NARS Valparaiso Pure Matte Lipstick
NARS Valparaiso Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS Spring 2012: Valparaiso Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS Valparaiso Pure Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “rich raspberry.” It’s a rich raspberry with a slight emphasis on the berry portion. It has a very slightly frosted sheen. The color provides full coverage in a single pass. Guerlain Nuit d’Amour is redder, less pink. MAC Red Dwarf is less red, pinker. MAC Rebel is more berry-like. Guerlain Bee is purpler. MAC Wild ‘Bout You is redder, less pink.

Pure Matte lipsticks are supposed to be long-wearing and opaque with a consistency that glides on and wears comfortably. They also contain wild mango butter to better hydrate lips. What’s nice about the formula is there enough creaminess for even application, easy glide, but not so much that it slips around the lips or causes bleeding or feathering. Valparaiso is definitely opaque in one pass, and it wore for six and a half hours for me and left behind a slight stain. It’s not the most moisturizing formula I’ve tried, but it’s definitely one of the more hydrating matte (or nearly matte) lipstick formulas. I’ve had the best luck with the darker shades in this range, while lighter ones tend to be a little less forgiving.

It's actually a surprising shade to see for spring! It does coordinate well with the eyeshadow trio NARS Has for spring, though! It has nice color payoff, long-wear, and feels comfortable on.

NARS Christina Lipstick
NARS Christina Lipstick

NARS Christina Lipstick

NARS Christina Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “shimmering golden raspberry.” It has a satin finish, so it’s supposed to be long-wearing, comfortable to wear, and moisturizing. It’s a pink-tinted red with golden shimmer and sheen. It yields opaque color coverage and a natural sheen. It’s a more frosted lipstick, but it didn’t feel clingy or drying, like some really frosty shades can be. NARS Petit Monstre is a less red, more orange variation. Bobbi Brown Raspberry Pink is much lighter in pink but has a similar golden shimmer.

Christina wore for five and a half hours, and it felt moisturizing; my lips still felt supple after I removed it. I didn’t have any feathering or bleeding issues with this shade, despite its deeper hue. It’s creamy enough to apply on the lips without dragging or pulling, but it doesn’t slip around afterward either. NARS lipsticks seem unscented and taste-free to me.

This shade should look gorgeous on any skin tone, from light to dark. It's rich and bold without being dark, heavy, or neon. It's also nice to see a golden sheen on a shade that's not full-on red or copper-red!

Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush
Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush

Tarina Tarantino Neopolitan Lane Dollskin Cheek Blush ($25.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “muted pink beige.” It’s a medium-dark fleshy beige; it’s very skin-like in its color, and it has a nearly matte finish. There is only a hint of rosiness; if you have pinker undertones, this might be more apparent on your skin than against my yellower undertones. It has more beige in it compared to MAC Brit Wit, which looks pinker compared to this. MAC Darkly My Dear is a few shades darker and browner. It is extremely similar to Tarte Exposed, though slightly less pink. Korres Natural is browner.

The powder is very finely-milled and soft to the touch. It applies smoothly and blends out effortlessly, and because of the naturalness of the color, it’s impossible to overdo. I love blushes in this color family, because they act as a my-cheeks-but-better kind of color. They merely accentuate and emphasize the natural tones of the skin. This lightness of this color means it works best on fair to medium skin tones, while medium-dark to dark may find it to disappear against their skin tone (blushes in this tone but several shades darker would work for the darker end of the spectrum). I was really pleased with the wear of this shade; eight hours without fading.

I highly recommend this for light to medium (possibly medium-dark) complexions as an easy, wearable, everyday kind of blush. It works well with dramatic looks as well as subtle, barely-there looks. Usually when I can't think of what blush to pair with the rest of my look, I reach for this kind of color.

Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner
Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner

Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner

Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep navy blue with a hint of indigo. It has a matte finish, and it has a fair amount of pigmentation in a single pass, but it builds up really easily and well. The texture is creamy without being slippery. It has a really dense feel and wears well on the lash line for ten hours or so (waterline is less, five to six hours). I couldn’t think of any dupes–a lot of my navy blue eyeliners are lighter or have shimmer, which tends to lighten the overall appearance.

Navy blue is an excellent alternative to black while still getting a really defined eye.  It can also add a pop of color without adding brightness to your favorite neutral look (which is my favorite way to wear it).  The matte base makes it more versatile, too, because you can smudge a shimmery eyeshadow to play with the finish and dimension of it.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil
Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencils

Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencils

Urban Decay will add four shades of 24/7 Concealer Pencils ($18.00 for 0.12 oz.) this spring to extend the shade range. I have to test out the formula, though I don’t make any guarantees when or if I will review (I’m more focused on clearing out the holiday backlog and then focusing on limited edition spring shades). Meanwhile, I thought I’d get swatches up! For shade descriptions, see this post. I suspect these will make their way online in the next couple of weeks.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil: Demolition, Perversion, Woodstock

Urban Decay will be adding three previously limited edition shades of 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencils ($19.00 for 0.04 oz.): Demolition (matte deepest darkest brown), Perversion (matte blackest carbon black), and Woodstock (bright fuchsia pink with silver micro glitter). I’m sure fans of the formula will be more than pleased to see such an ultra rich (and coveted) black made available year-round. No need to go easy any more!

  • Demolition is a dark brown with subtle amber warmth around the edges. This is a new and exclusive shade. Try CoverGirl Brown as a possible dupe.
  • Perversion is a really deep, dark black with a matte finish. It’s very creamy (more so than the majority of the 24/7 Pencils) but still works well.
  • Woodstock is a fuchsia-red pink with a satiny sheen and silver sparkle. The pigmentation was decent but not fully opaque in a single pass. It is buildable (see the larger swatch).

I’ve reviewed Urban Decay’s eyeliner formula many times in the past, including this past holiday season as they launched two holiday sets of pencils (which is where you’ll find all three of these). The all-day wear from these eyeliners is the obvious selling point, but I also really like the range of colors and that they’re just creamy enough to glide across the lash line without tugging but not so creamy that they smudge.  Both Demolition and Perversion apply like a dream, while Woodstock is sheerer than your average Urban Decay liner.

Which is your favorite?
