MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish
MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish

MAC Apres Chic: Stereo Rose Returns!

MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish ($29.00 for 0.32 oz.) is described as a “coral with golden bronze shimmering nuances.” It’s a coral with subtle pink tones and a champagne-gold shimmer. I think the blush gallery for corals is bursting at the seems, as over the years, brands have caught on that a large lot of us are coral fiends. MAC Born to Love is pinker, less shimmery. Buxom Luvitate is softer, more of a sheen than a shimmer. Tom Ford Lovelust is pinker, less metallic. Chanel Tweed Brun is more orange.

I reviewed Stereo Rose back when it was re-released in 2010, and it was hard to get then, because it was such a huge re-release. In 2010, it sold out in minute of going online–I had to go to my local store (at the time) to purchase it in-person! This time around, while still coveted, there is plenty of stock available. I don’t own the original version, only the 2010 and this version.

Mineralize Skinfinishes can vary quite a bit, which is the nature of the product; the right (or wrong) mix of veining can make or break a shade. There are some who only purchase in-store so they can pick the exact veining mix they desire! The one I purchased this time around has a bit more pink in it, but it still blends out to about the same color when swirled and applied altogether. It has a high-frost, almost metallic finish to it–for something less reflective, I suggest using a stippling brush like MAC’s 187 and applying with a light hand–so reflective that it manages not to emphasize pores.

On me, it lasted for six hours before starting to fade and get a bit patchy, which is about what I tend to get with MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinishes. The texture is soft, not powdery, and finely-milled. Stereo Rose is also nicely pigmented, so there’s no danger of it not showing up on darker complexions, but it can easily be used and blended on even pale skin tones. I can see why this was a huge hit when it initially launched; I think we have a few options available nowadays, so it’s not the holy grail of corals for all any more.

The downside to this product is the wear time, which falls short of average on me, though about on par with other Mineralize Blushes/Skinfinishes. It has great pigmentation, though!

Dior Candide (457) Dior Addict Lipstick
Dior Candide (457) Dior Addict Lipstick

A Rather Candid Pop of Pink

Dior Candide (457) Dior Addict Lipstick ($31.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “pink.” It’s a light-medium pink with subtle yellow undertones and a shiny finish. MAC Vivid Imagination is more opaque, slightly brighter. Bobbi Brown Pink Orchid is a touch lighter. Guerlain Rose Piquant is similar. Chanel Charme is similar in color, a touch cooler, and more shimmery.

The Dior Addict Lipstick formula is creamy, balm-like, and lightweight; it slides on easily and deposits even color while you glide it across the lips.  This is actually one of the more pigmented shades from the range that I’ve experienced–it’s semi-sheer to semi-opaque as there’s a noticeable translucency that allows the natural lip color to come through.  As a result, those with redder natural lip color, this will look redder on you still, but the effect is lightening and brightening, even on my less pigmented lips.  Candide wore for three hours, and it was somewhat hydrating but not as hydrating as I’d expect.

Based on the claims, I would expect this to be a bit more hydrating than it was--it was just lightly moisturizing but it lasts mostly while it's on.

Dior Charmante (437) Dior Addict Lipstick
Dior Charmante (437) Dior Addict Lipstick

So Charmed to Wear You

Dior Charmante (437) Dior Addict Lipstick ($31.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “soft coral.” It’s a shiny, soft coral with strong peach/orange coloring. On my lips, which have some natural pinkness but are not overly red or pigmented, it enhances the natural pinkness and adds warmth, but it looks very, very natural–if you compare bare lips to the swatch photo, you’ll see a definite difference, but from afar, you wouldn’t go, “Oh, she’s wearing color!” Bobbi Brown Pink Seashell is paler. MAC Razzledazzler is more pigmented.

The Dior Addict Lipstick formula is supposed to be hydrating while adding a “veil” of color and “spectacular shine.” Charmante is sheer in color, though not invisible, but it may appear to have more or less color depending on the color and level of natural pigmentation your lips have.  It has a balm-like consistency–slick, creamy, and lightweight–that glides on readily and applies color fairly evenly.  It’s comfortable to wear, and it was lightly hydrating for the three hours it lasted on my lips.

Dior Mango (438) Nail Lacquer
Dior Mango (438) Nail Lacquer

A Ripe, Juicy Mango of a Polish

Dior Mango (438) Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described as a “deliciously fruity and radiant yellow.” It is a brightened tangerine orange with a cream finish. China Glaze Orange You Hot is darker, more orange. Zoya Arizona is more orange. China Glaze Papaya Punch is a darker orange. China Glaze Sun Worshipper is closest but brighter–almost neon.

The formula is a smidgen on the thicker side, so it takes a little longer to dry, and it’s best to let the first coat dry down before applying the second, as it has a tendency to pull/drag more so than other polishes.  The color coverage was mostly opaque after two coats, and it didn’t pool along the edges.  I typically get a week of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping.

Bright enough to be summery, but not so bright that it turns neon, it still dries down to a shiny finish without need for a top coat.

Bobbi Brown Black Pearl Shimmer Lip Gloss
Bobbi Brown Black Pearl Shimmer Lip Gloss

Bobbi Brown Black Pearl Shimmer Lip Gloss ($23.00 for 0.24 fl. oz.) is described as a “dusty mauve.” It’s a gray-tinged mauve with a hint of plumminess and pale mauve shimmer. What it does on my lips is darken the natural lip color, give it a cool-toned cast, and add a healthy dosage of pale mauve shimmer. Chanel Pleasing is warmer, less plum. Urban Decay Perversion is a bit darker.

This shade yielded semi-sheer color coverage, but it distinctly added/altered my natural lip color, and there was a lot of visible shimmer. The shimmer spread evenly across the lips, and it didn’t settle into lip lines. It has a very thin texture with a lightly tacky feel. The formula is vanilla-scented and comes with a doe-foot applicator. Black Pearl wore for three and a half hours on me, and it was neither drying nor hydrating.

It's an interesting color and an easy way to wear something a little vampy without wearing something too dramatic. It's like having a wearable version of more intimidating vampy lipsticks.

China Glaze Pure Joy Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Pure Joy Nail Lacquer

Does This Polish Contain Pure Joy?

China Glaze Pure Joy Nail Lacquer ($7.50 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “fiery red glitter with gold particles.” It has small, orange-toned red glitter and then larger champagne gold glitter particles, both suspended in a clear base. I don’t have a dupe for you, but hopefully, I’ll be able to ramp up the glitter nail polish swatch gallery sooner rather than later, so we’ll be able to find dupes going forward! Until then, I welcome any suggestions from you, dear reader!

I layered one coat over China Glaze Cranberry Splash for the majority of swatches, and then I also included a photo of two swatches of Pure Joy (on my thumb nail; it’s the last photo in the set) so you could also see it on its own. I always love a glitter that works for layering but also stands on its own–I think that’s really the holy grail of glitters.  There’s enough glitter in a single coat to work for layering, but it’s a polish best for layering as after two coats, there’s still a lot of visible nail coming through.  I liked that the consistency of this shade wasn’t too thick, almost thin by glitter polish standards, so it dried down quickly and didn’t pool along the sides.

It's not the most exciting/interesting holiday glitter from China Glaze's collection, but I did like the formula better than some of the others, as it wasn't too thick and dried down more quickly than others.
