NARS Tolede Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “pink rose.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, rosy pink with a soft, satiny finish. Giorgio Armani Blush is warmer. Tom Ford Indian Rose is slightly more plum. Becca Valentina is more plum. Bobbi Brown nude Rose is darker. MAC Gem of Roses is a touch more plum.

The color payoff is mostly opaque with a very faint translucency. It had a lightly creamy, glide-on texture that applied evenly, smoothly, and didn’t pull or tug on the lips. Tolede lasted for four and a half hours, just above average, and was actually lightly hydrating during the time I wore it.  While several pieces from NARS’ summer collection are rather bright and bold, Tolede is a great everyday shade that I see working on many skin tones. I think it’s a bit of a sleeper–not as eye-catching as other products in the launch but something you may reach for often.

NARS Spring 2013: Dressed to Kill

NARS Dressed to Kill Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “fuchsia rose with gold shimmer.” It’s a subtly pink-tinged rosy-red with a dusting of gold sparkle. It’s just barely cool-toned; it almost reads neutral to neutral-warm against my warmer complexion. I suspect it will look a bit pinker against cooler complexions. shu uemura Rouge Luster is warmer. Giorgio Armani #406 is redder. Dior Nocturne is pinker, less red.

The texture of this is lightly creamy, and it glides on fairly easily and smoothly, but there is a noticeable texture from the gold sparkle. It provided full color coverage, and the color lasted six hours and left a pinky-berry stain behind for another hour or so. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating, but it was comfortable to wear for the entire time I wore it. I didn’t have any problems with the color feathering or bleeding. There was no distinguishable scent or flavor. If you like the idea of a muted, rosy red, you’ll like Dressed to Kill. It’s bright enough that it’s still a bolder color choice, but it’s not as bold or as bright as your traditional red.

NARS Afghan Red Lipstick

NARS Afghan Red Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.086 oz.) is described as a “garnet.” It’s a muted, medium-dark raspberry red with a subtle sheen. MAC Rebel is purpler and more intense. Guerlain Guet-Apens is lighter, less opaque. MAC Deliciously Forbidden is pinker. Milani Sexy Rose is frostier. Guerlain Bee is just slightly purpler. YSL Forbidden Burgundy is redder.

It is part of the satin finish range, which is supposed to be “a lustrous, long-wearing lipstick infused with conditioners to provide comfortable wear and sumptuously, silky color.” Afghan Red applies opaque with little product, and the texture is soft, lightly pliant, and barely creamy. It glides across the lips with nary a pull or a tug. The wear is good, though not as outstanding as some of the other reds by NARS; I get a solid five hours with some lingering color after six hours. It’s comfortable to wear, and it doesn’t cling as much to the lips as a true matte finish would. I found it marginally hydrating but no substitute for a good moisturizing gloss or balm, so it didn’t dry out lips or leave me fishing for gloss as soon as this wore off. It’s scent- and taste-free.

NARS Bilbao Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “shimmering topaz.” It’s a soft, shimmery dusty beige. Though it seems like there’s some sheerness when swatched, it’s rather opaque on lips. On my lips, it takes on more of a peachy-nude appearance with yellowy-gold shimmer. NARS Pago Pago seems a bit more orange. MAC Lush Amber is more orange. Clarins Rosewood is darker and has more rosiness in it. MAC Martha is darker. MAC Viva Glam V seems quite similar but has less of a golden sheen. Chanel Stunning is not quite as pink.

Bilbao wore for three and half hours well and lingered to four before needing a reapplication. It was comfortable to wear, without being drying (though not particularly hydrating), and felt lightweight. The consistency is creamy, so it glides across the lips easily without tugging or dragging. NARS’ lipsticks are scent- and taste-free.

	If you tend to find nude lipsticks to be too light, pale, or "corpse"-like, then you may find Bilbao worth checking out. It's a darker nude, but it's not brown, so it's wearable but never looks dated. Though don't be afraid of brown lipstick :)

NARS Casablanca Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “classic, full-bodied coral.” It has a satin finish (so it’s part of the Satin Lipstick formula), which is described as a “lustrous, long-wearing lipstick infused with conditioners to provide comfortable wear and sumptuously, silky color.” Casablanca is a softened tangerine orange with a natural shine and just about full color coverage. Chanel Sari Dore is more vibrant, while MAC Made to Order is glossier and has some shimmer in it. Bobbi Brown Soft Coral is lighter, while CoverGirl Delish is just slightly lighter.

NARS’ Satin lipsticks are creamier than some of the other formulas, though they’re not super creamy or soft. Because they’re not too creamy, they don’t apply too thickly either–you get a nice lightweight feel with your more opaque color. Casablanca wore for around five hours, and it almost stretched to six, but I felt it needed reapplication by the sixth hour. It’s not drying, but it’s not really moisturizing over the duration of wear. I didn’t detect any scent or taste.  As far as oranges go, this is a more wearable one, especially for cooler complexions, though it’s still warm-toned.

NARS Damage Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “sheer muted grape.” It’s a translucent raspberry pink with a subtle shine; it looks a bit like tinted lip balm than a lipstick, because it’s so weightless and merely tinted lips. The effect is very my-lips-but-better in the best way. There’s definitely a difference between my natural lip color and how they look with Damage on top, but it’s subtle and very natural. This would be an excellent every day shade as it is extremely wearable but it will also go well with many looks. MAC Laugh-a-lot is a bit less berry. MAC Capricious is a bit darker.

Damage is part of NARS’ Sheer Lipstick line-up, which is supposed to be sheer in color but long-lasting with shine and hydration. This shade wears three to four hours on me; it’s not the longest wearing lipstick on me, but it does outlast a lot of sheerer shades, as they often last two to three hours (and some even less). This lipstick was scent- and taste-free. I didn’t find it drying, and some NARS’ lipsticks can be, though this wasn’t particularly hydrating–kind of neutral.
