Chanel Malice Le Vernis Nail Lacquer
Chanel Malice Le Vernis Nail Lacquer

Chanel Malice Le Vernis Nail Lacquer ($26.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is a deep, dark red with ruby red shimmer. Guerlain Lou-Ling is similar in the base color, but it doesn’t have the same ruby shimmer. MAC Gadabout Girl is darker, no shimmer. MAC Vintage Vamp is browner and has no shimmer. Deborah Lippmann Single Ladies has a similar base color but is a cream. China Glaze Velvet Bow also is similar to the base color but doesn’t have any shimmer. Illamasqua Scarab is redder, warmer.

Malice is a stunner in person. It’s so rich and dark, but it doesn’t lose its color to black–it’s definitely a burgundy-red with a little wine-tint to it. Then there’s the ruby shimmer that catches light so well.  Chanel nailed this polish; the consistency was a dream to work with, as it flowed across the nail without pooling, streaky, or bubbling.  It wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it was fully opaque after two coats (one is almost enough).  It even had a slightly glossy shine to it naturally, though I’d still recommend a top coat to get the most out of this polish.  I typically get a week of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping with Chanel’s formula.

Sometimes Chanel does amazing color in their lacquer range, and sometimes, the formula isn't quite there; here, Chanel knocks it out of the park with a flawless formula, enchanting color, and a hue that is utterly perfect for the holidays.

MAC Whisper of Gilt Extra Dimension Skinfinish
MAC Whisper of Gilt Extra Dimension Skinfinish

Highlight with a Whisper of Gilt

MAC Whisper of Gilt Extra Dimension Skinfinish ($29.00 for 0.31 oz.) is described as a “light soft white gold with shimmery sheen.” It’s a lightly warmed-up champagne gold with yellow undertones and a very gilded sheen. Shimmery and high-shine, it’s not quite metallic (unless used damp/wet), the finish will highlight easily. Chanel Routes des Indes de Chanel is yellower. Guerlain Terracotta in the Sun is darker, yellower.

I reviewed Whisper of Gilt when it originally launched earlier this year in March. For a more in-depth review, I’d encourage you to read this post. I wanted to roll out improved photos, since I know this is a rather anticipated repromote. All of the photos and swatches are of the most recently released version (that came out with Glamour Daze), which is exactly the same as the originally released version. I also re-tested this shade for wear, and it wore for eight hours with some visible light fading along the edges.

If you love shimmery, high-shine highlighters, you'll like enjoy MAC's Extra Dimension Skinfinishes. They are comparable in formula to Estee Lauder's Illuminating Gelees as well.

Illamasqua Noble Nail Varnish
Illamasqua Noble Nail Varnish

Fall In Love: It’s the Noble Thing to Do

Illamasqua Noble Nail Varnish ($14.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “turquoise blue.” (Sephora has it listed as “robin egg blue.”) It’s a brightened, light-medium blue with a hint of turquoise in it, which gives it that robin’s egg blue hue. It has a cream finish with a naturally glossy shine. Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Faraway is bluer, darker, and has shimmer. SpaRitual Ebb & Flow is more turquoise. Deborah Lippmann On the Beach is bluer, less bright. Zoya Robyn is a smidgen darker, bluer.

Noble is a limited edition, U.S. exclusive shade.  It’s fully opaque after two coats (and mostly opaque after one).  The consistency was just slightly thicker than the usual for Illamasqua.  It didn’t pool along the sides or bubble during application, though, so it did not impede application.  The drying time was about average (maybe slightly faster), but it had a really glossy finish without need for a top coat (photos are without a top coat).  I typically see between seven and ten days of incredible wear with Illamasqua’s formula–the most minor of tip wear and no chipping.

SpaRitual Conglomerate Nail Lacquer
SpaRitual Conglomerate Nail Lacquer

Shimmer, Glitter, and Rock, Oh My!

SpaRitual Conglomerate Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “charcoal rock glitter infused with rhyolite.” This has a murky gray base with olive green shimmer and circular black and light gray flecks. It’s the mixture of shimmer and glitter that makes this unlike other polish I own. I don’t even know of what I could mix that would yield this result, even if I layered products. I’d love to hear any possible dupes if you’ve come across anything!

Conglomerate was opaque after two coats.  The consistency was slightly on the thicker side, but it wasn’t difficult to apply.  I didn’t experience any streaking, pooling, or bubbling during application.  You will want to be careful to maneuver any glitter particles off the free edge if any gets there.  I tested this particular shade for wear, and it lasted for a full seven days with very minor tip wear but no chipping.  I love SpaRitual’s rubberized handle; it’s comfortable to hold and easy to grip.

I love when I come across something unique! It can be hard to be innovative in the industry, so I appreciate it when I see something that I haven't seen half a dozen times before--especially when it works well!

Burberry Earthy Light Glow Natural Blush
Burberry Earthy Light Glow Natural Blush

Burberry Earthy Light Glow Natural Blush ($42.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a light-medium brown with subtle warm tan undertones. It has the barest sheen in its finish; not matte but not satin. Giorgio Armani #1 is similar but more beige. NARS Madly is darker, more orange. Burberry Russet is darker, redder. MAC Baby Don’t Go is lighter, less warm.

On my skin tone, Earthy is a light dusting of warmth and natural color; it’s a shade I can use as a light bronzer or as a contour. On lighter complexions, it could be used similarly, but it will be more noticeable as a blusher if desired. It will have a tendency to look invisible on darker complexions, because the color itself will be too similar to the natural pigmentation, but it might work as a finishing powder or as a highlighter on deeper skin tones. It doesn’t have an ashy base color, so it won’t look chalky on darker skin tones.

Burberry’s blush stands out for its incredibly soft, silky-smooth, and finely-milled texture.  It’s like crushed pearls to the touch.  It’s one of the softest blushes on the market, and it’s not even a smidgen powdery.  Those qualities enable it to apply beautifully and lay naturally against the skin.  It doesn’t look caked on no matter how much you apply, and it blends effortlessly.  It has good color payoff, but it’s buildable color, too.  Earthy lasted eight hours and had signs of fading after nine hours.

Earthy will be most versatile on light to medium complexions. I'd recommend Russet for darker complexions to get more out of their blush.

Guerlain Avarice Rouge G L'Extrait
Guerlain Avarice Rouge G L’Extrait

There’s Avarice in Your Heart

Guerlain Avarice Rouge G L’Extrait ($48.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as “beige.” It’s a warm rose with a hint of beige-brown in it. It’s neutral, but there’s a healthy dose of pink in the color. Again my complexion, it almost reads as a subdued coral. Cle de Peau Comtesse de Cayla is lighter and shimmery. MAC So Vain is lighter and pinker. Guerlain Jicky is similar but much sheerer. MAC Spice is browner. Guerlani Galante is darker, redder.

Rouge G L’Extrait is such an interesting formula, because it has a lot of the components of long-wearing, liquid lipstick, but it doesn’t have the same dry-down.  It clings, but it doesn’t develop a full on second-skin as do other products in the category.  As a result, it doesn’t flake away but wears away evenly over time.  The flaking is one of the problems with long-wearing, liquid lipstick, which can make reapplication difficult, as it needs to be fully removed before reapplying.  However, there is a trade-off:  this formula isn’t transfer-free or even transfer-resistant.  It certainly wouldn’t pass a kiss-test!  Avarice wore for a lengthy eight hours, and it’s hydrating both during and after it fades away.  It’s opaque in a single pass, and you’ll want to use less product than you’d expect, because you don’t need much for full coverage.

Intensely pigmented, ultra long-wearing, and there's no flaking of color despite it having a long-wearing, almost-second-skin texture, this is a great lip color formula for someone who wants their lip color to be on all day long.
