theBalm #13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 Eyeshadows

#13 is a dark, muted reddish burgundy with a satin-matte finish. It had fairly good color payoff, but the texture was somewhat powdery. It wore well for eight hours before showing signs of fading. Tom Ford Beauty Orchid Haze #4 (P) is purpler. Laura Mercier Kir Royal (P, $22.00) is more shimmery. MAC Festive Delight (LE, $15.00) is brighter. Chanel Eclosion #4 (P) is brighter, purpler, more shimmery. Le Metier de Beaute Crucible (LE, $30.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Formula X Alive, Dynamic, Over the Top Nail Lacquers

For spring, Formula X introduced five new shades in “The Cut.” In general, I’m a fan of Formula X’s lacquer formula, as it is pigmented, long-wearing, and easy to apply. I had trouble with the three shades I tried from the five new ones (I do not have the other two)–they were streaky, with Dynamic being just slightly streaky and troublesome but the end result was manageable, while the other two were noticeably uneven. All three were slightly thick in consistency, though they dried down a little faster than average and had naturally shiny finishes.

Hourglass Verse Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss

Hourglass Verse Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss ($28.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “light beige shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, peachy-beige with bronze and lighter peach shimmer. MAC Nectarsweet (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Freestyle (P, $20.00) is darker. bareMinerals Dazzler (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery. Revlon Peach (P, $7.49) is similar. MAC Sublime Shine (LE, $20.00) is simiar. MAC Satin Slip (LE, $20.00) is slightly warmer. See comparison swatches.

MAC Great Beyond Mineralize Eyeshadow

MAC Great Beyond Mineralize Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a cool-toned mix of plum, purple, and lavender. The plum is on the warmer side, but the other shades are neutral to definitely cool-toned. I thought these shades felt a lot less powdery than the other eyeshadows in the collection, but they had similar issues when worn–six hours or less of decent wear, not fully pigmented even when applied with a dampened brush. I feel like this collection isn’t a step forward in the Mineralize formula but a real regression.

MAC A Fantasy of Flowers Cremesheen Glasses

For spring, MAC has six shades of Cremesheen Glass ($20.00 for 0.09 fl. oz.) in the A Fantasy of Flowers Collection due in-stores on the 6th. Three shades–Galaxy Rose, Pagoda, and Star Quality–are repromotes, while the other three–Flare of Fantasy, Nectarsweet, and Playful Petal–are new; all are limited edition. The formula is light-medium in thickness, creamy, non-sticky, and comfortable to wear, but it is a very short-wearing gloss on me (I usually get three to four hours on average with most gloss formulas) and tends to wear two hours or less. The other major downside is that each gloss contains about half as much gloss as the average gloss; MAC Lipglass contains 0.17 fl. oz. and costs less, so that’s just something to keep in mind as the containers look quite large but aren’t actually that big on the interior.

MAC in the Meadow Mineralize Eyeshadow

MAC in the Meadow Mineralize Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a single eyeshadow with four quadrants–like a pinwheel. Long-time readers will know that I’m not a huge fan of the Mineralize Eyeshadow formula, and this iteration doesn’t do much to sway me otherwise. The texture was on the dry side across the board, and it’s a product that doesn’t wear well–I get six hours of wear in total, but I noticed some fading after five hours. If I don’t use an eyeshadow base or apply these with a damp brush, the colors instantly look faded when I’ve applied them. They’re just so prone to fading away!
