  1. I prefer to buy online from companies such as Fyrinnae, Aromaleigh, Silk Naturals, etc. but I also tend to buy my MAC and Urban Decay online, too.

I find Sephora so overwhelming! I do love some of the brands they have there. I feel like when I go to a counter in a department store I get pretty good customer service. My MAC store is actually part of Macy’s, but it is seperate and off to the side — so it almost feels like a freestanding MAC. I always get great service there.

I chose Other, which would be at Walmart. Unless I save my money for quite some time or receive a gift card, I have no choice but to shop at Walmart for my makeup. However, I love the choices there so that is fine with me!

I like a certain department store best. I have a few s/p that I go to and we have fun chatting and trying the colors. They know there products, plus I get extra points for shopping there and boy the points add up!!! I have been to other retailers and my experience there has not been good( they don’t know the products or they are always out of stock).

I actually like to buy things online! It doesn’t matter where (as long as the website/seller is reliable). It’s the feeling of “receiving a gift” when the package does arrive that makes me really happy… HAHA. The key to this is that I ALWAYS look for reviews online or go to the actual stores to swatch/check out the products before I place an order. Hey that’s why I love temptalia :)

My favorite place to purchase mu is online. First MAC; then Nordies.

  8. Michelle

I pretty much ONLY buy my makeup at drugstores like Walgreens or CVS, discount stores like Walmart or Target, and Ebay. Very rarely will I go to Ulta or a department store. I much rather buy it online.

  9. Ashley

Do drug stores count as beauty retailers? Most of my cosmetics are purchased from local Canadian drug stores (London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart), and they both sell a select few high end brands. Although I haven’t purchased many things from those high end brands, as I dislike most of them and the selection isn’t very wide.

Otherwise, I enjoy purchasing makeup from Sephora, and I’ve purchased a dozen or so eyeshadows from a Micabella stand. Basically, I like to buy makeup from any physical location as long as the price is reasonable!

Nordstrom, Barneys, and Sephora. And online –

  12. Meika

For me it would be a combination of freestanding stores and beauty store.

Lately I have been doing most of my shopping online though.

  13. I like going to beauty retailers first, then freestanding stores, then department stores.

  14. Charlene

    Sephora, Mac, Ulta, & Walgreens

  15. Arianna

For me, it’s a tie between buying at beauty retailers(preferably Ulta b/c its closer to me 😀 ) and buying my cosmetics online from both the retailers and places like Urban Decay and MAC

  16. Lynniekae

I like Sephora bc of the F&F sale. I also get my MAC from either Nordstrom or MAC dot com.

I do like Cosmetic Company when I hit the outlets.

  17. esteta

I spend most of my makeup budget online, primarily at, but I do shop in Sephora or Ulta for certain things and when I need something now! Don’t get me wrong, I am not against buying from any of the others listed when I find something I just have to have though!

  18. Gao

I usually buy online but I like Beauty retailers or freestanding. :)

  19. amy

I try to spread myself out by going to department store counters and freestanding MAC stores and retailers such as Sephora. They all get my love equally. I do like to pick up mascara and nailpolish from drugstores though.

  20. shelpen

I still shy away from going to department stores to buy makeup, so I buy it online from those exact stores, as well as from beauty retailers (Sephora) and freestanding stores (MAC etc).
I always (!) check the return policy though. :)

  21. Ruth

I like to mix it up, part Sephora, part department store & part drugstore.

  22. We have no Sephora here. When I was in the UK i loved SPACENK =)

  23. I like freestanding stores for focused shopping of one brand but…

I really like browsing at Department stores here in Vancouver, Canada (The Bay & Holt Renfrew are AWESOME) because they carry so many brands and it’s cleaner than Sephora. Sephora is nice but it doesn’t have everything y’know (the higher end brands like Georgio Armani, Chanel, Bobbi Brown, etc), maybe I don’t appreciate it as much because we only got Sephora a year ago.

My only complaint about Department stores is that sometimes they put “Salespeople” instead of Makeup Artist at the counters which is just ridiculous.

  24. Christina

I like to shop all of these places online! Which also has to do with how I found your site awhile ago :) Im always looking for swatches since I cant see the products in person first!! so thank you :)

  25. karen

I like going to Ulta and Sephora, although at Sephora I feel they hover over you more. I also like Macy’s or Bloomies for MAC or Bobbi Brown. I’ve only been to a freestanding MAC store once.

  26. Jesenia

The Cosmetics Company Outlet and Sephora!

  27. Sunshine

    Usually online only :)

  28. I love getting a good deal and the best place for that is eBay. :) But I also like the stores with point schemes, so you can save your points up for something nice. In the UK they’re Boots and Debenhams. Unfortunately neither of them sell Mac, so for Mac I have to go to other department stores (Bentalls, House of Frasier, very occasionally Selfridges). What I hate about dept stores is all the keen sales assistants trying to stop you to “just ask a question”. Grr!

  29. Nicole

Where is the drugstore category? :( It would be interesting to see how many votes for drugstores. Oh wells, I voted “other.”

  30. Bec

Related to this post: PLEASE be VERY CAREFUL with any cosmetics, skincare etc that you buy on EBAY. A LOT OF IT IS FAKE.
Especially the MAC. Some of it is ok and 100% authentic but there is a massive amount of fake MAC, they will use real MAC names etc but it is a bunch of fake junk. If you do purchase make sure it is from a good seller with 100% positive feedback and known as a certified authentic seller. =)

  31. Independent beauty e-tailers. :)

  32. Sara at MAC Pro in SF. She’s pretty much the cat’s pajamas :)

I can’t believe I missed this one earlier this week! I love these little short-answer things 😛 Hehe.

  33. Katrina

I buy the majority of my makeup online! I get mascara and makeup remover at the local drugstore, but otherwise I buy almost all of it online at MAC! I am planning my first sephora order soon though!! :)

  34. Nicole

I live in the Bay in Canada when it comes to purchasing makeup!
although if I were in Toronto, Id frequent Sephora, Im sure!
