Urban Decay Electric 24/7 Eye Pencils Set

Urban Decay Electric 24/7 Eye Pencils Set ($32.00) includes five travel-sized versions of: Perversion (matte darkest black), Ransom (deep shimmery purple with blue shift), Woodstock (shimmery hot pink), Radium (shimmery bright blue), and Junkie (bright green with gold sparkle).

I’m a long-time fan of the 24/7 Eye Pencils, because they have just enough creaminess for easy gliding across the lash line but not so much that it results in smudging or running. It has a large color range, and they last quite awhile. When I’m doing a look, I often reach for this formula, because it wears all day for me.

• Perversion is a really deep, dark black with a matte finish. It’s very creamy (more so than the majority of the 24/7 Pencils) but still works well.
• Ransom is a violet purple with a subtle red undertone and a satiny sheen. The pigmentation is hit or miss; over the years, I’ve had great color from Ransom pencils, but some pencils yield less (the one I received in this set was more of a dud).  The most comparable liner would be Woodstock (the liquid eyeliner).
• Woodstock is a fuchsia-red pink with a satiny sheen. The pigmentation was decent but not fully opaque in a single pass. It is buildable (see the larger swatch).
• Radium is a brightened medium blue with a subtle, silvery sheen. It’s nicely pigmented in a single pass.
• Junkie is a bluish-teal color base with green and gold sparkle. It is similar to MAC Undercurrent — but it seems to have a slightly darker, blue base.

I probably gripe about this each year, but it’s always frustrating as long-time Urban Decay buyer to see these kits, because Urban Decay loves to include a few never-before-seen shades into each kit among shades you might already own.  The Electric Set is the best set to fight against that trend, as Woodstock, Radium, and Junkie are all new and exclusive to the set, and Perversion was only available in the 15th Anniversary set.  I also like how they made one set dominated by bold shades and the other more neutral.  Nevertheless, each shade is 0.03 oz. and a full-sized version is 0.04 oz. and costs $18 a pop–so this kit has $67.50 worth of eyeliner for $32.

MAC Venomous Villains Look:  Evil Queen

Here’s a look using just the products from the Evil Queen’s portion of Venomous Villains.  I wanted to come up with something that utilized that color palette just to show you a possibility of how they’d come together.

While I really like the eyeshadows together, I had trouble pairing the lips using the products from the Evil Queen.  Sinister felt a little dark, and it definitely needs a lipgloss on top (it’s a little streaky), but Hot House would have made for a very strong, dramatic look overall, and I wanted something more wearable.

Though I wasn’t keen on pairing corals with such a cool-eyed look, I figured–why not give it a try?  Let’s see how it works!  Not horrible but not my favorite.  Something like Snob or VG Gaga (or any of the numerous limited edition variations thereof) would have worked beautifully–even if topped with Strange Potion.

You will need the following…

• Eyes: NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base (neutral eyeshadow base), MAC Her Alter Image Eyeshadow (pale lilac), MAC Vainglorious Eyeshadow (bronzed burgundy), MAC Vile Violet Eyeshadow (deep, muted grayed purple), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow (highlighter), Urban Decay Ransom 24/7 Liner (iridescent violet), MAC Plushlash Mascara (black)
• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
• Cheeks: MAC Oh So Fair Beauty Powder (pale pink)
• Lips: MAC Strange Potion Lipglass (pale pinky coral)
• Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: Her Alter Image = Beautiful Iris; Vainglorious = Star Violet; Vile Violet = Indian Ink; Oh So Fair = Well Dressed; Strange Potion = Wonderstruck

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Her Alter Image eyeshadow on the inner half of the lid and pull upwards along the inner crease. Lightly blend Vainglorious eyeshadow on the outer half of the lid and into the crease with the 226. Next, apply Vile Violet eyeshadow onto the middle of the lid with the 236, lightly blending onto the outer lid. Blend Trench eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Ransom liner on the lower lash line. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Oh So Fair beauty powder on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Strange Potion lipglass for a complementing lip.

I mentioned last look that the next one would definitely have some color, and I’d say this one certainly does!

I thought I’d show a really cool, pale pink kind of lip with this look (I’m a bit warm-toned for it, IMO, but my boyfriend adores the color — go figure), but also how a brighter pink lip can also work (even though it is heavier).  That’s what’s so fun about makeup:  you can experiment and if you don’t like it, you can change it, remove it, or play around with it.

If I had planned to wear this look out, I likely would have gone for something in-between — maybe Sweetie lipstick and Crystal Rose lipglass. I just thought it’d be cool to show you how much lip color can play a role in the overall look–plus a fun cool-toned lip combo for my cool-toned ladies (and gents!).

Directions: Start by applying Soft Ochre paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid and brow area with the 249. Put one drop of MAC Water-Based Mixing Medium onto a brush like the 239, and then apply Pink Pearl pigment on the lid itself as a colored base. Using the 239, apply Seedy Pearl eyeshadow on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply Beautiful Iris eyeshadow on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with Stars n’ Rockets eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Next, define the crease by applying Fig. 1 eyeshadow with the 226. Add more depth to crease by gently tapping Passionate eyeshadow into the lower crease, just below Fig. 1. Lightly tap and brush Beautiful Iris eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Femme-fi eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Urban Decay Ransom Liner on the lower lash line, blended with Beautiful Iris eyeshadow applied with the 219. Apply Penultimate eyeliner on the upper lash line, and then sweeping lashes with Studio Fix mascara.

For cheeks, apply Petalpoint blush to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116 and highlight cheekbones with Rose Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 165.

For lips, apply Saint Germain lipstick first, then layer over Icescape lipglass for a pale lip. For more color, try Style Minx lipglass on top.

On the outer lid and crease, apply #92 eyeshadow with the 226. Darken crease with #159 eyeshadow using the 219, and then blend out with the 226. Sweep MAC Nylon eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight with the 217. Apply Urban Decay Ransom 24/7 Liner on lower lash line. Smudge lower lash line with #151 eyeshadow with the 214 brush, pressing into lower lashes. Apply Aqua Smoky Lash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with MAC Petalpoint Blush using the 129. Apply Urban Decay Naked lipstick to lips, and then top with MAC Crystal Rose lipglass for color and shine.

I’m feeling encouraged by yesterday’s look post (because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post this since it was more experimental than anything else), so I wanted to share with you a look I attempted a week or so ago. I wanted to try a color combination I hadn’t done before (it’s not always easy to think of something that is different AND could work!), and this is what I came up with. I didn’t like it at first, but as I looked at it throughout the day, I decided I really liked the eyes and thought the application was better than my usual is. I just had no idea what kind of lip color made a good pairing! Nude looked odd, too purple looked odd, and too pink doesn’t seem like it complements. I was thinking maybe a really shamelessly bold, wine/burgundy/purple lip might have rocked it (think Rebel lipstick).

You will need the following…

Apply Overgrown eyeshadow to the middle and outer portions of the lid. Darken crease with Fig. 1 eyeshadow using the 226, then deepen with Shadowy Lady eyeshadow with the 219. Sweep Crystal Avalanche eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Urban Decay Ransom Liner on lower lash line. Apply Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 188. Apply Fun Fun lipstick to lips, and then top with Tartlette lipglass for color and shine.
