Yesterday, I introduced OCC Lip Tars ($12.50 each) to you. I showed you eleven shades of color — and what do you know? Last night they added two shades to their line up: Plum and Vintage! Lip Tars are made to be mixed and less so to be worn alone (especially the primary colors!), so I had a little mixology session last night where I made twelve different shades, just playing and experimenting with adding different amounts and shades together.

The best way to mix colors is to use small jars. I use clear, 5 gram sample jars that I’ve long since purchased from eBay. These come in handy for a variety of things – sampling out pigments, travel size containers for creams, cleansers, etc. They’re a good thing to have around the house.

Step 1: Squeeze out the colors and the amounts you think you’ll need into the sample jar.

Step 2: Take a toothpick (or a plastic spatula, if you have them!), and then mix vigorously. Make sure to swipe the sides to really get as much color mixed as you can.

Step 3: If it’s the color you’ve always dreamed of, then it’s done. If not, add more of a shade or another shade to change up the color.

Tricks I Learned

• If you’re really into mixing up your own lip colors, I highly suggest picking up two tubes of white. I found I used white quite a bit, relative to all of the other shades.
• Go easy on black. It really will darken up your lip color INSTANTLY. Like a little will do ya!
• Adding clear gloss seemed to add more “bulk” – stretched out the color, but it didn’t dilute it or sheer it out.
• Thinner application to lips results in a very satiny finish. A second or third layer adds more glossiness and feels more comfortable on lips to me.

Overall, I had some fun experimenting. I know some of you were concerned about having to mix up colors everyday and the like, but it doesn’t need to be. You can mix up colors every so often, and you can fill up your sample jar with that color. You’ll get plenty of uses out of it before you have to think about mixing it up again.

I do recommend using lip liner and a lip brush when applying Lip Tars during real application. (I didn’t use lip liner since these are swatches–quick and dirty–and I think it is important to show each one’s potential to bleed. For example, black bleeds the most, and all of them bleed more if you have a thicker coat on.) I took pictures of the mixing process, so as to not to overload the page, I’ll share four custom mixed shades at a time!

As promised, here are lip swatches of all of colored shades of Lip Tars. I will definitely do some mixing and matching later on today, and I’ll be sure to share the results!

To reiterate, the Lip Tars are designed to be mixed with each other! This means you don’t have to wear bright yellow all by itself — instead, get your creative juices flowing and start thinking about color theory and how to mix and blend colors to get your own custom shades.   I’ll definitely be trying my hand at it this afternoon, and I will keep you all posted on the results.

• Grandma is a beautiful shade of coral–it really doesn’t seem to lean either orange or pink or red. It’s exactly coral. I’m pretty excited to see what I can do with this color, since I adore coral glosses!
• Melange is a reddish-brown shade. It’s got some warmth to it, and it’s actually very wearable on its lonesome.
• Pageant is a bright fuchsia shade with just a bit of coolness in it. You can definitely wear this alone if you’re all about rocking a hot pink lip.
• Katricia is a rich violet purple. The same glossiness found in the other Lip Tars is also found in this shade as well. You can make this shade more wearable by adding red, hot pink, coral, or even a mixture of a few.
• Uber is a cool-toned brownish shade. It’s quite pigmented, and while I didn’t find it wearable on its own with my skin tone, deeper skin tones may find it suitable by itself.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (also known as OCC Makeup) recently launched a new product called Lip Tar ($12.50 each). The range includes twelve shades ranging from clear to white to black to yellow. The idea behind the Lip Tars is giving you the freedom to mix and match to design your own custom lip colors. Each color is extremely rich in pigment and color–no sheer glosses here–non-sticky in texture, smooth and glossy. There are eleven colored shades, which I’ll be covering – six in this post and five in a follow-up post. After both are posted, you can expect lip swatches of the shades by themselves. I’m going to get my mixology on a bit later, and of course, will share the results with you all!

• Feathered is an opaque white. There’s no way else to describe it! This is a shade designed to help lighten any lip color you’ve got going. If that hot pink combo is too bright, adding a bit of white will lighten it and turn it into a more wearable pink for you.
• Tarred is an ultra glossy black. It’s fairly opaque, though if you really wanted to rock a purely black lip, I’d definitely recommend using a black lipstick underneath. For a fun look, you could also wear a vibrant red lipstick and layer it with Tarred. You can use Tarred to help mute or darken colors.
• NSFW is a rich, glossy deep scarlet red. It’s insanely gorgeous by itself. Since it is a primary color, it can be used to create a good variety of different shades for customization, too.
• Traffic is a heart-stopping shade of bright warm-toned yellow. Not exactly a shade one would wear all the time by itself, but as a primary color, it is best when mixed with other shades.
• Rx is a vibrant sky blue. Again, a primary color, which makes it excellent for mixing and changing up a lip color.
• Safety Orange is an ultra pigmented orange-red with lots of glossiness. Surprisingly, it wears well alone, though to make it more wearable, add a bit of white and pink and see what you get!
