It’s semi-opaque on lips (doesn’t quite cover my lip freckle entirely) with a glide-on consistency that’s just creamy enough to deposit an even layer of color but not so creamy that it feels thick or moves around easily. The formula is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and Beautiful Liar lasted five and a half hours on my lips. It was just a wee bit hydrating but definitely not drying. The lipstick was scent- and taste-free.
Now, the only “downside” is that this is a lot more pigmented than described. The hue is part of NARS’ Sheer Lipstick range, and while some shades are sheer and translucent as described, Beautiful Liar isn’t the only one that’s far more pigment-packed than you’d expect. So, for those who prefer more opaque lipsticks, you’re in luck. If you’re on the hunt for a sheer coral, you’ll want to keep looking.

This shade is part of NARS’ Sheer lipstick range, which is designed as sheer color with long-wear and has a hydrating formula. Mitzi is lightweight, sheer, and wears three and a half hours on me, which isn’t bad for such a sheer shade. This particular lipstick imparts more shimmer than actual color, so the more pigmented your lips are, the less you’ll notice your lip color changing, but you will see a soft, frosted sheen/shimmer on them instead. It was lightly hydrating but not a full-on moisturizing lipstick; after wearing it twice in a row, I needed lip balm an hour later. It is scent- and taste-free.

This shade is part of the Sheer Lipstick range, which is, not surprisingly, on the sheerer side. From my experience with the range, though, it’s more semi-sheer with translucency but not really barely-there color. That’s something personally appeals to me, but if you were actually seeking subtle color, they may still be too pigmented for you! It has a really great lightweight feel on the lips; thin with a natural glistening sheen.
Autumn Leaves delivers semi-opaque color coverage with that translucency NARS was talking about; you can see the natural lip color coming through. I wore Autumn Leaves earlier this week, and it wore exceptionally well–it lasted for six hours and felt hydrating the whole time. NARS lipsticks come in black, rubberized square tubes and are scent- and taste-free. They contain a little more than the average lipstick (0.12 oz. vs. 0.10 oz.).

It’s part of the Sheer lipstick family, so it’s designed to be “sheer, long-lasting” with a “sophisticated shine” and contains hydrating ingredients. It’s more semi-opaque than sheer, but there is a distinguishable translucency where you can see the natural lip color coming through. There’s also a glossy sheen in the finish. Falbala actually reminds me of a sheerer, more muted version of NARS Christina.
I really like NARS’ line of Sheer Lipsticks, though they tend to be more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than sheer. They have this really great lightweight feel that’s comfortable to wear, and they look almost like a stain–they sit very naturally against the lips. It’s scent- and taste-free–good news for those more sensitive to scents and tastes! Falbala wears just over five hours, while the glossy sheen does fade away after three to four hours. The only downside is that it’s not moisturizing (and it’s supposed to be), though it is not drying.

Vendanges is part of the Sheer Lipstick range, which is a formula that is supposed to be long-wearing with translucent color and “sophisticated shine.” The lipstick is scent- and taste-free (and no waxy scent either–it seems NARS has fixed any issues they had with that particular scent, because I haven’t come across one in a very long time). The consistency has just enough slip to yield that pretty shine in the finish as well as enables it to glide across the lips and deposit color evenly without being so slippery that it slides around.
This kind of sheer is lovely–there is a translucency that is apparent but there is still a healthy amount of color deposited. It’s a deeper shade that’s not too vampy, so it’s easy to wear and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. When I tested the wear of this shade yesterday, it wore well for four hours. My lips felt hydrated after wear, too, so the formula is on the moisturizing side.

NARS Flamenco Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “sheer candy apple red.” It’s a faded watermelon red. Milani Bing Cherry is a bit more vibrant and redder but similar. It is very close to Guerlain Grenade with less of a creamy finish.
It’s not really sheer–you can see my lip freckle peeking through, but it’s still hidden a fair amount. This lipstick’s color coverage is closer to semi-opaque, so it’s not the sheer it’s described as. It’s part of the Sheer Lipstick formula, which is designed to be sheer and long-wearing with a healthy shine in the finish. This is my only issue with the product; it’s great in every other way, and ultimately, whether it’s not sheer enough or just pigmented enough for you, is just part of your rationalization process.
For me, however, I have to look at what the product is supposed to do, because personally, I love more opaque lipstick, but this just shouldn’t be, since it should be sheer as described. While we often have pigmented products that are sheer, this is a sheer product that’s too pigmented! It’s not totally opaque, and there is some translucency to the finish, but if you’re wondering why the pigmentation score is low, now you’ll understand. Thankfully, the extended wear of this shade helps this shade bounce back.
The formula is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and surprisingly long-wearing for as sheer as some of the shades can be. The wear with Flamenco was six hours, which is great wear, though not entirely unexpected with the redness of the shade. While it’s not very moisturizing (and it does claim to be), it’s also not drying, and you can always tell just how bad a lipstick is if you only wear that for six hours! It stains ever-so-slightly after wearing for more than a couple of hours. I did not notice any scent or taste, which is such an improvement from NARS’ lipsticks a couple of years ago that had a very waxy scent. Flamenco should be flattering across skin tones; the pinkness will make it workable on cooler complexions while the red will be workable on warmer complexions.
