MAC is Beauty Lipsticks
MAC is Beauty Lipsticks

This set of MAC is Beauty Lipsticks ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is more of a miss as all six in this post have a Lustre finish. This type of finish is characterized by sheerer color payoff and a shinier finish by design. Unfortunately, my experience with these (and Lustres in general) is uncomfortable, as they are drying. They’re typically shorter-wearing (two to three hours) and some can apply unevenly. If you normally find this finish hydrating, these may perform like past Lustres, as these performed consistent with past Lustres for me (I just don’t have good results!).

Call the Hairdresser! is described as a “rosy mauve [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a muted, rosy coral with warm undertones and a soft sheen. It had semi-sheer color coverage that went on fairly evenly. This shade wore well for almost three hours but was drying. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Catty is described as a “light creamy pink [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light pink with warm, yellow undertones and a soft shine. It had semi-opaque color coverage–more than you’d expect given the finish–but goes on a bit unevenly and is very prone to settling into lip lines. I experienced settling after initial application, which worsened as the color wore away in an hour and a half. It was also drying. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

French Twist is described as a “light pink nude [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a muted, light-medium peachy beige with warm undertones and a soft shine. It had semi-opaque color coverage that went on fairly evenly but did have some streakiness. I had some settling into lip lines both initially as well as over time. This shade lasted for two hours on me and was drying. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Highlights is described as a “very pale creamy peach [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light, muted gold with warm, yellow undertones and a gold, frosted sheen. It had sheer pigmentation that highlighted every lip line on my bottom lip (this was probably the second or third shade I had even applied for swatching, so I was truly surprised at how dry this made my lips look!). The formula looked a bit uneven in places. This shade was gone within an hour of wear and seemed drying (always harder to tell with short wear like that). Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Notice Me is described as a “pale lilac [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light lavender with a hint of pink and a luminous sheen. It applied unevenly and yielded semi-opaque color coverage. It wore well for two hours and was drying over time with some of the color settling into lip lines. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Pure Vanity is described as a “pale peach nude [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light-medium, peachy beige with warm undertones and a soft sheen. It is brighter than French Twist by a little bit. It had semi-sheer color coverage that applied fairly evenly but could have been better. It lasted for two hours on me, was lightly drying, and some color settled into lip lines. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Elise (448) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “pink lilac.” It’s a softened, medium pink with cool undertones and a subtle, pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage with a fair amount of translucency; if you have more pigmented lips than myself, you may find it even less noticeable applied. The texture was lightweight, emollient, and lightly hydrating, though it lasted two and a half hours and didn’t apply evenly. NARS Marisa (P, $32.00) is more opaque, lighter. Givenchy Hibiscus Exclusif (302) (P, $36.00) is brighter. Guerlain Geraldine (77) (P, $51.00) is brighter. Estee Lauder Powerful (P, $30.00) is more opaque, lighter. MAC What a Feeling! (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Too Faced Razzle Dazzle Rose (P, $22.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Ina (450) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “bright fuchsia.” It’s an iridescent fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a pearly finish. This shade had less of a luminous or glossy finish, and instead, it had more that reflective sheen you get from shimmer or frost. The coverage was only semi-sheer to semi-opaque. It was neither drying nor hydrating and lasted for two and a half hours on me. Tom Ford Beauty Francesco (LE, $32.00) is more opaque, brighter. Tom Ford Beauty John (LE, $32.00) is brighter, more shimmery. Bobbi Brown Hot Berry (P, $26.00) is darker, brighter. NARS Janet (P, $32.00) is darker. Chanel Viva (95) (LE, $35.00) is similar. MAC Quite the Thing! (LE, $17.00) is darker. MAC Heavenly Hybrid (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. MAC Feeling Amorous? (LE, $20.00) is brighter. MAC Pink Poodle (DC, $16.00) is brighter, lighter. Revlon Fuchsia Shock (P, $7.99) is similar. Revlon Sorbet (P, $7.49) is redder. MAC Lickable (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Emilienne (452) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “intense pink violet.” It’s a muted, reddish-pink with subtle fuchsia and pink pearl. It had semi-opaque coverage with some translucency as the consistency was thinner but had some slip, so it was comfortable to wear. It wore well for four hours and was lightly hydrating. Guerlain Very Pink (360) (P, $37.00) is lighter. Guerlain Gladys (78) (P, $51.00) is darker. Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) (LE, $51.00) is darker. YSL Rose Asarine (34) (P, $34.00) is warmer. MAC Feeling Amorous? (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Too Faced Jelly Bean (P, $22.00) is brighter. Revlon Whimsical (115) (P, $8.99) is cooler-toned. Guerlain Illusion (660) (LE, $35.00) is darker. Chanel Suspense (P, $35.00) is similar. Revlon Sorbet (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned. NARS Jardin des Plantes (P, $25.00) is more matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Givenchy Delicate (9) Prisme Quatuor
Givenchy Delicate (9) Prisme Quatuor

Givenchy Delicate (9) Prisme Quatuor ($58.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a set of lightly warm-toned neutrals with more matte finishes. Often, when a new formula comes out, I try to pick a shade that is more of a “gimme” and one that may be more challenging, and if a brand can’t put out decent warm-toned neutrals, then it really isn’t looking good for the formula. This quad is better than Tentation, but it still suffers from a texture that while soft to the touch, is firmer that makes it harder to blend and apply. I was able to get a decent look out of it, and it was only the deepest shade that was really difficult to work with. I don’t recommend it, because I think you can get better performing neutrals right out-of-the-palette at an assortment of prices equal or less than this from a myriad of brands, but if you were looking to make it work, I would highly recommend a primer or good base underneath to help combat some of the blending, pigmentation, and longevity issues present.

Delicate #1 is a medium-dark brown with warm, golden yellow undertones and a satin sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a drier, thinner consistency that stuck to the skin but didn’t move well. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear. MAC Choco Cake (LE, $15.00) is less warm-toned. LORAC Unedited (P) is slightly darker. Too Faced Truffled (P, $16.00) is similar. Colour Pop Farah (P, $5.00) is a cream product. Kat Von D Leather (LE) is similar. MAC Clove (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Stila Being (P) is lighter. Make Up For Ever S616 Chocolate (P, $21.00) is similar. Urban Decay Vengeance (LE, $18.00) is darker. MAC A Harvest of Greens #4 (P, $21.00) is similar. Chanel Charming #4 (LE) is darker. MAC Swiss Chocolate (P, $15.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Delicate #2 is a medium, golden brown with a satin finish. It had good color payoff with a fairly blendable, moderately soft texture that was workable. It lasted for seven hours on me before fading. MAC Mumu (LE, $15.00) is more matte. LORAC Undeniable (P) is less warm-toned. Too Faced Mousse (P, $16.00) is darker. Colour Pop Desert (P, $5.00) is a cream product. Makeup Geek Preppy (P, $5.99) is darker. Anastasia Caramel (P, $12.00) is warmer. Makeup Geek Desert Sands (LE, $5.99) is warmer. Make Up For Ever M660 Speculous (P, $21.00) is slightly warmer, more matte. LORAC Nude #4 (LE) is darker. Urban Decay Tyranny (LE, $18.00) is cooler-toned, more matte. Kat Von D Glasswing (P) is more matte. MAC Butterfudge (P, $15.00) is similar. MAC Brownluxe #2 (P) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Delicate #3 is a light-medium, golden beige-brown with warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage with a drier, thin texture that wasn’t powdery but required building on the lid. It blended decently but faded after six and a half hours. MAC Mumu (LE, $15.00) is darker. LORAC Undeniable (P) is darker. Colour Pop Smash (P, $5.00) is more shimmery. Too Faced Fawned of You (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. theBalm Score (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. Tarte Tan-gled Up in You (LE) is darker. Make Up For Ever S642 Sahara (P, $21.00) is similar. Make Up For Ever M536 Milk Tea (P, $21.00) is lighter. Milani Bella Cappuccino (03) (P, $4.49) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Delicate #4 is a brightened ivory with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff that was soft and blendable but thin. It lasted for six hours on me. It’s a more basic shade, so there are a lot of very, very similar options. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow
Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

For spring, there are five new, limited edition shades of Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows ($6.99 for 0.14 oz. each). They’ve just popped up locally for me, and as far as I know, you’ll probably have to track them down in-store if any of them appeal to you (usually, limited edition collections from drugstore brands aren’t available online).

All five had a slight greasy quality to them–slightly thinner but more slip than you’d expect and a bit heavy–but surprisingly, they lasted anywhere from 10 to 16 hours on me before creasing (which isn’t “24 hour wear without creasing or fading”), which is good wear for a cream eyeshadow but shorter than average wear for the original Color Tattoos (last spring I tested shades for 16 hours and didn’t have fading/creasing at that point). Every time I see a 24-hour wear time claim, I feel like I’m watching someone go into a pitch black basement in a horror movie screaming, “NOOOOO!”

The bigger issue I had with these was that they were harder to apply; they just didn’t have even, smooth coverage. They blend with each other nicely, but there were as of the lid where color was semi-sheer and other areas where the color would be mostly opaque. The only shade that didn’t have that issue was Black Orchid, which would be my top pick out of the bunch. I think these are best used as colored eyeshadows bases or as sheer washes of lighter, more shimmery/metallic eyeshadow, but if you want really opaque, smooth, true-to-pot color, you’ll be disappointed.

Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a cool-toned, light-medium pink with a silvery-white frost finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage and lasted for twelve hours before starting to crease. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hibiscus Heartbreak (125) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a muted, medium lavender with a cool undertone and warmer, golden pearl that gives it a more metallic finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, looked uneven applied, and lasted for ten and a half hours before I noticed very slight creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Black Orchid (130) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a medium-dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a gray overcast. It had mostly opaque coverage and had a slightly thicker consistency compared to the other shades in the spring set (more in line with the originals). It was browner when sheered out, and you lost a lot of the gray as a result. It wore well for sixteen hours, and I saw very slight fading but no creasing at that point. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hydrangea Hype (135) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a brightened, light-medium silvery blue with a metallic sheen. When it is sheered out, it is even lighter and more dominated by its silver tones. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that went on unevenly and tended to streak. It lasted for ten hours on me before I noticed creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Rose Riot (140) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a gold, frosted metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage that was best applied as a sheer wash, as it didn’t go on evenly due to the higher slip of the product. This shade lasted for twelve hours before creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) has been reinvented with a “renovated formula and vibrant colour spectrum.” Each shade is “inspired by Coco Chanel and her closest friends.” The formula is touted as “ultra hydrating,” “rich,” “bright,” and “luminous.” The texture is lightweight with moderate slip so it glides on without tugging. These were comfortable to wear, but they weren’t “ultra hydrating” to me, and the color payoff didn’t see vibrant, rich, or bright.

Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “bright pink.” It’s a muted, light-medium pink with subtle warm undertones and barely-there golden shimmer. (Bright pink it is definitely not.) It’s semi-sheer with a luminous sheen. The formula was neither hydrating nor drying, and it lasted for an hour and a half on me. Guerlain Rosy Silk (LE, $37.00) is less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Ian (LE, $32.00) is cooler-toned. Chanel Intime (93) (P, $35.00) is lighter. Estee Lauder Impulsive (P, $30.00) is warmer, less shimmery. YSL Corail Jalouse (32) (P, $34.00) is brighter, less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Summer Fling (04) (LE, $49.00) is warmer. Too Faced Taffy (P, $22.00) is less shimmery. Revlon Pink Lemonade (P, $7.49) is slightly less shimmery. MAC Giddy (P, $16.00) is brighter. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is lighter. Chanel Jersey Rose (P, $34.00) is darker, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Cecile (432) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “soft rosewood.” It’s a muted, medium rosy pink with warm undertones and a soft, frosted shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a creamy, lightweight texture that went on evenly. It lasted for three and a half hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Tarte Rare (LE) is brighter, warmer. Givenchy Nude Guipure (106) (P, $36.00) is less shimmery. Estee Lauder Dynamic (P, $30.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Summer Fling (04) (LE, $49.00) is lighter. MAC Morning Rose (LE, $16.00) is darker. Chanel Equivoque (126) (LE, $34.00) is darker. NYX Blush (P, $4.00) is less shimmery. Guerlain Rose Desir (LE, $51.00) is cooler-toned. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is lighter. Guerlain Romance (LE, $35.00) is more shimmery. Chanel Jersey Rose (P, $34.00) is lighter. Chanel Gardenia (P, $34.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Suzanne (438) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as am “intense rosewood.” It’s a softened, medium-dark rosy plum with warm undertones and a soft, shimmery sheen. It was less luminous compared to the other two shades, but it had the most color payoff–mostly opaque but with some translucency, so the natural lip color will still come through. It wore well for four hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC Marque (P, $23.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Guerlain Air Kiss (304) (P, $37.00) is darker. Buxom Dolly (LE, $21.00) is lighter. MAC Mystical (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Estee Lauder Irresistible (P, $30.00) is lighter, less shimmery, more muted. MAC Out for Passion (LE, $20.00) is warmer. MAC Morning Rose (LE, $16.00) is lighter more shimmery. Chanel Ce Soir (P, $34.00) is less shimmery. MAC Glamourdaze (LE, $16.00) is darker. Guerlain Gracia (P, $51.00) is slightly warmer. Buxom Hooligan (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Estee Lauder Burgundy Suede Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil
Estee Lauder Burgundy Suede Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil

Estee Lauder Burgundy Suede Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil ($23.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a darkened burgundy purple with warm undertones and subtle pearly shimmer. It has a very waxy base, so while it glides across the skin without tugging, the color payoff in a single stroke is semi-sheer. It was buildable to mostly opaque color, and while I love the color but don’t find the formula to be particularly long-wearing as it thins after seven hours of wear. MAC Nightshade (LE, $16.00) is similar. Urban Decay Darkside (P, $19.00) is darker. MAC Strong Willed (P, $20.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Raven (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer. bareMinerals 6AM (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Estee Lauder Electric Cobalt Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil ($23.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a brightened, medium blue with a pearly sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in a single pass, which was buildable to opaque color in two to three layers. It had the same waxy, glide-on texture that made it comfortable to apply but just not an intensely pigmented product. It wore well for seven hours before migrating towards the outer corner. Kat Von D D.R.A. (P, $10.00) is warmer. Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief (P, $15.00) is very similar. Urban Decay Radium (P, $19.00) is very similar. Urban Decay Abyss (P, $19.00) is slightly warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Estee Lauder Emerald Volt Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil ($23.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a darkened green-teal with a pearly sheen. It had mostly opaque pigmentation in one pass, and the texture was better balanced between creamy and waxy, so it glided on, deposited even, rich color, and didn’t run. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Sephora Collection Good Mood (P, $9.00) is greener. Make Up For Ever #52L (LE, $19.00) is lighter. MAC Blue Noon (LE, $16.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
