NARS Disco Inferno Nail Lacquer
NARS Disco Inferno Nail Lacquer

NARS Spring 2013: Disco Inferno

NARS Disco Inferno Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “iridescent silver green.” It’s a gray-tinged base with threads of silver shimmer. There is a very slight pink tinge when nails are angled, but it’s very subtle. MAC Ascension has finer shimmer and a stronger pink-purple duochrome. It looks a lot like Wet ‘n’ Wild Gray’s Anatomy, which seems to have more of a green tinge and finer shimmer.

Now, NARS has a whole section of shimmer shades, and some are specifically described as sheer, semi-sheer, or having a sheer base; but this one does not have that description at all. I’ve swatched a few of them myself, and they’re definitely not all sheer. This would be a really lovely semi-sheer shade so long as anyone buying it knew to expect it. Even after three coats, it’s not fully opaque.  It applied evenly, and there were barely-visible brush strokes (they really looked like threads of shimmer more than the typical brush strokes). The consistency was on the thinner side, but it wasn’t watery. The drying time seemed shorter than usual, and it dried down to a high shine finish.

As it stands, there is something about the way the shimmer/sparkle lies that looks almost like fairy dust caught in gray gossamer.  I personally like it, but it is definitely a semi-sheer polish after two coats and only semi-opaque after three coats, so hopefully knowing that will help you determine whether this is for you or not!  And if you’re in the camp that thinks it looks better in the bottle than on, I can understand that, too. :)

NARS TV Party Nail Lacquer

Where’s the Remote? It’s Time for a TV Party!

NARS TV Party Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “vivid orange.” It’s a medium-dark orange with a cream finish. It’s vibrant without being neon. Nails Inc. Porchester Place is a bit less orange, almost subdued in a way. Illamasqua Gamma is brighter. Zoya Jancyn is lighter. MAC Morange is darker and more red-toned.  It’s bright without being blindingly neon, and it’s not too dark.  It also doesn’t have strong red undertones, so it is a bit different than some other oranges I have in my stash.

TV Party was opaque in two coats, and it was a cinch to apply:  flowed evenly and fluidly across the nail without bubbling, streaking, or pooling at the edge of the nail.  The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it dried down faster than the average polish.  It even has a glossy shine in the dried finish, so a top coat could be optional.  I usually get a full week of wear or longer with NARS’ polishes–no chips, just very minor tip wear.

P.S. — Am I the only one who wanted to wear black and orange nails after seeing both shades in this collection?

Another solid polish by NARS--these are truly the highlight of the collection for me from what I have seen thus far--with excellent coverage and consistency.

NARS Superstar Nail Lacquer

Maybe Not Teal, But It’s Still Quite Nice

NARS Superstar Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “teal.” It’s a dark, smoky blue with just a hint of teal (which is more apparent in the bottle than on the nail) and a cream finish. Essie Go Overboard is quite similar, though I’d say it leans a bit closer to teal with less blue. MAC Deep Sea is darker and greener. Rescue Beauty Lounge Teal is darker and more teal.

It’s almost opaque in one coat, but you definitely need two for fully opaque color. The consistency is the right balance between thick and thin, so it yields good coverage and applies evenly without pooling along the edges of the nail. It dried down quickly and had a naturally glossy shine (swatches are without a top coat). I typically get a full week of wear with NARS’ formula with very minor tip wear and no chipping.

NARS 15 Minutes Nail Lacquer

A Pop of Spring in Your Holiday Line-Up

NARS 15 Minutes Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “lemon yellow.” It’s a slightly pastel sunshine yellow. MAC Near Beth Experience is much lighter. Rescue Beauty Lounge Yellow Fever is much darker. China Glaze Lemon Fizz is also much lighter. In the end, I couldn’t think of any dupes from previous shades I’ve reviewed.

This reads very springtime to me, though I can see why it’s a hue incorporated into this collection as a result of the collaboration with Andy Warhol.  Of all the five individually releasnig shades, 15 Minutes was the “worst” performing.  It is a bit streaky, and it did have a longer dry down time compared to the other four.  For a yellow, it’s rather good, though.  I think with a couple of practice applications, most of the streakiness can be dealt with. The color is opaque after two coats, though, and the formula doesn’t feel too thick, but it is on the slightly thicker side.  NARS’ polish typically wears well on me with very minor tip wear after seven days–some shades I’ve worn for as long as ten days.

It's a color I couldn't think of a dupe for, so that always counts for something, but the formula isn't perfect. It's particularly good given how difficult it is to find a good pastel yellow polish, though.

NARS Back Room Nail Lacquer

There’s One Last Polish in the Back Room!

NARS Back Room Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as “black.” It’s a rich, deep dark black with a glossy finish. I know it’s going to sound bizarre, but I don’t have a lot of black cream polishes. MAC Nocturnelle is one of the few I have (and for some reason, I have a few of them). It’s not quite as dark and doesn’t dry down to the same naturally glossy finish. MAC Beyond Jealous is a tiny bit teal but mostly black. What’s your favorite black cream?

love this polish.  You have to wait for it to dry to understand what makes this polish sing, and it actually dries down quickly, and when it does, there’s a beautiful glossy shine. It’s not necessary to apply a top coat if you’re looking to add shine.  The formula was just the right consistency, not being thin or watery, but not too thick either.  It was a cinch to apply the polish, as the fluid flowed across the nail evenly and smoothly. It was almost opaque in one coat, but I did need two for fully opaque color. NARS’ polish wears exceptionally well on me, lasting as long as ten days without chipping and only showing minor tip wear.

NARS New York Dolls Nail Lacquer

Be a Doll, Grab That Purple For Me!

NARS New York Dolls Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as ” purple.” It’s a dark purple with a subdued quality to it, so it doesn’t have a strong red undertone, and it seems just barely blue-based–but it’s so subtle and changes depending on the lighting conditions. Illamasqua Faux Pas is closest inc olor, but it is lighter and had a rubberized finish. Zoya Mira is lighter and more red-toned. SpaRitual Illume is lighter, bluer-based. Orly Purple Pleather is cooler-toned and has a rubberized finish.

This polish dries down pretty quickly, and the best part is it has a high-shine finish that’s glossy and reflective without need of a top coat at all (swatches show what it looks like with no top coat used). It’s almost opaque in a single coat (90%), so I still applied two swatches, but you could almost get away with just one.  The formula wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it flowed easily and evenly across the nail without pooling along the sides or streaking.  NARS’ polish wears exceptionally well on me, lasting as long as ten days without chipping and only showing minor tip wear.
