Video Review:  Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow, Eyeshadow, & Lipstick

This is a video review of a few of Urban Decay’s permanent products — their regular, circular eyeshadows, deluxe eyeshadows, and a few lipsticks.  I’ve reviewed these products before on the blog (though not these shades!), and I will be doing full write-ups of these products individually over the next couple of months, but if you can’t wait, this video should help you!  I hope you enjoy!

    Christine you are the best!
just wanted to thank you… you’re giving up such a big part of your time in order to please your readers – thats amazing! :)
I (and I guess everyone here) cant thank you enough!

I have all deluxe es you reviewed in my Deluxe palette along with 6 other shades. They are all great.

Midnight Cowboy Rides Again is my fave Urban Decay shade and probs my fave eyeshadow ever.

    • Wow! Wouldn’t have thought that at all. LOL! Definitely different strokes for different folks 😀 It’s my least favorite eyeshadow – possibly of all time, lol. But I am thrilled you love it! How do you recommend combating the fallout?

I wouldn’t be able to pick a favorite color of eyeshadow, but all the matte shades are nice (Illegal happens to be a great one for me, but I imagine it wouldn’t look good on everyone – it’s sort of a dusty rose color). My all time favorite lipstick is Urban Decay Naked (which came out this past spring). It’s beautiful on my lips – just amazing. My boyfriend also doesn’t mind Urban Decay lipstick because it’s not sticky – he HATES when I wear MAC lipgloss and I get no kisses from him, hehe. The application is so smooth. Thanks for posting this review – it’s great!

The only thing that you could have said in the review is that if that dagger breaks off the end of the lipstick, you’re screwed unless you have some superglue or something. Also, they do offer a really nice special cap for the lipsticks which I happen to think is really pretty. I had to buy it for my tube of Naked :-)

    • I’ve never had a dagger break so it did not occur to me to say anything about it, but good point! Have you had some break then?

      • Kat

Yes unfortunately! I dropped Naked on the ground and the dagger broke off when I was in Paris this past May. I didn’t have anything on me that could fix it, but that just meant I had to go shopping to find another lipstick for the rest of my vacation :-) Not the worst thing that could happen, and I glued an eraser on it when I got back from vacation to get it out of the cover.

I love their 1999 liner. It’d be interesting to see and eyeshadow in the same color.

i wish they would put mary jane in one of their palettes – its really nice. I love UD eyeshadows, especially toasted from the naked palette and mushroom from BOS III, Roach for a smoky eye (i’m going to try pair it with toasted) and flipside as well. I don’t have any of the deluxe ones.

    • I agree! Have all their BOS and lots of other palettes, yet I don’t own any of the shades you reviewed (the normal ones, not the Deluxe ones). I need Mary Jane in my life! That’s definitely gonna be my next UD purchase.

Unfortunately I really dislike the burnt caramel smell, but I will try to leave my Naked lipstick open for a day or two and see if that helps. Thanks Christine, great review! :)

I keep wanting to try UD lipstick in Lovechild since I love pinks but I have Naked and, although I use it often, I find the lid tends to come off so I don’t know if that’s a typical problem?

Thanks for doing this review. I just ordered my first UD lipstick and can’t wait to try it!

Question–do you find that the lipsticks bleed much?

  9. Naked is my favorite UD lipstick. I keep hearing about bad fallout for the eyeshadows so that has kept me from trying them out, but I think I will definitely take a look next time I’m at Sephora. Thanks for the review!

    hey missy,

totally random, but do you think you’ll be getting the new nikon d7000 announced tonight http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/15/nikon-d7000-brings-39-point-af-1080p-video-and-magnesium-alloy/

  11. Naked lipstick is one of my all time favorites! Is scratch eyeshadow comparable to mac expensive pink at all? Would it make a nice lid color for green eyes?

  12. Steph

thanks for another great video! Is the smell similar to the pocket rockets as i had a sample of one and couldn’t stand it unfortunately

    thanks x

Indecent lipstick has a really off chemical taste to it that I have not found in the other shades I had tried just aa an FYI if any one is looking. I have not tested that shade since they came out but I’m hoping that has been fixed. The rest seem fine to me the sweetness doesn’t bother me.

Half Baked (own the token and Naked palette) Sin (in AinW and Naked) and Roach are just the nicest shadows for day wear from UD the warm of the brow should be flattering on most skin types as well. I also use Roach as a liner from time to time.

My least favorite is Goddess, I looks lovely but always turns grey and splotchy when I apply it instead of the twilight navy i wanted it to be. Midnight Cowboy Rides Again needs to be foiled with glycerin or another medium to get it to work, it’s not a shade to wear daily (I mean it’s just to much glitter for me) but you can get it to work well with a medium and primer.

I absolute favorite is still Virgin out of the Naked palette, I wish they make it a permanent shadow. It really is perfect for my fair skin as a nude lid or highlighter and the texture is divine.

The reason I won’t buy more UD lipsticsk is because some taste like nothing, and some are terrible. I have and love Naked, which doesn’t taste like anything, but bought 5150 and gaged at the taste and had to wash my mouth and brush my teeth.

Thanks for featuring these shadows, Christine. I can’t say that there aren’t any shadow colors I don’t like. My favorite, though, is Freakshow. It’s great on the entire lid as it is for making a smokey eye. I’ve even used it for lining my eyes. For out at night, I’ve mixed it with a bit of mineralized blush – just a tad though – to contour my cheekbones. I find it to be very versitile; perhaps it’s the smoothness that I enjoy so much.

Great video- I had been wondering about the differences between the deluxe and regular shadows. One thing though… they DID have lipsticks before these! They were discontinued a few years before these came out, however. I still have a tube of the original Gash in the old packaging that was metal and looked like a shotgun shell, which I like much better than the new plastic-with-dagger packaging. I have matching Gash nail polish too, but it’s all dried up now. :-(
