Once More with… Gaiety!

I reviewed this blush just seven months ago when it originally launched with NARS’ spring collection. This is mostly a summary and an update with newer, better quality photos along with the diffused flash/studio lighting for the full face photos along with an updated list of potential dupes (based on added product swatches).

NARS Gaiety Blush ($28.00 for 0.16 oz.) is described as a “bright candy pink.” It’s a cool-toned cotton candy pink with strong blue undertones and a mostly matte finish. I remember some readers inquiring about its similarity to NARS Desire, which I did not own previously, but now that I do, I can say that it’s far, far different–Desire is darker, richer, much more intense overall. MAC Full of Joy is lighter, more purple. MAC Peony Petal is darker, pinker. MAC Azalea Blossom is more purple. MAC Briar Rose is pinker.

Gaiety has a soft, touchable texture that’s finely-milled but not powdery. It delivers decent color payoff, but with it being a lighter color, it will take some layering to achieve true-to-pan color on medium to dark complexions. On lighter skin tones, it’s a very wearable pale pink with blue undertones–perfect for those with similarly cool undertones. I re-tested the wear, and it still wore well; a solid eight hours with very minimal fading along the edges.

5 Soft Pink Blushes to Try

Originally, I was going to pick five favorite pink blushes, but pink is such a popular blush hue that I thought it would be better to split it into two separate posts: one for softer, subtler pinks (think light to medium) and a second one for bolder, more fuchsia-like pinks. Thanks to reader Sirinthorn for today’s topic! These are designed to be truer pinks, but it’s on my list of posts-to-do for more of a neutral-pink-beige blush roundup

1. Bobbi Brown Nude Pink — blue-based light-medium pink
2. Burberry Peony — soft pink with yellow undertones
3. Chanel Pink Explosion — subtly cool-toned light-medium pink
4. NARS Gaiety — really cool-toned pink

NARS Spring 2012: Gaiety Blush

NARS Gaiety Blush ($28.00 for 0.16 oz.) is described as a “bright candy pink.” It’s a light-medium cotton candy pink; it has a strong blue base, so it reads cool-toned. It has decent to good color payoff, but it tends to need layering and building to achieve color if you are light-medium or darker. Compared to some of NARS’ other blushes, which may be considered hyper-pigmented, it is rather soft and you won’t need a light hand with it.  It has a natural matte finish, which means it doesn’t look totally flat but still looks mostly matte against the skin. MAC Azalea Blossom is darker and purpler. I don’t think I own NARS Desire, which seems like it may not be quite as cool-toned. NARS Angelika has less of a blue-base, is more of a medium pink, and includes sparkle.

The texture is very soft and finely-milled, and the lightness in color certainly saves it from looking too cool-toned against my skin tone, so I don’t think the blue-base would make it a no-go for warmer skin tones. It will definitely flatter cooler complexions, though. When I tested the wear of NARS’ newest blush, it wore for eight hours and looked fairly good at that point.

	This spring certainly has a theme: light pink blushes--and they tend to work best on light to light-medium skin tones. Though many of NARS' blushes, even their lighter shades, tend to be very, very pigmented, this one is not particularly intense. I would recommend medium-dark to dark skin tones check it out in store.
