks so much! 🙂

Funny how our lips’ pigmentation can change how lipsticks look. Capricious is probably my favorite lip color but since my lips has natural berry pigment Capricious looks darker and plumy-ier on me.
If I want to achieve the lip color you have in the photo I ware Plumful.

I agree it’s so cool that you reviewed a MAC permanent product that we can add to our wish list…Capricious is now definitely on mine!

woah – so freaky that i’d actually gone and bought this yesterday (and i love it already) it’s similar to my natural lip colour but looks better

I love this color. It is one of my standbys. On me, it looks more like a soft red. I absolutely love the way it looks on you. I wish it was that way on me. I guess my lip pigmentation pulls it in a different direction.

Capricious is one of my total favourite MAC lipsticks. It’s a fairly “new” acquisition for me (within the last 2 years) – I don’t change or buy lippies very often but my faves from MAC are Craving, Plumful, 2 LE lipsticks (Total Wow and Laugh a Lot) and Dubonnet.

We have very similar taste- those are some of my favorite colors too! If we both like those same lippies, you might like some of my other favorites- can I suggest them to you? After Party, by Clinique. Maybelline Color Sensational Berry Beautiful, and there is this gloss by Evil Shades that is one of my all-time favorites- it’s called Deadly and it’s one of their Wicked Glosses. It’s a great gloss that lasts and leaves a stain behind.

This color looks sooooo beautiful! Amazing!
Only problem is, I can’t have any color of lipstick, if I have lipstick on it’s like I’m a pornstar or something, really annoying :s Maybe this color will work.. Time for another visit to the Mac store! ^^

I agree that Capricious is a long time favorite shade from MAC. I used this color on my best friend for her wedding. It photographed beautifully, and se didn’t require gloss because of its already high shine quality. Looks especially great on olive complexions.

I went to the MAC store and I wanted to buy this one since it looks absolutely beautiful on you Christine. But unfortunately, when I tried it on, it was way darker than what I expected it to be. It looked really red on me. And I usually don’t really pull off red lipsticks but the lady recommended see sheer instead and that actually worked well on me.. whew. I wouldve hated leaving the store empty handed!

How would this compare to craving? I’ve been looking for a rosy lipstick for a while now. Do you have any suggestions? I’m a NC25-30. Thanks! 🙂

I just bought this and it’s so weird. In the tube itself, the lipstick looks like a more burgundy-wine sort of colour. It is really different from how yours look like! Also, when I applied it, it was not as pinky. But still, it is a gorgeous colour.
