Urban Decay Summer of Love Eyeshadow Palette

Travel with Urban Decay This Summer

Urban Decay Summer of Love Shadow Palette ($29.00) is a new-for-summer eyeshadow palette that features four eyeshadows (0.04 oz. each), a miniature Sin Primer Potion (0.09 fl. oz.), and miniature Bourbon 24/7 Eye Pencil (0.03 oz.). The eyeshadows included in the palette are Flash (bright iridescent purple), Maui Wowie (medium gold with silver glitter), Chopper (coppery fawn with silver microglitter), and Smog (deep coppery bronze).

Everything in the palette is available individually, should you only fall in love with one of the shades! As such, everything included is also permanent. However, for those who do not already have the majority of these eyeshadows either individually or in various past-released palettes, you get a good amount of product in the palette itself.

Normal eyeshadows are 0.05 oz. (and retail for $17) while the palette versions are 0.03 oz. — still plenty to use. The eyeliner is typically 0.04 oz. (and retails for $17) but 0.03 oz. in the palette. Plus, you do get the mini-sized Sin Primer Potion (my least favorite of the primers, though–so metallic!). All in all, the palette is a good deal with lots of value–if you don’t already own the shades in it.

  • Flash is a cool-toned violet purple with a slight iridescence. It’s very smooth, pigmented, and vibrant.
  • Maui Wowie is an antique gold with silver glitter. It has great color pay off, and I swear this version felt so much smoother than the one included in the Alice in Wonderland palette, which felt much grittier. You may encounter some fall out with this shade from the glitter.
  • Chopper is a muted copper with a gilded-bronze sheen/shimmer. It has nice pigmentation and applies smoothly.
  • Smog is a deepened chocolate brown with a warm bronze sheen. It, too, is a vibrant shade that has rich pigmentation.

Urban Decay seems to really love releasing summer palettes with a series of browns and then a pop of color. (Remember Get Baked from last year?) I do like this color variation a lot better than last year’s, because I feel like there is a good amount of differentiation between each shade.

The packaging fits with their theme–definitely groovy and all that–but I’m not digging the vintage photographs on the back. I would have personally loved to have seen the floral pattern continue around the mirror, like it did in Get Baked. It’s cool that the graphic designer’s parents are now immortalized in a makeup palette, but for me, it’s just, “Who are these random people?” Like the majority of Urban Decay products, it is made out of sturdy cardboard. I like these flip-open palettes, because they’re slim, streamlined, and easy to travel with and store.

It’s a nice option for a summer palette, but as always, I wish Urban Decay would release new shades of eyeshadows rather than using their permanent shadows. It makes it hard to purchase as a fan, just because you probably own all of them with the palettes you already have! Maybe Urban Decay should make palette forms available of all their eyehadows so we can just mix and match throughout the year! :)

P.S. – I think I have enough mini-sized Bourbon liners to get me through year 3000.

If you want to know more about how products are evaluated, read out Rating System FAQ! :)

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

Recommendation: If you don’t own a lot of Urban Decay eyeshadows, this palette makes a fun option for some summery shades. It’s a great value if you don’t have any of the shades, and the quality of the products within the palette are tops.  It’s easily skipped if you own half or more of the shades/products in it.

  1. I am a HUGE Urban Decay fan because I think their products are similar in quality to MAC but a lot more towards the affordable end.

I am DYING to try that palette!! I already have the 24/7 liner and it’s the one I end up wearing everyday because it stays on, looks great and I always get compliments.

  2. Jackie

do you know when it will be sold in SEPHORA?

  3. Ellie

I already have those colors in other palettes, but for anyone new to UD, I highly suggest this. Such pretty colors!!

  4. Chopper, smog, and Maui wowie are my most used and loved from the ammo pallet, so if you don’t have these colors, this looks like something worth checking out!

  5. ModeCrazyMakeUpOn

Way too much repromoting as always -_-“

    • Raych

Yeah.. but Urban Decay’s Summer launches have never been about NEW shades.. although I appreciate their branching out to complexion products!

I heard their FALL/HOLIDAY is packed with New eyeshadows though..

  6. Hilana

Totally LOVE it. Especially Flash and Chopper. Awesome palette. Thanks for the swatches, Christine! :)

  7. Leah

I feel that way about UD Zero liners. I swear I have enough for the rest of my life!

  8. I’ve just used Chopper (or otherwise known as Chessur) in a look today (with Sin and X (Drink me, eat me and Muchness from AIW)! Oh and UDPP in Sin as base (I love it!). I have the other 3 colours too, so won’t be buying this palette, but I’m almost sad I won’t because I really like it, lol. I skipped last year’s Get Baked palette too because I had all of those shades too. I think I have now got to the point when I own almost all the shades I ever will. :)

  9. Sparkleandsmile16

I love the size of the palette since it is so easy to just throw in your bag for touch ups during the day. I agree about the packaging with the peoples’ faces, not my cup of tea. The outside is cute though! I would pick this up except I already have 2 of the colors from other palettes so it doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Thanks for the review! I always love reading what you think of it, Christine!

  10. I don’t have any of these shades so I will probably pick this up, even though I’m not real sure of the purple for me–will probably use as a liner only. Bourbon is one of my favs but like you, Christine, I have plenty! Wish UD would change up the shade they offer in these palettes. I’d better hide this though, b/c I see my teenager stealing it!

  11. I totally agree with you, as an Urban Decay fan, I haven’t bought a palette in ages, because I already own most of the colours from their older palettes or from the individual shadows! And yet another bourbon eye pencil… Yawn! I have three!
Still, this is a good colour combination, Maui Wowie is one of my favourites and it’s good to see it getting some attention.
But, I do already own all of these colours and the pencil, so I won’t be buying this one.

  12. Aubree

-.- If you have the Alice in Wonderland already own 3/4 of the colours.

  13. Kerry

i love the packaging of this but i already have all 4 colours haha

  14. I like the compact packaging, but UD repeats colors. I would love if they make some new LE colors and nest them in such lovely packagings…I mean hw many smogs can one have???

  15. Flash is gorgeous but I have all the others so I might just buy Flash 😛 Oh wait, it’s in UD’s Show Pony Palette I have LOL I’m good

  16. Diana

=( At first this palette seemed awesome but then I realized i have 3/4 shades and that eyeliner. I, too was wondering who those people are on the palette!

  17. Jess0501

i think urban decay is one of the brand that made fine eyeshadows ( i really love UD’s eyeshadows), but why do they have to put all the same colors over and over again in a palette?? i am so disappointed with the lack of creativity from them.
oh well, thanks christine for the post. i really enjoy temptalia.. ^^

  18. Michelle

I got the Alice in Wonderland palette — so I won’t be picking this one up. I love the colors and how smooth they go on — but I end up with ridiculous fallout — even when using an eye primer/base. Anyone have any ideas of how to prevent this?

  19. Maui wowie and flash are my fav shadows! Beautiful palette that I would recommend too!

  20. kirayna

I might buy this to depot into my Unii palette to carry around as I’m not that fussed on the packaging but I can’t seem to find Smog individually in the UK and it’s one of my favourites. I wish UD would sell refills in pans, especially of their deluxe eyeshadows, so much the better if they could be square shaped :)

    • aradhana

hi i’m in the uk, and though i can’t confirm whether smog is available in a pan here, i definitely have purchased it in the loose pigment format at boots….
      hope that’s some help!

  21. Michelle

This palette has some beautiful colors and I love that they included a bright purple instead of the teal that is so often in summer palettes. I like the cute packaging of these summer palettes, they are great to throw in a bag when going away for a weekend or to the beach. I also think the color payoff of Urban Decay shadows is always great… but I would have preffered to see some new shades in this palette, I already have all of these in previous palettes and I just can’t justify purchasing this to have a smaller more toteable palette. Great review as always Christine!!!

  22. Kathy

Since I don’t own any of these eyeshadow colors already, I’m definitely picking this up!

Also, I can never have enough Bourbon 24/7 liners. It’s probably my favorite eyeliner of all time.

  23. Proximity

I don’t know if you saw this … but since I’ve asked about the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil Eldorado a couple times, and I think you were also sad that it wasn’t available in full size …
Well, if you check out the Urban Decay website, you’ll see that now they have it! I was so excited, because it’s a great shade (good for summer, too).

  24. DevilishDoll

I wish they would do a palette with Flash, Painkiller, Ecstacy and Minx, and maybe Deviant 24/7 Eyeliner. That would take care of most of my Urban Decay wants.

  25. Kristen

Why does Urban Decay insist on putting out a new “collection” with all old colors. They do that all the time…make a palette with 14 old shades and 1 new one that of course you can get anywhere else lol

  26. Caramel

I love this palette. Smog is my go-to eyeshadow for an everyday, easy smokey eye. The rest are beautiful too.

  27. Meika

These colors look good together but I feel like I have so many dupes I can create this with what I already have.

  28. Ughh.. the palette LOOKS awesome but all these shadows and liner have been put in previous sets. My Alice palette has all the shadows except for Smog and I know I have Bourbon liner somewhere from another set (the Baked palette I believe??) I wish Urban Decay would start putting out cooler palettes with new colors. As a customer, there’s no point in buying something new when we already have all these shades.

  29. AnGeLwInGz

I’m not liking the dark purple/ brown mix. I imagine it would be very muddy-looking together.

  30. Adriana

Urban Decay comes out with so many palettes, I feel like I own all their eyeshadow colours already. Buying this would be kind of a waste.

  31. Michelle M

Sigh. I love UD, but I get tired of seeing the same old shades again and again. I find it hard to get excited about the palettes when I own most of the shades already. Or at leas the ones that I want to own. I would love to see some NEW EYESHADOWS!! Please??

  32. Alexis

I don’t know much about UD – I bought the “Get Baked” palette from the website a few weeks ago at 40% off. My question is – how similar would you say the browns are in both palettes? I’m sure my question will make some laugh, but I am only starting to become familiar with Urban Decay. Thanks in advance for your help!

  33. I do wish they would just come out with new shades already, (although a backup Bourbon liner would be awesome) but I already will never finish a whole shadow and definitely don’t need 4 more repeats :( That was the reason I didn’t buy the Alice BOS, Yep it was beautiful, but soooo not worth the money for shade’s I’ll never touch (but totally could have made a killing on ebay I guess…dammit..)
Thank you for the swatches though! 😀

  34. Kit

I only have two eyeshadows and one eyeliner from UD, so I will probably be getting this. =] the closest place to get UD in person is like an hour and a half away! D:

  35. I’m not a huge fan of the glitter, so I’ll be skipping this.

P.S. – I think I have enough mini-sized Bourbon liners to get me through year 3000.

I have to admit, I lol’d at this. XD

  36. Rosie

I love the colors. I wish they’re release colors they haven’t put in palettes because I keep having all the colors already.

  37. Lynniekae

I love Urban Decay, but hate the primer. I also think I have Flash, so that’s two strikes against this palette. Also, I’m trying to stop buying colors in the brown too many. Three strikes, this palette’s out!

  38. Davina

Love the colors. Hate the packaging so I’ll pass

  39. jaspreet

i haven’t use urban decay products but i heard it many times that there primers works awesome on skin but i am India we don’t have this bread

  40. Xandra

I love the packaging of this palette and strangely enough, I’ve managed to avoid owning a Bourbon liner up to now. But while I like the Maui Wowie and Flash colors a lot, I’m not quite sure how one works a purple shade into a brown/copper combination. If you have any idea, I’d appreciate it if you could show it in an EOTD one day

  41. when does this going to be in sephora/ulta? i need this!

  42. Rowan

can you do a look with these colors? I know it may seem kind of self explanatory but I’d love to see how they look together.
Question: are these going to be sold at Sephora? If so do you know when they come in?

  43. Gabrielle

Never tried Urban Decay before and the three neutral colors look very interesting to me. I might try this although I’m not sure how to wear the purple shade.

  44. I too LOVE Urban Decay and was so eager to try this palette but I have had some problems…Maui Wowie and Chopper are the main reasons why I bought this particular product but I found that hours after application the glitter in both these shadows fell from my lid and found their way into my eyes! I’ve tried the shadows in various different ways (don’t ask me why) but some how that glitter always gets in my eye and feels something like a shard of glass! I’m not hating on UD by any means I love this company and it’s products-but please PLEASE I wish there was something to be done about the falling glitter! I sadly will probably sell mine because I honestly can’t wear it any more!

  45. Rachael

This palette is not on sale for $15 on the urban decay website.

  46. Marina upset I didn’t buy this last summer. :( If I did, I would have done ‘Maui Wowie’ as a highlight, ‘Chopper’ all over the lid, ‘Smog’ in the crease, ‘Flash’ on the lower lash line (Optional), and Bourbon on the upper lash line!

Wet ‘n’ Wild’s Dancing In The Clouds from their Dream Weavers collection is a dupe for Flash, Maui Wowie and Chopper!

    • It’s unfortunate that most of us cannot buy any of those palettes :( I checked 5 local drugstores myself, and I had a friend check 5 herself – so I gave up. No reason to work that hard for products that most won’t be able to find either :(

  48. juliaaxoxo

Do you happen to know any MAC dupes for “Flash”? :)
