Hare Polish The Tropics are Calling Collection

Hare Polish The Tropics are Calling Collection features five shades inspired by, you guessed it, the tropics. I received about a week ago, and I wanted to wait until today to share them with you, because Hare will be restocking their Etsy shop at 11AM PST today. They will also be launching their fall collection, The Coin Operation (I don’t have swatches, but the brand has shared theirs). Hare Polish retails for $10.00 and each bottle contains 0.50 fl. oz. I applied each shade as recommended by Hare (one of the benefits of indie brands!), which I’ve noted by each shade.

One of the reasons that I really enjoy Hare’s polishes is that they’re not top coats (or they don’t need to be used as such) and can be worn on their own. Most of them tend to have jelly bases, so two to three coats will get you where you need to be–but it depends on how opaque/translucent you want the polish to be. I typically get a week of wear out of Hare’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping. It is, of course, polish loaded with glitter, so removal will be more time-consuming than the average polish. The consistency of these made it easy to apply both thinner and light-medium (in thickness) coats, so three coats didn’t feel or look heavy and thick on (with the exception of Washed Ashore, which was a little thicker relative to the others, and Flight of the Flamingos was the tiniest bit thicker but less thick than Washed Ashore).

Neon Palm is described as a “dusty, muted green jelly base brimming with a mix of neon pink and copper glitter in several shapes/sizes.” It has a green-tinged gray jelly base with coppery-gold and fuchsia glitters in square and hexagon shapes in both medium, small, and micro sizes. There is a very faint dusting of copper shimmer in the background. I applied two light-medium thick coats (as recommended), and the coverage was semi-opaque with some faint translucency. The glitters dispersed somewhat evenly, but if you want a slightly more uniform look, it could use some minor adjustments from pulling some into place. I couldn’t think of anything similar to this shade in my stash.

Dancing Bird of Paradise is described as a “bright cherry red jelly base with a blend of various shapes/sizes of neon pink, satin white, gold glitter, flaky gold shimmer.” It’s a cool-toned, fuchsia-based red jelly base with larger fuchsia hexagon-shaped glitters, flecks of gold glitter in both smaller micro sizes as well as larger flakes. I applied two light-medium thick coats (as recommended) and had mostly opaque coverage with a faint translucency coming through. Each coat had a good amount of glitter, and I didn’t have to push or tug glitter into place, with the exception of one of the larger fuchsia hexagons. It has a lot of smaller-sized glitters, which spread easily across the nail. Hare Polish Leap Light Year has a similar base color (not quite as fuchsia), but the glitter composition is different–you have silver glitters as well as square-shaped glitters. Cult Nails Captivated has larger gold glitter and no large-sized glitter. Zoya Kimmy is more like a frost than a glitter, but it has a similar mix of red/gold, and the red is a bit warmer. Mad Chill is described as a “royal blue jelly base with a mix of various shapes/sizes of neon blue, white and ice blue glitter.” It’s an icy, navy blue jelly base with brighter, almost cyan-hued, blue glitters in various hexagon (maybe square?) shapes), as well as silvery-white square-shaped glitters. The background is dusted in a fine silver-white micro-shimmer. I applied three thin coats (as recommended), which yielded semi-opaque coverage. The glitters spread evenly across the nail without having to be tugged into place. I couldn’t think of any similar shades.

Flight of the Flamingos is described as a “light grey jelly base with those striking neon pink glitters in various shapes/sizes, plus gold glitter and shimmer.” It has a cool-toned, beige jelly base with large square- and hexagon-shaped fuchsia glitters, as well as smaller fuchsia glitters, and a lot of paler gold glitter. It had mostly opaque coverage after applying two light-medium thick coats (as recommended). The larger fuchsia glitters could use some maneuvering to ensure they disperse evenly, though I did not find it necessary on all nails, but it did happen on two of the nails. I couldn’t think of any similar shades.

Washed Ashore is described as a “peachy pink jelly polish with an ethereal mix of ice blue glitter, purple/blue iridescent glitter and silver shimmer.” It’s a soft, light-medium peach with hints of pink jelly base with iridescent glitter in square and hexagon shapes (on the smaller side), along with bits of blue and silver glitters. I applied two light-medium thick coats (as recommended). The consistency was just a bit thicker than the other shades. Because of the glitter composition, I also wasn’t able to think of possible dupes for this shade!

Hare Polish What I Wore to the Revolution Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish What I Wore to the Revolution Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “blend of matte and satin hexes and squares in black, hot pink, and hot orange [with] sparkling silver shimmer.” There are black, red, and orange hexagon and square-shaped glitters in small and medium sizes. There is also silver sparkle in the background. All of the glitters are suspended in a clear base. The mixture reminds me of Las Vegas, actually. China Glaze Razzle Me, Dazzle Me is the only shade I could think of that had a similar feel, but the composition is rather different. See comparison swatches. I wore one coat layered over Revlon’s Rose Quartz, a dirty gold with a pink duochrome sheen (but very subtle), and then I applied two coats alone on my thumb nail so you can get a feel for the density/opacity on its own. It had good coverage in one coat and spread out fairly evenly.

Teen Queen Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a mix of “neon blue glitter and satin baby pink hex and square glitter in several sizes [with] blue shimmer.” It’s a mix of brightened, almost cyan, blue and pink glitters–the pink ones seem to be primarily the larger square and hexagon-shaped glitters, while the blue is across sizes. There’s an iridescent blue shimmer that dances in the background. All of the glitters are suspended in a clear base. I applied one coat over Color Club’s Over the Moon, and then I applied two coats of it alone on my thumb nail. China Glaze Pizzazz is more multi-colored. See comparison swatches.

Hare Polish Bisbee 2.0 Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish Bisbee 2.0 Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “turquoise jelly, accented with bright yellow-golden hexes and squares … plus gold shimmer.” It’s a cool-toned, aqua blue turquoise with square and hexagon-shaped gold shimmer (that turns almost green when it gets covered with the base color) and a fine dusting of gold shimmer. I applied two coats of polish, as the brand advised, and it was semi-opaque and had that signature squishy, slightly translucent jelly look. I couldn’t think of any dupes (not even just a turquoise jelly!).

Leap Light Year Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.)is described as a “bright, squishy cherry red jelly, silver squares in two different sizes and smaller silver hexes.” It’s a brightened, pinky-red jelly base with silver-hued, square-shaped glitters in medium and small size, plus small silver hexagon-shaped glitters. The brand applied three thin coats in their preview swatches, so I followed suit on my ringer finger and did two more medium coats on the rest of my nails, and a third coat would give you a squishier look, though opacity is still very much as expected for a jelly with two regular coats–slightly translucent with good glitter dispersion and coverage. It looks a bit pinker, whereas it becomes a juicier red with three thin coats. Neither of these are dupes, but they were the closest that I could think of: L’Oreal The Queen’s Might doesn’t have glitter and isn’t a jelly (but it has a similar pink-red coloring) and Cult Nails Captivated has gold glitter. Star Tropics Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep, squishy blue jelly, silver squares in two different sizes and smaller silver hexes.” It’s a darkened, medium-dark navy blue jelly base with large and medium, silver, square-shaped glitters and then smaller hexagon-shaped silver glitters. The brand showed three thin coats in their preview swatches, which is what I did with my ring and pinky fingernails, and then two medium coats on my middle finger, and finally, two thin coats on my index finger (so hopefully you have a good idea of the coverage!). The blue looks its densest and richest with three thin coats, and it definitely looks squishier that way, too. There was good glitter coverage every which way I tried, and it was easy to apply. I don’t know of any polishes (from what I’ve seen, of course!) that is like this, but these were all shades that were similar to the base color (but not so much the jelly finish): MAC Blue Gaze, MAC Breezy Blue, Illamasqua Force, China Glaze Manhunt, and Deborah Lippmann I Know What Boys Like. All three had consistency that were typical for jelly finishes–slightly thicker than the average polish but not too thick or goopy. I noticed that Bisbee 2.0 was slightly thicker than the other two. They applied without pooling along the edges, and I found the glitter was actually very easy to apply, as it dispersed evenly as I normally applied the polish–I didn’t have to push and prod it into place to get it across the nail. Star Tropics can look a little uneven if it’s too sheer, though it didn’t seem actually streaky, but I think with the way the glitter is suspended in the polish, it gives that look. From the Hare Polishes I’ve tried thus far, they’ve lasted a week with minor tip wear.

Hare Polish Rococo Grandeur Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish Rococo Grandeur Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “baby blue jelly with soft pink glitter in several shapes and sizes, with gold accents [with blue shimmer].” It’s a grayish, pale blue creamy jelly with small, pale gold glitter and then larger pink glitter in circular, hexagonal, and square shapes. I don’t have a dupe for this, and the only shade that it reminded me of was China Glaze It’s a Trap-eze which has a much whiter base color, more glitter, and very bright/colorful glitter at that.

I had some trouble getting this shade to apply evenly–the base color just looked patchy and uneven no matter how many attempts I made to get everything to play nicely together. I applied two coats of the polish alone, and it had semi-opaque color coverage with good glitter content that spread fairly evenly. It was just that bluish base color that didn’t want to cooperate. The consistency didn’t seem too thick or too thin either (a little thicker than the average polish but as thick as most jelly finishes are), but the problem persisted. Hare’s formula wears a week on me with minor tip wear but no chipping.

Hare Polish Own Your Opulence Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “complex mixture of satin pastels in several different shades, juxtaposed with gunmetal grey, black, and gold [with gold shimmer in a clear base].” There is an assortment of size, shape, and color in this one–there is quite a bit going on! The colors include shades of pink, yellow, gray, and black, plus the gold shimmer in the background. The shapes range from small shimmer and glitter to larger squares and hexagons. All of the glitter and shimmer is suspended in a clear base.

The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so I didn’t have trouble with the polish applying and then pooling along the edge. It disperses somewhat evenly but does require some pulling and tugging to get more even coverage so there aren’t any bald patches. I applied two coats of the top coat alone over my thumb nail and then one coat layered over Color Club Kismet. It had good opacity in a single coat for a layering polish; enough that you could tell it was on and were able to get all the different shapes, sizes, and colors on each nail. I normally see seven days of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping with Hare’s formula.

Hare Polish Return to Nature Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish Return to Nature Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “beige/khaki crelly (creme-jelly) with a mixture of small gold and silver glitters, plus a dusting of small white squares pwith gold shimmer.” It’s a subtly warm-toned beige jelly finish with white, square-shaped glitters, gold and silver glitters–the gold glitter tends to look more subdued and yellowy within the base color. I couldn’t think of any dupes, and China Glaze Fast Track was the only glitter, plus beige, shade that came to mind.

It’s semi-opaque after two coats, as anticipated with the jelly finish, but very even and smooth. The glitter dispersed incredibly evenly across the nail without needing to be pulled into place at all. I loved the consistency on Return to Nature; not too thick or too thin, and very easy to manage–thinner to the average jelly polish–so there was no pooling along the edges or streakiness. I normally get a week of wear with Hare’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

Hare Polish Married to the Monarchy Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish Married to the Monarchy Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “blend of matte teal hexes and squares, rich red hexes and squares in varied sizes [with] silver shimmer.” It’s a mix of large, bright blue and red square and hexagon-shaped glitter with smaller silver shimmer in the background–and all suspended in a clear base. It’s such a cheery mix of colors–and I think it could work over a lot of different base colors.

I applied two coats of the glitter top coat alone on my thumbnail so you can have a better idea of the density and composition of the top coat, and then one coat layered over Revlon Rose Gold. One coat (layered) has quite a bit of glitter, and the glitter distributed fairly evenly and easily despite the larger glitter pieces–I didn’t have to fish them out or anything–and I felt like there was a good balance of blue/red. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it didn’t pool along the edges. I usually get a week of wear out of Hare’s formula with no chipping and minor tip wear.

Hare Polish Hooky at the Hamlet Nail Lacquer

Hare Polish Hooky at the Hamlet Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright shamrock green jelly … with white glitter in different shapes, sizes, and textures, along … glowing-blue hexes and very subtle purple shimmer.” It’s a brightened bluish-teal with white square and hexagon-shaped large glitter pieces and then finer white glitter, blue hexagons, and bluish-purple shimmer. Zoya Zuza has a similar coloring but doesn’t have the white glitters. MAC Ocean Dip is cream (no glitter at all).

The consistency was a little thick–thicker than the average jelly finish–and it took a bit longer to dry down (I actually ended up squishing slightly into my pinky nail with my ring fingernail). The glitters dispersed mostly evenly, but some of them did pull towards the top of my nails on the second coat. It is semi-opaque, as a jelly finish is supposed to be, and if you wanted more opaque color, I’d go with three coats or use a teal base color. I typically get a week of wear out of Hare’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping. The brand should be restocking their spring range within the next week or so!
