Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Apocalypse and Lovechild
This spring, Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) adds two new shades to the permanent range: Apocalypse (deep berry) and Lovechild (pale pink hue). I reviewed this formula here when it first debuted last year. The formula is supposed to be long-wearing, provide opaque color, have a glossy shine, be moisturizing, and not feather.
- Apocalypse is a deep, purple berry with a glossy shine and mostly opaque color. The color doesn’t apply evenly, so it can look a little patchy if you’re not careful and does settle into lip lines a bit. MAC Riveting Rose is similar but a touch redder. MAC Night Violet seems really close, too, but with less of a shine.
- Lovechild is a light-medium pink with a subtle blue-base. It has opaque color coverage and applies evenly. MAC Dress It Up is a touch lighter and bluer-based. MAC Royal Azalea is much lighter. OCC Femme is several shades lighter. MAC Behave Yourself is slightly cooler-toned and doesn’t apply as evenly.
As you might expect, sharpening these can be an exercise in frustration, as you will waste product while sharpening and the creamy consistency means the product gets stuck in the sharpener and smears easily (so it doesn’t just cleanly lift from the sharpener). This is the major downside to this formula (and it is a common problem with creamy pencil products). Apocalypse wore for five hours with a subtle residual stain, while Lovechild wore for three hours. I do find the formula to be moisturizing, opaque, and not have any bleeding/feathering issues. Both of these have a healthy shine, though Lovechild has the highest shine–more like a gloss.

It's long-wearing, moisturizing, and four of the five deliver mostly opaque color coverage. Depending on how often you expect to use the lip pencil, the amount you lose from sharpening may be concerning.See more photos & swatches!

Love Apocalypse! But I don’t think i could pull it off. May need a class on Smiling Brilliantly XD am so jealous everytime you review lip products, in a good admiring way though. I’ve had luck with my UD pencils so far, I can use the waste because it doesn’t stick to my sharpener. And I love pencil format products, everytime I sharpen them the new layers are clean, I don’t know I just like them. Light to store as well.

I get pretty frustrated trying to sharpen Urban Decay eyeliners as well. Especially when I lived in Indonesia! You have no idea how much the heat and humidity changes the texture of your cosmetics…
One trick I was taught is to freeze the pencils for about half an hour before sharpening. It’s kind of a hassle but it works. ^^;
I can see it helping with pencils, though these are even creamier – so I wonder how practical it would be to freeze and unfreeze, lol!
I have all 5 of the original pencils, and when I get close to where they’re needing to be sharpened, I throw them in the fridge for a while.. it helps a TON
I have one of these in one of the original colors, and the last time I needed to sharpen it I popped it into the fridge (not freezer!) for about half an hour. When I sharpened it with one of UD’s sharpener, I lost only a tiny bit of product and got a great point!

I think I would wast more product “sharpening” the pencil. I kind of have an OCD thing where I like to have a clean point, which probably won’t happen with this creamy formula. I guess if you REALLY need any of these you could always try to de-”stick” them into a pot?? I don’t know if it would be worth it to pay $19 for these. Automatic pencil would’ve been the way to go I think…I like the color of Lovechild though.

I’m really loving Apocalypse on you, even though you said the consistency is spotty.
Because sharpening is such a pain, do you believe depotting them into a container via the same process of NYX jumbo pencils would work with the formula?
I’m sure you could finagle it, though this is a creamier formula, so I’m not sure if it would work as well or better (have never done either)!
Both look super lovely on you! I don’t own anything of this type, but I can see how much trouble sharpening them could be! I do have the UD Grindhouse though. Will it do the job?

So, I know this is a slightly random place to ask my question, but I am thinking of either buying the BOS4 (bc its back to $29) or 2 sets of the shadow pencil stash. which would you suggest? would it be better to buy the pencils or BOS?
