Blue-Teal Eyeliners: Your Guide

I am a fiend for teal eyeliner–there is absolutely no doubt about that–and here are fifteen shades that seemed like blue-based teals (a few turned out to be a little green-based).

Make Up For Ever #12L is a darkened blue with a hint of teal. It is more shimmery than Tom Ford Exotic Teal.
Milani Aqua is a brightened teal with a hint of blue and frosted finish.
Urban Decay Flipside is a lightened blue-teal with a shimmery finish. It is lighter than Milani Aqua.
Tarina Tarantino Spark of Envy is a darkened teal with a blue-based and a green-tinged shimmer/sheen.
Stila Peacock is a deep blue with a hint of teal and light sheen.
Tom Ford Exotic Teal is a deep, dark blue-based teal.
Estee Lauder Dramatic Teal is a dark, blue-based teal with a matte finish. It is a touch bluer than Tom Ford Exotic Teal. (LE)

This is a tutorial, but it’s also more about me going through the process of using just two eyeshadows, not loving the result, and trying to work it into something I did like. Not everything always turns out according to what we envision, and sometimes, it may not even be perfect at the end, but each time we do something, it’s just part of the learning process!

A Tale of Two Eyeshadows… Stream of Consciousness

I was really, truly determined to just two eyeshadows in this look (not including the highlighter, pfft!), but of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I have a tutorial for this look, and it’s more like a stream of consciousness than a tutorial, because you’ll see me going through the whole process of wanting to keep it at just two but not being happy with it the way it turned out. I originally planned just Gorgeous Gold and Shimmermoss, but I wanted more oomph in the crease, so I then tried Winkle, which was a bit light, so I went to Atlantic Blue, which was lovely, but blending on top of frostier finishes (like Shimmermoss) can be difficult.

This is all to say that this is more like a “work in progress” kind of look. If I were to do it all over again, I would start with Atlantic Blue in the crease, skip Winkle altogether, and may even skip Shimmermoss–but definitely layer the matte shade on prior to the frostier shade.

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow all over the lower lid. Lightly blend Shimmermoss eyeshadow in the outer crease and third of the lid with the 226. Next, apply Winkle eyeshadow into the crease with the 226, lightly blending onto the outer lid. Define the crease with Atlantic Blue eyeshadow and the 226. Blend Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow with the crease shade and then highlight the brow bone with Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow. Bring everything together by applying Flipside liner on the lower lash line, then smudge with Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Echo blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116, then lightly pat Amber Diamond on the cheekbones.

For lips, apply Crosswires lipstick first, and then layer Nymphette lipglass for a complementing lip.

There’s something about this look that reminds me of the beach, yet it’s not exactly beach colors. Oh, well! I wonder if it’s totally obvious that I love me some chartreuse green… Happy Monday!

You will need the following…

Eyes: NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base (neutral eyeshadow base), MAC Sour Lemon Eyeshadow (chatreuse), MAC Samoa Silk Eyeshadow (peach), MAC Vibrant Grape Eyeshadow (red-toned purple), MAC Orb Eyeshadow (matte highlighter), MAC Femme-fi Eyeshadow (shimmery highlighter), Urban Decay Flipside 24/7 Liner (teal), MAC Plushlash Mascara (black)
Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
Cheeks: Benefit Sugarbomb Powder (pinky-peach)
Lips: MAC Capricious Lipstick (muted purple-plum), MAC Springbean Lustreglass (sheer green-gold)
Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
Substitutes:

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Sour Lemon eyeshadow on the lower lid. Lightly blend Samoa Silk eyeshadow from the lower crease to above the crease with the 239. Next, apply Vibrant Grape eyeshadow into the crease with the 226. Blend Orb eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone, then lightly tap Femme-fi eyeshadow right beneath the brow for shimmer. Bring everything together by applying Flipside liner on the lower lash line. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Sugarbomb blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Capricious lipstick first, and then layer Springbean lustreglass for a complementing lip.

Spring Makeup: Gold, Green, & Teal with Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Palette

I love the lips for this look. It’s my new favorite lip combo, and as soon as I slipped on Le Metier de Beaute Apricot Creme, I completely remember why I shelled out $36 for it. In fact, I think I’m going to place an order for a few more later this week!

My major criticisms of the Urban Decay palette (aside from the lack of new shades) were: lack of matte/satin finished eyeshadows and lack of a highlighter. The glittery shades definitely leave a nice mess of glitter beneath the eye — so I recommend applying your eyeshadow first and then cleaning up afterward, at which point you can apply your face makeup (foundation, blush, etc.). I used Lancome Bi-Facil on a cotton round to remove the majority of the glitter, and then my tinted moisturizer covered up any remaining bits. Just for fun, I included a photo of the glitter that fell out during application.

Even though I love me some shimmery, frosty eyeshadows, I do like more variety in finishes these days, even if it’s only a subtle difference in the end result. I kind of felt like this look was too frosty; maybe if the brow bone had a semi-matte or satin eyeshadow instead, it wouldn’t have been the case. As always, I deliberately tried to use only the eyeshadows found in the palette, but going forward, I just don’t think I can do that. I need a less garish highlighter (there are only two potential highlighters: White Rabbit, which is too glittery and white on me; and Drink Me, Eat Me, which can lean frosty). Even still, I ended up throwing on a little MAC Nylon to yellow-up the brow bone (in the full face photos), because the peachy champagne shade wasn’t working on my skin tone as a highlighter (at least not with these shades).

You will need the following…

Eyes: Urban Decay Primer Potion (eyeshadow base), Urban Decay White Rabbit (Polyester Bride) Eyeshadow (white gold), Urban Decay Wonderland (Maui Wowie) Eyeshadow (tarnished gold), Urban Decay Absolem (Homegrown) Eyeshadow (grassy green), Urban Decay Alice (Painkiller) Eyeshadow (aqua blue), Urban Decay Drink Me, Eat Me (Sin) Eyeshadow (peachy champagne), MAC Nylon Eyeshadow (white-gold), Urban Decay Flipside 24/7 Liner (aqua blue), MAC Plushlash Mascara (black)
Face: Kiehl’s Tinted Moisturizer (medium)
Cheeks: Illamasqua Lover Blush (peachy orange)
Lips: Guerlain Corail Passion KissKiss Lipstick (coral-orange), Le Metier de Beaute Apricot Creme Lip Gloss (creamy soft apricot-peach)
Brushes: 226 (fluffy crease brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
Substitutes: For MAC substitutes, consider Phloof!, Patina, Swimming, Aquadisiac, Nylon

For eyes, start by applying Primer Potion as your eyeshadow base all over the lid with the 249. Using the 239, apply White Rabbit eyeshadow on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply Wonderland eyeshadow on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with Absolem eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Lightly blend Alice eyeshadow, with the 239, on the outer corner and lid. Lightly tap and brush White Rabbit eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Drink Me, Eat Me eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. (I also later added Nylon eyeshadow on the brow bone to make it look less stark on me.) Bring everything together by applying Flipside eyeliner on the lower lash line. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Lover blush to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Corail Passion lipstick first, and then layer Apricot Creme lipgloss for a complementing lip.

Look – Dramatic Blue & Teal Look with False Eyelashes

Yesterday, I was SO excited! Why? Because I applied false eyelashes for the first time to myself without it taking all day long. False eyelash application is most definitely an area where I lack expertise in (I can tell you all the tricks–I just can’t get them to work for me!), and one of the issues is I just can’t afford to spend an hour fussing with applying them. I don’t even just sit down and watch TV — I’m writing posts or taking photos or going through notes! I am just hoping maybe it’s all finally clicked for me, and I’ll be able to replicate my success next time, LOL!

I’d also like to add that in this look, I am using Korres’ Watermelon Lightweight Tinted Moisturizer SPF30 (you can expect a review later, but just for reference!). The pictures make it look a bit dewy, but I think that’s just me hot after blow-drying my hair. All in all, though, this is one of my favorite looks I’ve done lately, maybe overall, too Hope you like it!

Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral beige base), Mutiny pigment (aqua-blue), Parrot eyeshadow (blue with teal), Moon’s Reflection eyeshadow (silvery blue), Prussian eyeshadow (dark blue), Atlantic Blue eyeshadow (bright violet-blue), Femme-fi eyeshadow (highlighter), #7 lashes (false eyelashes), Blacktrack fluidline (black), Urban Decay Flipside 24/7 Liner (teal), Plushlash mascara (black)
Cheeks: Enough Said blush (bronzy-orange), Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer (bronzy highlighter)
Lips: Brave New Bronze lipstick (pinky nude), Goldyrocks dazzleglass (gold shimmer)
Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
Substitutes: Mutiny = Teal + Frost; Parrot = Shimmermoss; Enough Said = bronzer; Brave New Bronze = Velvet Teddy;

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. With the 239, apply Mutiny pigment with water-based mixing medium on the lower lid. On the inner lid, pack Mutiny pigment on using the 239. Apply Parrot eyeshadow to the middle of the lid. Darken the outer lid using Moon’s Reflection eyeshadow using the 239. Darken crease with Atlantic Blue eyeshadow using the 226, then deepen with Prussian eyeshadow. Sweep Femme-fi eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Urban Decay Flipside Liner on lower lash line, and Blacktrack fluidline on the upper lash line using the 209. Apply #7 lashes to upper lash line, then lightly apply Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Enough Said blush using the 129, then highlight with Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 188. Apply Brave New Bronze lipstick to lips, and then top with Goldyrocks dazzleglass for color and shine.
