Make Up For Ever #52L Aqua Eyes Liner ($19.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “blue-green sheen.” It’s a green-tinged teal with a little undertone of blue and a subtle pearled sheen. If you have Urban Decay Covet, this may be too similar; Covet is ever-so-slightly greener and darker, while Tarina Tarantino Spark of Envy (you can see me wearing it here) is very nearly a dupe for this (at a certain angle, #52L appears to have a slightly greener tone, but it’s hard to tell and would, personally, call them 100% dupes). MAC Minted is darker, greener. MAC Float on By is slightly lighter.
This is a new and limited edition shade for summer, which is a bummer, because it’s a truly gorgeous shade, and it’s no wonder–I’m obsessed with Tarina Tarantino’s Spark of Envy, so it was no surprise that the moment I applied this, I was all “Oooh, ahhh,” about the color, but for some, Make Up For Ever is more accessible and easier to purchase. It’s also a good alternative to the recently discontinued Covet by Urban Decay.
It had really good pigmentation in a single pass, and it was very easy to build it to fully opaque color in one and a half to two passes of the pencil across the lash line. The pencil glided on without tugging or pulling at the lash line, and it was a mix of waxy and creamy so it was easy to apply but still stayed put. It lasted nine hours well on my lash line without smudging.
If you love teal eyeliner, then you have to check this out (well, if you don't have the dupes, or if like me, you aspire to own all teal eyeliners). It had good color payoff, long-wear, and was easy to apply.

Make Up For Ever Gypsy Aqua Eyes Eyeliner ($18.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “matte dark brown.” Unlike a lot of Make Up For Ever products, it’s limited edition–and it has a name, not a number! The Aqua Eyes formula is supposed to be waterproof, smudge-proof, fade-proof, and provide intense color. I like the range for its durability, as it really does last all day for me, and the large variety of colors available.
The texture of Gypsy was soft, lightly creamy, and had a good waxiness that enabled it to glide across the lash line without tugging. Those with oilier eyelids sometimes prefer Aqua Eyes because of the drier texture, which somehow manages to stay on that fine line between creamy and dry. I’ve had excellent experiences with Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes formula; it doesn’t smudge, fade, or migrate during the day, and it wears a solid eight hours or longer on me.
This is a gorgeous, rich red-toned brown that's an excellent alternative to black eyeliner for everyday eyeliner. It works well on its own with a neutral eye or anchor a more intense look.

Make Up For Ever #9L Aqua Eyes Liner ($17.00) is a pale gold with a high sheen. While it does have shimmer, it doesn’t look like it–much more like a sheen. It’s a nice shade to use in conjunction with blues, browns, greens, and teals. I don’t have a liner quite this color from other brands, because it’s not quite a true gold–it’s more like a golden yellow, where it looks more yellow than gold. It’s much paler, lighter, and yellower in comparison to Urban Decay’s Honey Liner.
I love the Aqua Eyes formula because it really does what it’s supposed to! It’s a long-wearing eyeliner that’s waterproof that won’t migrate to anywhere you didn’t apply it. You can smudge it if you want, but it’ll set after a few minutes and stay put. I also like that they have such a wide shade range available (25 colors available on Sephora!), because who doesn’t want to collect them all? (And I know some of you have the Aqua Eyes Collector Set… I’m totally jealous!)
The only thing I could think of to improve the formula is to make it just the tiniest bit creamier. They’re not stiff or hard on the eyes at all, but I’ve found that I definitely prefer more of the ultra glide-on creaminess of liners like Urban Decay. I keep my Urban Decay and Make Up For Ever eyeliners separate from all my other eyeliners–and I’m constantly reaching for one of the two!
