I’ll Take My Lip Tar Iced!

OCC Iced Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as an “opaque snow white frost.” It’s a bright white with a shimmered, silver-tinted metallic sheen. You’d think a shade like this I’d be dupe-less, but alas! MAC Metal Maven is more silver. MAC Bubbles is similar in color but because it is very sheer, it looks pinker as my natural lip color came through quite a bit.

Of the six new shades from Metallurgy, Iced was the only one I had some trouble with. Though it can be worn alone, it looks best when worn as a sheer layer. What I struggled with was unevenness when I went to wear it on its own. Using it as a sheer layer definitely makes it easier to achieve evenness, but I was able to get mostly even color that was more opaque after playing with it. The key with this one was to be really careful about how much was applied and pat it on in layers. This shade is also the most versatile for mixing, as it will lighten and add sheen to any other Lip Tar.  When I test drove this shade, it wore for seven hours well; after eight and a half, it needed retouching.

	I think it depends on how you intend to use it. To mix with other lip color, it works well. Worn on its own, it's not the easiest Lip Tar to use (or the best performing overall). Of similar shades, OCC's has been the best so far.

Have You Met My Electric Grandma?

OCC Electric Grandma Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “electrified true, classic coral.” It’s a brightened orange with tangerine shimmer and a slight pink tinge. Guerlain Orange Euphorique is more subdued. Chanel Sari d’Eau is darker. guerlain Gil is darker, redder. Guerlain Gipsy is darker and redder with less shimmer. MAC Vegas Volt is pinker.  I was actually surprised that I didn’t find anything more similar to this, but the brightness paired with the less-obvious orange-tones made it tough to dupe.

It applies fully opaque with very little product, and the consistency is smooth and looks that way on lips, while still giving off that metallic sheen it’s supposed to have.  When I wore this, it lasted eight hours–through afternoon coffee and dinner–and still looked 75% intact.

	Vibrant--electric even--with strong warm undertones and a golden shimmer-sheen, this color is very summery, but for those who long for summer, may this remind you of it when you're cozied up in front of the fire!

A More Wearable Lip Tar, But It Still Has Pizzazz!

OCC Authentic Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “full strength copper metallic.” It’s a rich orange-shimmered copper-brown with red-orange undertones. LUSH Vibrance has a similar orange shimmer, but the base color is less brown. MAC Look at Her! is more red-based. NYX Sparkling Beige is less orange, browner, and has more of a champagne sparkle.

Authentic is completely opaque and so, so smooth.  It has such a beautiful consistency that still yields that rich, metallic sheen that characterizes the latest launch of Lip Tars.  It’s warm-toned, but it has a very rusted tone, and it’s almost muted (but the metallic sheen means it will never play a background role!).  This is another shade that would work well to add a coppery shimmer/sheen to other shades, like reds.  I tested this yesterday, and it lasted eight hours, including dinner and tea (my nighttime drink).

	This shade embodies all that is beautiful about autumn--cozy fires and the changing colors of leaves--while being incredibly pigmented, long-wearing, and comfortable to wear.

A Bright, Metallic Pink to Steal the Show

OCC Yaoi Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “perfectly pink perlescence.” It’s a vibrant hot pink with blue undertones and a lighter pink shimmer-sheen. I thought it was a bit like OCC Nylon when I saw it in the tube, but it seems a bit darker, not quite as neon. Chanel Extatique is much more subdued. MAC Candy Yum Yum is cooler-toned, a bit brighter, and has no shimmer. MAC Quick Sizzle doesn’t have the shimmer, so it is a bit darker. MAC Show Orchid is them ost comparable, though it isn’t quite as vibrant and the shimmer is finer–less metallic. Milani Flashy is slightly lighter, but it has a similar finish–grittier, though.

This shade is bright and opaque with a shimmering, metallic finish. It has a lot of that sheen you’d expect in a gloss but with the lightweight feel of Lip Tar, which are really liquid lipsticks (with a vengeance). You definitely don’t want to over-apply these, because it will lose its metallic sheen if you put too much on. Like other Lip Tars, you don’t need much to get opaque color. The texture of this one is just a smidgen less-smooth than other Lip Tars–it’s really something you wouldn’t even notice if the others weren’t so smooth. I’ve been wearing this shade since just after six this morning, so we’re closing in on eight hours at the writing of the review–I ate breakfast as well as drank two cups of coffee, and it’s 90% intact.

P.S. — I have to perform wear tests for the remaining three shades, so I won’t have those reviews up until tomorrow and/or the next day

	If red isn't your thing, or you find it too warm-toned for your liking, Yaoi might be a better pick from the Metallurgy launch. It's cool-toned, still bright and metallic, and performs well.

So Red Hot, It’s (Super) NSFW

OCC Super NSFW Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “true red with a golden metallic flourish.” It’s a vibrant cherry red with golden shimmer, which gives it a warmer tone overall. The sheen is more noticeable from a normal viewing distance than up close. CoverGirl Burn is darker. CoverGirl Captivate is more berry. Dolce & Gabbana Ruby is more orange. Hourglass Siren is similar but glossier (it is a gloss!).

Richly pigmented, it yielded opaque color in very little product–if you’ve never used a Lip Tar before, I warn you use the smallest amount possible, like one or two millimeters of product squeezed out of the tube.  Lip Tars are best applied with a brush and because they can easily be over-applied, less rather than more, then layered if you need additional product.  This shade stained mildly after I removed it, but it wasn’t as prone to staining as I anticipated (better in my book, but it’s more of a personal preference).  I managed to squeeze in six hours of wear yesterday of this before needing to remove it, and it was still going strong at that point. Based on my experience with Lip Tars, I would say the color would have lasted another two to four hours easily.

	Excellent color coverage, and it's a very holiday-esque red that wears well without drying my lips out. It's just a little warm, so I think it would work on a variety of complexions.

OCC Triptych Lip Tar ($16.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “true 24K metallic gold.” It’s a molten honey gold with a metallic shimmer-sheen. Shocking, I’m sure, but I don’t have a dupe for this. Back in June, I reviewed Triptych in its Loose Colour Concentrate form (and it was amazing), and as a lip color–oh, la la! If you have that, you could try mixing it with clear gloss to achieve a similar color.

It’s mostly opaque, and it has a very lightweight feel once applied. As always, Lip Tars are best applied with a lip brush and with very, very little product. OCC says that you need even less of these than you do of the regular Lip Tars, as too much can minimize the metallic finish. There’s a light mint scent but no taste.As soon as these arrived yesterday, I ripped into the package and photographed straight away so I could get to testing them, as they are typically long-wearing, so I needed all the time I could get! This was the first shade I tested the wear of, and it wore brilliantly (there’s a pun in there somewhere)–just under eight hours.

	If you ever wanted full-on gold lips, Triptych has you covered! Not so sure about opaque gold? It also works well patted on top of your favorite berry and red lipsticks.
