NYX Rose Lipstick

NYX Rose Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is an ultra frosted rosy pink with lighter rose shimmer. This is one of the frostiest lipsticks I can remember trying. MAC Whirls & Twirls has a similar frost level, but it’s sheerer (and the colors do not compare). Revlon Carnation is pinker, darker. Rimmel Dizzy is pinker, less frosted. MAC Hot Gossip is warmer, lighter.

The color coverage is mostly opaque, but because of the high level of frost present in the formula, it is very dry and difficult to apply. It does not want to slide on, so the color deposits unevenly and the shimmer tends to look chunky. I found this particular shade to be drying when worn as well, which is a huge downside. It was hard to wear for the full four hours that it clung to lips, and afterward, I really had to race for the lip balm to rehydrate my lips!

	The formula of this shade needs help--if you apply balm underneath or have a hydrating gloss on top, it's workable, but it's not a pleasant shade to wear on its own.

NYX Pink Lyric Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a brightened magenta pink with cool, blue undertones. The finish is creamy with very minor settling into lip lines and opaque color coverage. MAC Pink Pigeon is a touch darker and brighter. MAC Love Forever is a touch darker and less pink (more purple). NARS Schiap is darker, pinker. Milani Rose Hip is pinker, brighter. MAC Florida looks similar.

This one has a lot of creaminess, but it doesn’t slip around as much as Stella or Haute Melon. The consistency allows for really smooth application with excellent color payoff. Pink Lyric applies smoothly, though, and it doesn’t slide around and slip over itself. When I trialed the wear of this shade, I was able to get four hours out of it, which is average for lipstick for me.  I really liked the natural sheen of the finish, because it gave lips a more luminous look.

	If you've been on the hunt for a bright, blue-based pink that won't break the bank, NYX Pink Lyric is a great option. There's a balance between brightness and level of color--it's not fully neon, but it'll still be the star of any look.

NYX Stella Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a creamy medium pink with yellow undertones. The finish has a natural sheen to it that gives it a nice luminosity, and the color coverage is mostly opaque. MAC Joie-de-Vivre is slightly yellower. MAC Hot Gossip is darker.

Like Haute Melon, there was a fair amount of slip in the creamy consistency of this particular shade that made it slide around during application. It was also easy to move around the applied product and get lines of color. Again, this shade didn’t wear for long, about three hours, when I typically average four hours of wear on a regular lipstick (not one touted as long-wearing). Mine didn’t have any scent, but other NYX lipsticks I’ve tried have almost been vanilla scented. I’ve had this for some time before opening it, though, so it’s possible the scent faded away over time (a lot of my budget-friendly lipsticks lose their scent very quickly).

	The yellow undertones are subtle but noticeable, so if blue-based pinks don't work for you, this might be an option. If you like the idea of a warmer pink but often find they're too warm, this may also be something to consider.

NYX Haute Melon Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a creamy semi-opaque coral with a natural shine. It looks more orange in the tube, but over my lips, it looks a bit lighter–almost pinker–due to the natural pinkness of my lips. There’s also a translucency to the color that lets the natural lip color peek through; it’s not really sheer, but it’s not typically opaque. It’s similar to NARS Niagara. Laura Mercier Tangerine is a touch more orange. MAC Crosswires is more orange. Lancome Chris & Tell is lighter. theBalm Strawberry is pinker. Bite Beauty Rose is more intense.

This shade had more slip than other shades I’ve tried within the range, so the color does slide around a bit, which can cause minor unevenness. It’s lightweight even though it’s creamy. I imagine that its shorter wear time of three hours may be due, at least in part, to the same slippery texture that gives it slight application issues. Mine didn’t have any scent, but other NYX lipsticks I’ve tried have almost been vanilla scented. 	If you're looking for a coral hue that doesn't lean too pink or too orange, you may find this works as a happy medium, especially if you prefer creamy, shimmer-free finishes!

NYX Fortune Cookie Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a shimmery bronzed beige. It appears much lighter and whiter on my lips–it’s a very, very frosted finish. The shade reminded me of MAC Pretty Please, which is a little pinker; MAC Tanarama, which is more golden; and MAC Bubbles, which is whiter and pinker.

This is not for someone who doesn’t LOVE their shimmer. It’s kind of like a really shimmered/frosted nude. There’s so much shimmer in this that it ends up looking almost opaque on the lips. I like it overall, and I think the effect looks nicer from afar; I’d recommend layering a gloss on top (maybe a red or plum) that’s more of a cream finish. Though it can be worn alone, it also works well as a layering product.

Because of the high level of frost, it is a bit drying compared to other shades I’ve tried within this range. It also wears away a little unevenly, but it does apply evenly from the get-go, which isn’t always true for extreme frost finishes. Mine has no detectable scent, though I know sometimes NYX’s lipsticks seem to be scented with something, but this has been waiting to be tested/reviewed for several months so it may have lost its scent over time (I find that more budget-friendly brands lose their fragrance much faster than higher-end brands). Fortune Cookie wore for about three hours.

	Not the most comfortable or best wearing lipstick from NYX's range, but you may find it a fun layering shade nonetheless. I think it would be great under creamy lipglosses!

NYX Chic Red Round Lipstick

NYX Chic Red Round Lipstick ($4.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a vibrant pink-red with strong blue undertones. It’s more vibrant compared to Guerlain Liu and just a touch more compared to MAC Prolong.  It’s a very cool-toned lipstick, which means it really makes teeth look white, and it will naturally flatter cooler complexions better. I find that the intensity of reds (along with plums, berries, etc.) make them appropriate on warmer complexions, too, because of how rich and deep in color they are. It’s opaque in color and a little goes a long way!

The finish is semi-matte, but it doesn’t feel dry when applied or even a couple of hours after wearing it, which is unexpected and much appreciated. This color does stain, but it also wears for six hours comfortably and feels a touch drying as it contiunues to wear to eight hours. I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding, though my lips are not prone to either generally. Mine didn’t have any noticeable scent, but I have had this particular shade in the to-review-bin for some time, so it may have lost it over time.

	It's not only a great shade of red with a quality formula, but it's extremely affordable at $4.00. I was really surprised at how comfortable this was over time, especially for something with such a semi-matte finish!
