5 Perfectly Cool-Toned Pink Eyeshadows

Cool-toned pinks tend to be blue-based, and when they’re on the lighter end of the spectrum, you’ll find they’re described as cotton candy or bubblegum pink, while when they’re on the darker end of the spectrum, they are often fuchsia or magenta.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Swatches (Part 1)

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m going through a lot of permanent eyeshadows from various brands so that we can add more swatches to the Swatch Gallery.  Here are eleven Urban Decay eyeshadows (with no real rhyme or reason), and going through all of the pots yesterday made me wish Urban Decay would sell their permanent range in refills.  It would be so much more convenient and take up less space!

• Dashiki is a medium, brightened blue with a frosted sheen. It seems like it would be comparable to MAC’s Freshwater.
• Free Love is a medium-dark coral-orange with a golden shimmer and sheen.
• Haight is a medium-dark blue with a hint of teal and blue shimmer.
• Lounge is a reddened brown with a teal shimmer and flash. It’s more of a duochrome. At first glance, it seems similar to MAC’s Club, and it is, but it has a lot more red in its base (also more pigmented).
• Mary Jane is a steely gray-blue with a silver sheen.
• Psychedelic Sister is a dark violet purple with subtle red undertones and a shimmered sheen.
• Rush is a darkened gold-bronze with antique gold shimmer and a frosted sheen. It’s similar to Illamasqua Ore but less multi-faceted.
• S&M is a medium-dark silver shimmered gray with a frosted finish.
• Shakedown is a muted, played-down mushroom brown with a matte finish. It’s a browner version of Burberry Taupe Brown; matte version of Inglot #402.
• Urb is an olive green with a golden sheen and antique gold micro-glitter. This a less-than-stellar shade because of the glittery finish; it doesn’t apply evenly and can have a lot of fall out during application.
• Woodstock is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with soft pink shimmer and a pearled sheen.

Urban Decay Eyeshadows are some of my favorites–they are typically very pigmented, smooth, buttery, and blendable.  The only shades to watch for are any that have the word “glitter” or “sparkle” in the description, because they tend to have a micro-glitter that just doesn’t bind with the color base, which means it either disappears between brush and lid (best case scenario) or you end up with a sparkly under eye (worst case scenario).  (Urb is the shade that brings down the overall rating on these.)  Their matte finishes are soft and finely milled, but a note on application, these are so blendable that it’s easy to overdo it.

The Glossover

	Urban Decay Eyeshadow Swatches (Part 1) A
	With the exception of Urb, these are all really easy to use, blendable, and nicely pigmented eyeshadows. Urb lacks color payoff, has a grittier texture, and suffers from fall out.

LOVE! this palette.  The three neutrals look amazing together, but due to popular request, I had to incorporate Woodstock somehow!

You will need the following…

• Eyes:  Urban Decay Greed Primer Potion (gold base), Urban Decay Woodstock Eyeshadow (fuchsia), Urban Decay Verve Eyeshadow (muted taupe brown), Urban Decay Suspect Eyeshadow (muted champagne bronze), Urban Decay Darkhorse Eyeshadow (dark bronze), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow (highlighter), Urban Decay Whiskey 24/7 Liner (warm dark brown), Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara (black)
• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140)
• Cheeks: MAC Giggly Mineralize Blush (pinky plum)
• Lips: Guerlain Cherry Blossom Rouge Automatique (deep rose)
• Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 222 (fluffy crease brush), 263 (angled eyeliner brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: Verve = MAC Retrospeck (for this look), Suspect = theBalm All About Alex; Darkhorse = MAC Bronze; Giggly = MAC Plum Foolery

For eyes, start by applying Greed as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249.  Apply Verve eyeshadow to the inner third of the eye with the 239.  Next, apply Suspect eyeshadow to the middle third of the eye, going above the crease.  Apply Darkhorse eyeshadow just above the crease and into the outer corner with the 222.  With the edge of the 239, apply Woodstock eyeshadow to the outer two-thirds of the crease.  Use Trench eyeshadow to highlight the brow bone and diffuse the crease color with the 217.  Apply Whiskey liner on the lower lash line.  Finish by sweeping lashes with Inimitable Intense mascara.

For cheeks, apply Giggly blush on the apples of the cheeks and pat towards the temple with fingers.

For lips, apply Cherry Blossom for a complementing lip.

Urban Decay Rollergirl Summer 2011 Palette

Urban Decay Rollergirl Eyeshadow Palette ($32.00) contains four eyeshadows, minature lipgloss, and miniature eyeliner. These include: Woodstock (bright pink with sligh shimmer), Verve (pearly oyster), Suspect (oyster with dimensional shift), Darkhorse (bronze patina), Crush (bright hot pink), and Whiskey (dark brown). Each eyeshadow contains 0.04 oz., while the lipgloss contains 0.12 fl. oz and the eyeliner is 0.03 oz. The palette contains $54.40 worth of eyeshadow, $6.70 worth of lipgloss, and $12.75 worth of eyeliner. The total value of the palette is $73.85.

• Woodstock is a dark fuchsia pink with a soft frost finish. Very pigmented, super smooth. This is permanently available.
• Verve is a pale, muted taupe brown–like a lighter Mushroom. This is an exclusive shade to this palette.
• Suspect is a muted champagne bronze with a frost finish. This shade was in the Book of Shadows, Vol. III.
• Darkhorse is a dark, sultry bronze shimmered brown. This shade was in the Naked and Feminine palettes.
• Crush is a semi-sheer magenta pink. It’s almost like magenta met bubblegum pink, and then they had a lovechild. This is permanently available. For a full review of the formula, please see my original review.
• Whiskey is a medium-dark, warm-toned brown. This shade was originally available with the Naked palette and is currently available as part of an eyeliner duo (with Flipside).

It is similar to last summer’s palette release called Summer of Love, which was in the same format, but instead of a lip gloss, had a miniature-sized primer. It retailed for $29, so I expect pricing to be around there. As soon as I have pricing/availability information, I’ll be sure to update this post!

	Urban Decay Rollergirl Summer 2011 Eyeshadow Palette A
	Urban Decay always puts out really pretty palettes, from the color selection to the way they do the packaging. The palette has repeats as many of Urban Decay’s palettes often do, which is definitely a drawback for long-time fans. For those new to the brand, it’s a nice neutral palette with a hot pink kick. If you’re just into neutrals though, you may want to consider the Naked palette if you have $48 to spend.

Urban Decay Fun Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 for 0.34 oz.) includes six eyeshadows: Woodstock (bright pink with slight shimmer), Baked (rich bronze), Uzi (metallic silver with big iridescent sparkles), Sin (champagne), Flipside (electric teal with blue sheen), and Psychedelic Sister (bright purple). Also included is Oil Slick 24/7 Liner (black with silver sparkle) and the original primer potion (nude).

• Woodstock is a medium-dark fuchsia pink with a soft shimmer finish. This shade is available individually as part of the permanent range.

my thoughts on the formula: Urban Decay’s eyeshadows are rich in pigment, apply evenly, and feel like butter. Generally speaking, their formula is excellent. I will warn and caution you against their shades with “glitter” or “sparkle” in the finish–some of these can be prone to fall out (for example, Midnight Cowboy Rides Again).

In terms of value, the palette includes 0.18 oz. of eyeshadow ($61.20 value), 0.03 oz. of eyeliner ($12.75 value), and 0.13 fl. oz. of primer potion ($6.88 value). The total value of the palette is $80.83, while the retail price is $34.

I think sometimes we lose sight of what the beauty industry and market are like as a whole — not every person purchases every palette or even much at all. Not everyone enters at the same time, so even though you may find yourself owning many of the shades, it doesn’t make it a terrible product – Urban Decay does some really excellent shades that you can get year round, but these sure make those shades more accessible and affordable to people who don’t have a lot of Urban Decay or have always wanted to try it. It would be great to see new shades, of course, but I recognize what value they may hold to others.

final thoughts: Fun has the most shades that are permanent/available individually, as they are all available whenever your heart desires. Whether it’s a good value/purchase depends on just how many Urban Decay products you have in your arsenal. The palette itself is an excellent value, and if you like more than two shadows, it works out to be the same if you had bought then individually ($17 each). Uzi has a slightly fussy finish/texture, but the other five eyeshadows are really nice, especially Woodstock and Baked.
