Make Up For Ever I922 Electric Purple Artist Shadow (Blush)
Make Up For Ever I922 Electric Purple Artist Shadow (Blush)

Make Up For Ever I922 Electric Purple Artist Shadow (Blush) ($21.00 for 0.08 oz.) is a vibrant, violet purple with cool, pink undertones and a satiny sheen. Ardency Inn Royal (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, cooler-toned. Urban Decay Urban (P) is slightly more shimmery, a touch darker. Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #5 (LE) is more muted. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory (DC, $8.25) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Of all the shades in Make Up For Ever’s massive (original) eyeshadow range, #92 was iconic. It was that bold, bright, deep purple with a matte finish that so many people had to have (myself included), so it was a real surprise to see how much they changed it in the new formula. I had asked specifically what shade replaced #92 in the new range, and the answer was consistently I922. The finish is obviously different, as the new one has a satiny, pearly sheen and the original had a matte finish. The original was also darker overall, so they’re not too similar in color or finish. I don’t remember if #92 was actually eye safe or not, but I922 is listed as a “Blush” rather than an eyeshadow, even though it is lumped with all of the eyeshadows.

It was intensely pigmented with a soft, lightly creamy (but it is more powder than cream) consistency that blends fairly easily on the skin. Applied with a lighter hand, it takes on a pinky-lavender coloring rather than the richer violet you see in the heavy swatch. As a blush, the color lasted for eight and a half hours before fading slightly.

It had good pigmentation, and while the texture was soft, silky, and blendable, it was on the powdery side. It applied decently over bare skin, but it’s the type of matte finish that would be best over a primer (or if you have oilier lids, it should be okay). On me, it lasted for eight hours before fading. Makeup Geek Barcelona Beach (P, $5.99) is more shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Unabashed Eyeshadow #2 (LE) is darker, cooler-toned. Givenchy Taupe Velours (5) (P, $23.00) is darker, cream. Charlotte Tilbury The Rock Chick Eyeshadow Quad
Charlotte Tilbury The Rock Chick Eyeshadow Quad

Charlotte Tilbury The Rock Chick Eyeshadow Quad ($52.00 for 0.18 oz.) includes four shades that range from beige to taupe to dark brown. Overall, it’s a decent to good set of shades, and I think it hinges on how much you love (or loathe) glitter, because the glittery shade does have fall out issues throughout wear. It’s pretty, but you will find glittery bits all over the face by the end of the day. The darker brown shade is buildable, but it could have been more pigmented. All four shades were easy to blend and apply to the lid, and they worked well together.

This brand has been available (along with this particular quad) for awhile in the UK, and I bought this from Selfridges, but it will be available stateside at Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom, Beautylish, NET-A-PORTER today, September 2nd.

The Rock Chick #1 is a light, gray-ish beige with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good color payoff that had a soft, buttery texture that was easy to apply and blend on the skin. The color lasted for nine hours before fading slightly. bareMinerals Air (P) is cooler-toned. LORAC Chrome (P) is darker. Clarins The Essentials #5 (LE) is darker. L’Oreal Iced Latte (P, $7.99) is warmer. Giorgio Armani Terra Sienna #2 (P) is darker. Dior Fairy Golds #1 (LE) is cooler-toned. Benefit RSVP (P, $10.00) is a cream product. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The Rock Chick #2 is a medium-dark, warm-toned taupe brown with a pearly sheen. It had excellent pigmentation and a soft, finely-milled consistency that worked well on the skin. I didn’t see any fading until after nine hours of wear. Tarte Cashmere Scarf (LE) is darker, warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Nude Dip #4 (LE) is darker, warmer, Make Up For Ever I550 Olive Gray (P, $21.00) is lighter. Chanel Tisse Rivoli #1 (P) is a touch darker. YSL Saharienne #4 (P) is warmer. LORAC Chrome (P) is a little lighter. Dior Pastel Fontanges #4 (LE) is less shimmery. Wet ‘n’ Wild Naked Truth #4 (P, $2.29) is warmer. MAC Silver Dawn (LE, $19.50) is warmer. Bobbi Brown Smokey Grey (LE, $21.00) is cooler-toned. bareMinerals Cheers (V2) (LE) is similar. Urban Decay Midnight Rodeo (P, $18.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The Rock Chick #3 is a glittering, warm-toned taupe with larger sparkle. The consistency had a slicker, almost wet-like, feel to it, while it was thinner yet still quite pigmented. Applied, the color itself wore well for eight and a half hours, but there was a moderate amount of fall out over time. bareMinerals Cheers (V2) (LE) is less glittery. Urban Decay Vaporize (LE, $18.00) is warmer. Urban Decay Derailed (LE, $18.00) is less glittery. Stila Substance (P)is less glittery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The Rock Chick #4 is a dark brown with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had decent color payoff, and the texture was soft, silky, but a smidgen powdery. It builds and layers well, but it’s not as pigmented as the other shades. Applied, the color lasted for eight hours before fading. Tarte Don’t Turn A-Brown (LE) is similar. Tarte Dream in Chocolate (LE) is darker. Laura Mercier Espresso (LE, $23.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty She Wolf #1 (LE) is similar. bareMinerals Boardroom (LE) is similar. theBalm Matt Ramirez (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC Dance in the Dark (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Diamond Dove (LE, $15.00) is warmer. bareMinerals Foreshadow (P) is similar. Inglot #329 (P, $6.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Zoya Remy, Sansa, Yuna Nail Lacquers
Zoya Remy, Sansa, Yuna Nail Lacquers

Zoya Remy Nail Lacquer ($9.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “indigo with copper and gold liquid metal.” It’s an inky, blackened navy blue with lighter blue and teal sparkle. It seems like the “copper and gold” turns into a lighter, bluish-teal with the blue polish over/mixed with it. This was so pigmented–it was pretty much opaque in one coat, but the swatches show two. It was slightly thin but not particularly problematic to apply. Marc Jacobs Beauty Blue Velvet (132) (P, $18.00) is lighter, brighter, smaller shimmer. Color Club First Looks (P) is darker, smaller shimmer. China Glaze Little Drummer Boy (LE, $7.50) is darker, smaller shimmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Zoya Samsa Nail Lacquer ($9.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “deepest eggplant with gold liquid metal.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned purple with gold and copper flecks of sparkle and shimmer. It had mostly opaque color coverage that went on evenly and dried down to a shiny finish. The consistency was a little thin, but it didn’t run to the edges, thankfully. Chanel Taboo (LE, $27.00) is darker, different colored shimmer. Cult Nails Spontaneous (DC, $12.00) is less shimmery, warmer. Cult Nails Enigmatic (LE, $12.00) is darker, less shimmery. Zoya Neeka (P, $9.00) is cooler-toned, less sparkly. Butter London Marrow (P, $15.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Zoya Yuna Nail Lacquer ($9.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “grey with copper and gold liquid metal.” It’s a dark gray with subtle warm undertones and a yellowed sparkle. It had very nearly opaque color coverage after two coats, and the consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin. China Glaze Concrete Catwalk (LE, $7.50) and Zoya Evvie (P, $9.00) have no shimmer, so they’re not very similar overall. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Diva Lipstick
MAC Diva Lipstick

MAC Diva Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as an “Intense reddish-burgundy [with a Matte finish].” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned deepened red with a slightly muted quality–it is a lighter and brighter burgundy to me–and has a semi-matte finish. NARS Charlotte (P, $32.00) is glossier, slightly redder. MAC Hearts Aflame (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC Studded Kiss (LE, $16.00) is slightly warmer. MAC Fixed on Drama (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. NARS 413 BLKR (LE, $26.00) is slightly warmer. NARS Amsterdam (P, $26.00) is similar. MAC Deeply Adored (LE, $16.00) is redder. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of questions asking whether such-and-such new shade was like MAC Diva, but I didn’t have it to compare to–now I do! I’d love to include more reviews of MAC’s permanent range, but with so many limited edition products, I try to use the time between launches to focus on other brands and products. Diva had rich, opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. The consistency was lightly creamy; just enough that it didn’t tug much on the lips, but it still retained its more matte finish. It’s one of the brand’s more comfortable mattes, and it lasts for six and a half hours while leaving behind a reddish stain. It didn’t dry out my lips, but I wouldn’t call it a hydrating formula either. As always, MAC’s lipsticks are vanilla scented but have no discernible taste.
