How do you choose what lip color to wear? Do you pair certain colors with certain other colors? How do you know what lipstick and gloss to combine? What advice do you have for the lip-pairing-troubled?

My favorite makeup item is lipcolor. Sometimes, it’s the first thing I choose, even before eye makeup. It depends on what I’m wearing, if it’s more casual, colorful or formal. But I usually use nude peach or neutral pinks. Sometimes, I end up mixing colors randomly. It’s half the fun!

For the lip-pairing-troubled, it’s all about balance. Focus on accentuating one part of the face and it will be easier later. If you want a brighter eye, go for a lighter lip. But for a striking bold lip, don’t go overboard with eyeshadow.

Sorry, I don’t think I really answered your question.

I love that you choose it first sometimes!

Since I have quite a lip collection, sometimes it is not easy to choose…
I have a few tried and tested favourites, that I come back to all the time, but I also love to experiment. Generally I prefer light, shimmery colors, I cannot wear a bold lip.
I probably choose according to my mood, clothes don´t figure much, since I tend to wear black most of the time, anyway.
Since I saw your lip combo posts, I have experimented more with color combinations I didn´t think of before, and started to write down particularly great lipstick-gloss combinations for the future.

I usually do the nudie looks, because I have so many nude l/s & l/g (2n to mad cap you know around there) …so it’s kind of easy to stay in “safe mode”.

First time I mixed a random lipstick and l/g was a couple of days ago. I used “honey flower”(I applied it so lightly) and “nymphette”(a couple of applications to the lips)…I know it might sound weird to do those too, but I’m experimenting. My lips was so sparklie and cute…it gave it a decent effect..maybe since both was a sparklie lip product…but my lips was like some what a light coral…almost like “missy” (going from swatches), but w/ a touch of sparkles.

I decided that day I will play around more often.

Since I usually do the eyes first, my lipstick choice will depends on the end result of my eyes after they’re all made up.

I tend to reach for the same lipstick/gloss combo for about a week then I get bored and will switch to something else for a week…etc etc. I love to wear whatever grabs my mood that day.I dig pink so thats usually what I am wearing.

I don’t have that many lipcolors so it’s fairly easy. I take cues from my clothes. If I’m wearing pinks/ purples or reds, I’ll use my vino lipliner and it pupleizes whatever else I’m wearing. If I wanna go brown, I’ll wear chestnut lipliner to brown and warm up my lips. If I wanna go really neutral, I’ll put Hover lipliner all over my lips and top that with Goldensoft lipgelee go give me a “my lip but better” look. I know what colors to combine through trial and error.

This is definitely a question I want to see answers for! Thanks!

My problem is that I don’t want my lips to not “flow” well with my overall makeup. IE if I choose a neutral eyeshadow pairing (maybe a bit on the dark side) should I be staying closer to neutral lips or could I go plummy or would I look…ummmm…stand-on-the-corner-ish?

I’ve heard ppl say bright busy eyeshadow colouring means go for the opposite for the lips so a more nudie tone rather than BRIGHT eyes and BRIGHT lips.

But honestly I’m so confused and what looks good to me may look funny out in public. So I stick to neutral lipsticks (Flattering mattene, Poise mattene, 3N, 2N) but I do like Twig-Twig and just have to figure out a good eye pairing!

      Hey Lori!

I hope you find the post helpful :D

I tend to do neutral eyes, bolder lips; bold eyes, neutral lips.

I’ll use viva glam 5 or 6 type shades for cooler or more dramatic eyeshadow, and for my greens/golds/browns I’ll use more tan or coral-y shades. Pretty simple, and within that I play around a lot.

That’s a good method, Erin :) Love corals with golds!

Also, for anyone worried about choosing a color that’s too flashy with dramatic eyes… it is a good rule to either play up lips or eyes and maybe not both, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting! There is definitely a happy medium.

I totally agree with this, Erin!

I don’t feel comfortable with very bold lips, and I don’t look good in nudes, so I have a lot of pinky shades. I choose a cold or warm pink to match my eye make up, and if I feel like showing off my lips I put gloss on them rather than lipstick :) (can’t get used to mixing for some reason)

I am sure you look good in both bolds and nudes, but I know how you feel about not always being comfortable in bolds!

pretty easy for me.. either lip balm for soft lip, flavour lip gloss if i want some sweet taste (peach especially) or dark lip gloss for night occasion.

That does sound like a very easy routine, Ping :)

I stick to either cool or warm colors when it comes to make up in general. I never wear a mix – if it’s cool shades on the eyes, it will definitely be a cool shade of lipstick and blush.

Since I am NC35, when it comes to lipstick, I stick to warm colors and that means a lot of brick reds, mahogany browns and a couple of shades of beige. I also love wine, plum and dark pink shades.

If I wear a matte lipstick, sometimes I add a layer of gloss that is one shade lighter or darker, depending on what kind of look I want. Wearing a completely different shade of gloss over lipstick can look pretty nice for a while (think ten minutes) but it will end up looking pretty bizarre, so I find it’s best to stick to the same color groups when selecting a lip gloss to apply over lipstick.

When applying gloss over lipstick, it’s important to blend with a brush – using the gloss applicator will not distribute the gloss evenly at times.

Here are some of my favorite lip combos:

Russian Red lipstick with RR lip gloss
    Lovechild/Revealing over Spice lip pencil
Touch with Stila Cinnamon lip glaze
    Craving with Flashmode
    Clarins 330 under Clarins 350
    Siren applied over Diva
Clarins 350 with Stila Star Fruit lip glaze

If you are going for a more natural look, try a lipcolor that is a shade or 2 darker than the color of your gums. This tones flatters the smile making the teeth appear whiter. Wearing lipgloss with lipstick can be tricky but try wearing a lipstick formulation that is more moist, creamy, or moisturizing with a lipgloss. The textures of a lipgloss and lipstick that are both moist and shiny tend to blend and wear better than a matte lipstick with a gloss.

I usually wear just clear gloss or really light pink because I like playing up my eyes more :)
