When I think about blues for summer, I think of brighter hues from sky blue to pool blue. Here are some of my top favorites this summer… Please share yours with me in the comments!

I have to admit: this was a complete challenge. In fact, it felt unfair trying to narrow down favorites to a mere ten when I was considering around 300 different shades from the past year. As what tends to happen when I start to feel indecisive, I went for favorites across brands and weighted uniqueness slightly more heavily than other factors. But there were some really outstanding formulas released this year! At year-end, I have to give major props to Cult Nails and OCC, both of which had a lot of contenders.

Cult Nails Masquerade Nail Lacquer — so, so multi-dimensional with its gold to rose gold to magenta to green coloring and micro-glitter
Chanel Taboo Le Vernis — a striking, dazzling deep, dark purple that sparkles and catches light like crazy
Marc Jacobs Beauty Petra (140) Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer — a cool-toned, purplish-gray taupe with copper and bronze metallic shimmer
Dior Diablotine (643) Vernis — something about this bold, warm-toned red and its flecks of sparkle captured my attention so, so fiercly this year
OCC Black Metal Dahlia Nail Lacquer — it’s a ridiculous deep, dark metallic red with so much depth
Illamasqua Facet Nail Varnish — taupe with flecks of copper and molten gold sparkle and shimmer–couldn’t even come close to duping this
Cult Nails Faded Nail Lacquer — a flawless, pale cool-toned gray cream–so difficult to this well
Color Club Beyond Nail Lacquer — a soft black with holographic shimmer (and all of the accompanying Color Club holographic shades were beyond fantastic, too)
Urban Decay Zodiac Nail Color — I fell head-over-heels for this smoky, forest green with flecks of sparkle and shimmer
Zoya Amy Nail Lacquer — a glowing–truly, it just felt like it was illuminated from within–reddish-orange with molten gold sparkle

5 Sparkling Blue Hues

I tried to pull a good variety in blues, from cobalt, purplish blues to sky blues to your bold, bright blues–and not just eyeshadows! I had to pick an eyeliner, because it’s a great way to add a bold pop of color without going full-on blue. If you want to see my picks together, the comparisons.

Color Club Cosmic Fate Nail Lacquer

Color Club Cosmic Fate Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is warm-toned, peachy beige with holographic shimmer. I didn’t have any dupes for this, and while I still tried to find similar shades at least in color (but not the holographic effect), I didn’t have any strong contenders. These were the closest, but they’re just not very similar at all. China Glaze Knotty was the closest, but it was darker, sheerer, and of course, no holographic shimmer.

I loved how strong the holographic effect was; it’s not subtle–you don’t have to hold your nails at just the right angle under just the right light to see it. It dances in all lights and at all angles. The formula is perfection, as it is not too thick or too thin, flows fluidly across the nail and applies beautifully. Cosmic Fate was opaque in two coats. I normally get a week of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping with this formula.

Color Club Eternal Beauty Nail Lacquer

Color Club Eternal Beauty Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is cool-toned, violet purple with holographic shimmer. I don’t have anything like this that I can think of–not even this type of purple. Angel Kiss Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is a lightened, medium-blue with a hint of green and holographic shimmer. I wish I could tell you dupes, but I couldn’t think of anything for either of these two shades, both because of the holographic shimmer but also the color itself because of the high shimmer content, it gives it a very different finish than other potential dupes.

Both shades applied beautifully–absolutely no issues with application. In fact, Color Club’s holographic formula applies incredibly well in my experience. They’re not too thick or too thin in consistency, and they go on fluidly, evenly, and streak-free. The color payoff was fully opaque in two coats for both colors. I’ve been getting a week of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping with Color Club’s formula.

Color Club Blue Heaven Nail Lacquer

Color Club Blue Heaven Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is softened, lightly cool-toned baby blue with holographic shimmer. I could only think of one shade that was even remotely similar, which was Color Club Over the Moon, but it is a brighter, medium blue (it does have holographic shimmer, though). You can compare them both here.

I’ve been incredibly impressed with Color Club’s holographic formula, and Blue Heaven is good, though the others have spoiled me that this one wasn’t quite as fantastic. I noticed the consistency was just a bit thicker, so the coats didn’t apply as beautifully and as evenly as the others did. There were some faint brush strokes that were still noticeable and visible after the polish dried down. It was fully opaque in two coats, though, and the holographic shimmer dazzles and is obvious no matter the lighting conditions. I typically get a week of wear out of Color Club’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

Color Club Over the Moon Nail Lacquer

Color Club Over the Moon Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is brightened, medium blue with holographic shimmer. Milani Cyberspace was the closest shade I could think of, as it does have holographic shimmer and is blue, but it’s a darker, almost grayish blue in comparison–and has a larger sparkle/shimmer finish overall.

This is a fun polish to play with and do some hand dancing with, because it lightens and darkens as the light hits the nail, along with the holographic shimmer that gets more and less pronounced, depending on the angle and lighting. It has a strong holographic finish, though, that’s noticeable even in low light, so you don’t have to hold your nails at just the right angle under bright sunlight to appreciate it. The coverage was totally opaque in two coats, and the consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin. It was a breeze to apply–no pooling or bubbling, and the polish didn’t accentuate the natural texture of the nails like some holographic polishes can. I usually get a week of wear out of Color Club’s formula with minor tip wear but no chips.
