China Glaze Blue Bells Ring Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Blue Bells Ring Nail Lacquer

Let Blue Bells Ring

China Glaze Blue Bells Ring Nail Lacquer ($7.50 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “icy blue shimmer.” It’s an electric cobalt blue with metallic shimmer and foil-like finish. The finish reminded me of Wet ‘n’ Wild Grew Up in Cobalt-imore a bit, but it’s bluer, less cool-toned. China Glaze Ride the Waves has a similar blue coloring, but it is a jelly-finish, so it looks very different. Zoya Song is much, much darker.

If every polish was like this, I’d own nothing but polish! It was fully opaque in one coat (and swatches are of one coat), dried down very quickly, and had a natural sheen (but not a glossy shine). The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it applied smoothly, evenly, and without streaking or bubbling.  I typically get a week of wear with China Glaze’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

I couldn't get over how flawless this applied and how rich the pigmentation was! It's so rare to find one-coat polish.

shu uemura Blackish Satin Purple Painting Liner
shu uemura Blackish Satin Purple Painting Liner

Try a Shimmering Eggplant Eyeliner with a Neutral Eye

shu uemura Blackish Satin Purple Painting Liner ($25.00 for 0.098 oz.) is a darkened eggplant purple with very fine purple and burgundy micro-shimmer. In pencil form, Urban Decay Crash and Urban Decay Rockstar are both similar. Bobbi Brown Black Plum is a bit darker. Maybelline Plum is a dead-on dupe.

It’s creamy and has good pigmentation, so a single pass of product (I used MAC’s 208 brush to apply) yielded mostly opaque color coverage without skipping or tugging.  When I tested it, the shade lasted eight hours without fading or migrating. It might seem a little intimidating, because it does have red in it, but there’s a lot of purple, some darkness, and that faint shimmer that makes it easier to wear than other red-toned purples.  I think it works particularly well with neutral eyes or to accent gold or copper eyeshadows.

Blackish Satin Purple is nicely pigmented, creamy, and long-wearing--all the desirable traits of a gel eyeliner delivered in one Mon Shu-decorated pot.

China Glaze Cranberry Splash Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Cranberry Splash Nail Lacquer

Your Fingertips Drenched in the Reddest Rubies

China Glaze Cranberry Splash Nail Lacquer ($7.50 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “ruby red shimmer.” It’s a rich, ruby-shimmered red that has almost metallic-like shimmer and subtle blue undertones.  Cult Nails Annalicious has larger shimmer and is a warmer red. Chanel Rouge Carat is very comparable. Nubar Pink Flame is a duochrome, so it sort of has a similar red, but it also has a flash of orange. Zoya Carrie Ann is a bit darker and has larger shimmer.

Oh, these kinds of reds always make my heart go pitter-patter.  In the bottle, I’m not swayed, but after the first coat is pulled across the nail? I’m swooning.  It’s bright but has depth, and the metallic ruby red shimmer flashes and dances underneath the light.  The polish was fully opaque after two coats, and the formula was trouble-free, as it applied evenly without streaking or bubbling.  There were some very minor brush strokes under very bright light that became visible (mostly around the edges).  I typically get a full week out of China Glaze’s formula with no chipping but minor tip wear.

The only downside is that there are some visible brush strokes under brighter light, but overall, it is a very pigmented, well-formulated polish.

MAC Nocturnal Instincts Mattene Lipstick
MAC Nocturnal Instincts Mattene Lipstick

Taste Temptation with Nocturnal Instincts and Seductive Intent

MAC Nocturnal Instincts Mattene Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “mid-toned greyed lavender.” It’s a pink-lavender with a semi-matte finish. There’s a definite gray tint to it, as it reads cool and a little neutral. It was opaque on the lips. MAC Budding Love is a little pinker. MAC Blooming Lovely is less pink and lighter. MAC I Like It Like That is pinker, more blue-based. MAC Dress It Up is pinker.

MAC Seductive Intent Mattene Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “vivid purple.” It’s a vibrant magenta purple with strong red undertones and a natural sheen. It had full color coverage when applied. MAC Heroine is just a touch darker. MAC Violetta is darker and has shimmer. I believe MAC Up the Amp is duller, less magenta.

Both shades were fully opaque on the lips, and they had a soft, creamy consistency that enabled great glide during application. They weren’t so creamy that they felt thick or moved around once on the lips. Mattenes tend to be longer-wearing, and Nocturnal Instincts wore well for five hours, while Seductive Intent lasted for six and a half and lightly stained. They are vanilla-scented but have no noticeable taste.

MAC Nocturnal Instincts and Seductive Intent Mattene Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

A
Creamy, rich in color, and long-wearing are apt ways to describe the Mattene formula. Mattenes are a great option for someone who finds a lot of matte lipsticks too drying or stiff to wear.

MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer
MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer

Is It Blue or Is It Purple?

MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark periwinkle.” It’s a bluish purple with a cream finish. At a glance, it’s indigo, and when you look more closely, there’s a definite, strong blueness to the color. SpaRitual blue Moon is a touch purpler and has shimmer. MAC Breezy Blue is similar. Deborah Lippmann I Know What Boys Like is bluer.

It’s one of two shades from MAC Taste Temptation. The other shade is still listed as “coming soon!” online, so I was not able to purchase it yet.  Blue Gaze was so easy to work with; I didn’t experience any streaking (which is something I experience more often than average with MAC’s formula), and the pigmentation was incredible.  It was mostly opaque after one coat, but I did use two for the swatches.  The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it flowed evenly across the nail and never pooled along the edges of the nail.  I typically get a week of wear out of MAC’s nail lacquer formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

P.S. — At a glance, would you call it blue… or purple? If you had to pick one?

China Glaze Escaping Reality Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Escaping Reality Nail Lacquer

Not So Keen on Winter? Escape Reality with Neon Pink

China Glaze Escaping Reality Nail Lacquer ($7.00 MSRP for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “neon raspberry pink.” It’s a vibrant medium-dark pink with a cream finish. There is definitely a neon element to the color, as it is very bright, and it has the signature quick dry down of neons and the semi-matte finish. China Glaze Love’s a Beach is very similar in color, but it has shimmer in it. NARS Anardana is darker, redder. MAC Girl About Town is a darker pink. Zoya Lolly is more matte and not quite as neon.

It’s fully opaque after two coats, and the formula was easy to work with.  It wasn’t too thick or too thin (consistent with China Glaze’s formula overall), provided even coverage, and flowed well across the nail without streaking or bubbling once on.  I typically get a week of wear with China Glaze’s formula with no chipping, just minor tip wear.
