The Scarlet Season: E.L.F. Royal Red Lipstick

E.L.F. Royal Red Lipstick ($5.00) is a deep red with a plum twist. It’s just red enough to be part of the series, yet it’s definitely not the true red we often think of when we think red lips. Not everyone loves or wants to wear true red lips all the time, so reds that deviate in various ways are always fun options to consider. The lipstick itself is scent- and taste-less, so if your nose is sensitive to scents, you may prefer these scent-less shades. E.L.F.’s Lipstick lasts about average on me (three to four hours), and it does leave a bit of a waxy feel behind once the color has faded away. This is a budget-friendly lipstick option that goes on sheer and builds into an opaque shade after a few layers. It’s hard to go wrong for $5!

The Scarlet Season is a series of posts showcasing and featuring my favorite shades of red lips–from glosses to lipsticks that runs through December 2009. You can sure expect to see a lot of red this holiday season!

Surprisingly pretty for E.L.F.! I’m confused though, I thought all their makeup was $1.00 – guess they have branched out a bit?

I know it’s part of their mineral line or studio line, which I think is a “higher” level.

    woow!! soo coool!!!
    i’d love to try it
    any dupe from mac??

    • Christine

      Monday, November 2, 2009

I can’t think of a great permanent dupe for this. This has a little bit more of that orange/copper tone to it than anything that comes to mind (New York Apple has more of a ruby look, Dubonnet doesn’t have the same texture, etc.).

        ohh so sad :(
        I can’t find E.L.F. in my country
        but… i’ll check other brands

Gorgeous! But it reminds me of a MAC lipstick I used to wear…but I can’t remember the name! Gah, I hate it when that happens.

    • Christine

      Monday, November 2, 2009

Let me know if you remember! Was it LE?

      • Christy

        Monday, November 2, 2009

Hehhe, how could I forget? “O”! I used to wear it everyday. I think a light application of “O” would be pretty close. It’s a purpl-ish red with gold. Love it, love it, love it. :)

          Monday, November 2, 2009

Oh, good call ;) I was thinking Odyssey, but I was like, “that’s not right,” but O, that makes sense!

          • Christy

            Monday, November 2, 2009

Yeah, Odyssey is quite a bit different. More purple than it is red. Still a pretty color though :)

I’m so mad at you! Where was this swatch when I placed my order a few weeks ago? Lol

I love this color! I’m such a red girl, but I ordered “Barely Bitten” mineral lipstick instead. It’s pretty, but a little too peachy for my taste.

And for anyone who cares, Target is going to be carrying ELF soon.

    • Christine

      Monday, November 2, 2009

Barely Bitten is peachy? I wouldn’t have thought, by that name, it would be peach. I envisioned something tinted red, haha.

      • Crissy

        Monday, November 2, 2009

Me too! It is reddish, but not like when you bite your lips. There’s some warm bronzey undertone to it. Almost a rusted peach? Kind of hard to describe!

          LOL! Too bad :(

I really like the gold shimmer in this. it adds a little luxury/glamor when the formula alone can’t make it a standout because it’s a budget line.
