Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadows (Part 2)

Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadow ($17.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a cream-gel-mousse formula that’s designed to have a lightweight texture, yield “vivbrant, lively, buildable” color, be waterproof, and long-wearing. Just for fun, Bare Escentuals made a charitable contribution to Canine Companions for Independence when this product launched. They are also exclusive to Sephora. The next five shades I’m reviewing are: Golden Retriever (vibrant copper red), Husky (baby blue), Mutt (bronzed taupe), Poodle (pale yellow gold), and Pug (smoky pewter).

According to the brand, these are supposed to have sheer color coverage, but they are buildable to an extent. The five featured in this post are very true to that creed–they can easily be used as a sheer wash of color, but they can also be used opaque by either initially applying more color or by applying a second layer of color on top of the first. Stay-There Eyeshadows have a spongy quality that reminds me of memory foam; you can press it, and it will slowly spring back to form. You can jab at it with a pencil, and you’ll end up shifting it around more than anything! These actually launched well before Chanel Illusion d’Ombres, which have a similar texture.

I like using a really stiff, firm, and flat brush with these, but I’ve had the best luck applying these with fingertips. Once applied, they dry down to a powder finish in just the right time–not instantly but not so long that it’s creased before you’ve finished applying product to the other eye. I’ve tested several shades without primer as washes, including Black Lab, Bulldog, Chihuahua, Collie, Mutt, Pug, Saint Bernard, and Shih Tzu, and I haven’t had any issues with the shades creasing, fading, or smudging. I’ve even worn a few of them during showers to test waterproof claims, and they haven’t budged.

  • Golden Retriever is a warm, slightly red-tinted bronze brown. It can be applied sheer or as mostly opaque color coverage. Benefit Dandy Brandy is slightly darker. Maybelline Bad to the Bronze is darker and less red-toned. Urban Decay YDK is less brown.
  • Husky is a pastel baby blue with a silvery white shimmer. The color coverage can be built to opaque color coverage with ease. MAC Styledriven is slightly darker. Bare Escentuals Illusion is whiter, more aqua. Inglot #367 is similar but matte.
  • Mutt is a muted brown with a gilded bronze sheen. It doesn’t read taupe to me–it’s too warm and golden for that. Like the previous two shades, it can be built to opaque color coverage or applied as a sheer wash of color with less product. Urban Decay Suspect is a little more yellow-toned. MAC Magical Mist is a bit grayer. Urban Decay Juju is less red-toned. Urban Decay Spotlight is lighter.
  • Poodle is a pale yellow gold with a soft, metallic sheen. It, too, can be opaque or sheer, depending on application, but it doesn’t take much product to get opaque color. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful is a little lighter. theBalm Wild Child is very close. Givenchy Lune is also similar. MAC Nylon is slightly whiter.
  • Pug is a dirty gray-brown; it’s kind of taupe, but I feel like it’s too gray to be taupe. It’s such a cool shade, though, and it works well as a wash of color that’s more than just beige or brown. MAC Keep Your Cool is darker, less reflective. Urban Decay Mushroom is similar but a touch darker. Chanel Illusoire is darker, almost more purple-tinted.

I only have Poodle, and I can’t wear it on my lid with any kind of primer because it creases so fast. Poodle is soo pretty though. I still wear it but only as a brow highlight.

I think it creases depending on the color, oddly enough. I got the quad set that comes with Mutt, Whippet, Pekingese, and Terrier. Pekingese is a really pretty turquoise blue, though I’ve found that it creases more easily than the other three.

Mutt and Pug are calling my name (although my Golden Retriever, Daisy, was the dearest thing to my heart and was a much prettier colour than that shadow) but I have to ask myself (yet again) how many neutral cream eyeshadows do I really need?

I have Pug and love it! But the jar is sooo tiny, its a bit hard to get your brush in there. I wonder how it compares to Chanel’s Illusoire?

Pug is very similar to Giorgio Armani Pulp Fiction, though Pug is a cream and Pulp Fiction is a (very creamy) powder.

Just wanted those to be aware who already own PF, though maybe they’ll want a dupe of this beautiful color in a cream formula! =)

Does anyone else think Poodle looks similar to UD’s Maui Wowie?

I might have to compare the two in Sephora cause I’ve been lusting after Maui W. but the thought of all that glitter cleanup has stopped me so far from buying it. but I love these Buxom shadows.

Are these like the L’Oreal Infallible shadows at all? I’ll have to get some if so, I’ve been using the Infallible shadows non-stop lol : ) Pug looks gorgeous, I’m loving taupey browns right now.

That actually makes me happy. I want to try the Infallible and hoped they were different from the Buxoms. I purchased 8 or 9 buxoms at once expecting to really love them but returned every one of them. I just couldn’t get the texture to work for me. They would never apply evenly or opaque enough for my tastes. I was totally bummed.

I wear Mutt ALL THE TIME. I’ll make some sort of crazy color-combination with some shadows, then pat a little bit of Mutt over to tone it down a bit. It’s great!

I know these are relatively new, but do you know if they dry out in the pots? I’m a little alarmed by the shrinking away from the jar walls in a couple of the photos – I’ve seen cream shadows and liners do that at the end of their lifespan before.

I have had my poodle for over a year now. As long as the lid is tightly screwed on, drying out should not be a problem. I haven’t noticed any change in my poodle.

Nope, not dried out – the texture of them are the same across the board! I don’t know why, but the formula is very, very spongy, so it all moves as one piece.

I have poodle. I’ve had it for a while and I love the color and the texture πŸ™‚ Although I do have to admit – I only bought the color to begin with because I have a pet poodle πŸ˜›

these eyeshadows did not work for me at all… i found them hard to build up and they didnt last all day on me. it’s a shame because i heard they were good dupes to the armani ETK.

Is a part three coming up featuring the violet and lime green shadows? I’ve been antsy to see those swatched for days now!

I really like the formula on these. It’s like what the MAC Big Bounce formula should have been like.

Husky is my favorite!! I’ve had it for awhile now and just love it… Not just because I have a husky… Lol hehe but really the product is really nice πŸ™‚

Funny thing you didn’t mention GA Pulp Fiction as a possible dupe to Pug, even though Pug is a mousse and PF is powder-ish. On my skin they look nearly identical.

(Just read through the other comments, obviously I’m not the only one that thinks so.)

I felt Pulp Fiction was more nuanced – more purple-tinted – I swatched them side-by-side and didn’t think they were quite as close as other readers have – glad they’re the same on you!

I really love Pug, I have it, but sadly it creases on me like there’s no tomorrow. The only way I could make it work was over a powder eyeshadow base. The Chanel Illusion d’Ombre formulation works better, but still creases on me. I have to wear primer underneath it and still creases a bit at the end of the day. This is weird because I actually have very dry skin. I’ve come to think maybe the problems in my eyelids, since they are a little hooded. I don’t have this problem at all with paint pots like bare study. However, I still LOVE the texture and colors of Buxom Stay There Eyeshadows and Chanel Illusion d’Ombre and will continue to wear them! πŸ˜€
