MAC Fall Colour: Lipsticks

MAC Fall Colour Lipsticks ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) includes eight (yes, eight!) shades: Fleshpot (pale muted pinky beige), Fusion Pink (bright coral), Neon Orange (bright clean orange), Plum Bright (purple), Ruby Woo (vivid bluish-red), Show Orchid (vivid hot pink), Violetta (bright clean violet purple), and X-S (dirty red chestnut). These are part of the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and rolls out internationally in October. Plum Bright is the only new and limited edition shade, while X-S used to be permanent, I believe it was discontinued (I have old, old swatches of it but it’s not listed online any more). Ruby Woo is permanent at all MAC locations, and the other shades are permanent at PRO stores.

• Fleshpot is a pale, beige nude with just a hint of pink. It has a satin finish, so it has a creamier feel and appearance with opaque color coverage. This shade is similar to NARS Madere, MAC Supremely Confident, and MAC Happy Hibiscus.
• Fusion Pink is a bright red-coral with a fuchsia sheen. It has an amplified finish, so it is creamier and more opaque but still has a shine. Make Up For Ever #37 is more coral. MAC Insanely It is pinker, as is NARS Funny Face.
• Neon Orange is a bright, medium-dark orange with an amplified finish. It’s creamy and opaque. There are a fair amount of dupes for this shade in the gallery, among them: MAC Good to Go, Clarins Clementine, and MAC Morange.
• Plum Bright is a reddish plum-purple with semi-opaque color coverage and a glossy shine. The information I have lists it as a satin, but it feels like a lustre or glaze (and looks like it, too). It has a lot of slip and less color payoff than a satin and lacks the overall creamy texture. My tube is a sample and doesn’t have final labeling, so I can’t confirm either way. MAC Bust Out is lighter and purpler. It’s less red compared to Thierry Mugler Dream and MAC Riveting Rose.
• Ruby Woo is a blue-based red with a matte finish and nearly opaque color coverage. It’s one of the driest lipsticks I’ve ever used; it’s kind of my benchmark for dry, actually. It does pull and drag a bit, but it wears like a champ (but it’s drying after four or five hours of wear). It is similar to a lot of other blue-based reds.
• Show Orchid is a vibrant fuchsia-pink with fuchsia-purple iridescence. It has mostly opaque color coverage and an amplified finish. NARS Schiap is pinker and doesn’t have the fuchsia sheen.
• Violetta is a reddened violet purple with soft shimmer. It has most opaque color coverage and an amplified finish. I can’t think of a dupe for this shade.
• X-S will be reviewed when I am able to purchase it!

This set of lipsticks includes a lot of my personal favorites. Most of these shades are rich in color, comfortable to wear, and wear on the longer side (because they’re more intense, so they’re more apt to stain, while the finishes are creamier so they cling to lips). MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented, and I typically get three to six hours of wear from them. With amplified and satin finishes, I tend to get four to five, though shades like Ruby Woo are so dry and matte that they wear closer to six.

For the record, I’d like to state that releasing eight lipsticks in a full color collection this one is borderline ridiculous!

Look:  MAC Venomous Villains – Maleficent

I used all of the mineralize eyeshadows wet, and these photos were taken at least a half hour after applying (do you know how terrible I am at applying lashes?!), so the color stayed quite vibrant well after they dried.  I went for a greasepaint stick as a base, as I felt like it might be a little tacky and keep fall out to a minimum (true!).  Half lashes look so wonky so close-up – because you can see clearly where the lash ends and the natural lash begins, but at a normal viewing distance, I think they worked really well.  More drama but not the heaviness of a full lash!

And yeah, I paired bold eyes with bold lips.  Don’t you think that’s what Maleficent would have done?

For eyes, start by applying French Quarter greasepaint stick as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249.  Spritz the 239 brush with a little water, and then pick up the emerald green side of She Who Dares and apply to the inner third of the lid.  Repeat but apply the blackened purple side of My Dark Magic to the outer two-thirds of the lid.  With the 272, lightly spritz with water, and then apply the violet-blue side of My Dark Magic into the crease, gently blending upwards.  Blend Trench eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone.  Line the upper lash line with Nocturnal liquid liner and lower lash line with Graffiti liner.  Apply Hello Kitty Lashes on the outer half of each eye.  Finish by sweeping Inimitable Intense mascara on lashes.

For cheeks, apply Briar Rose Beauty powder on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Violetta lipstick first, and then layer Revenge is Sweet lipglass for a complementing lip.

Quick Neutrals with Urban Decay’s Naked Palette

This is a really quick and dirty look I did a couple of weeks ago before an early 8 am class.

You will need the following…

• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
• Cheeks: Benefit Sugarbomb Blush (pinky peach)
• Lips: MAC Violetta Lipstick (fuchsia purple), MAC Revenge is Sweet Lipglass (sheer jelly pink)
• Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: Revenge is Sweet = Full For You

MAC Disney Venomous Villains Collection: Maleficent Review, Photos, Swatches

As we continue on, we move to Maleficent‘s (from Sleepy Beauty) “collection,” which includes two mineralize eyeshadow duos, two lipsticks, two lipglasses, one beauty powder, and three nail lacquers.

All of the character images are stamped on the products; they are not stickers. You can find official promotional imagery and color descriptions here. The collection launches on September 30th, 2010 at all MAC locations, October 2010 internationally, and approximately September 28th for online. You may also want to check your local store to see if they are holding an unveiling/preview party for the collection.

Lipglass ($15.50 U.S. / $18.50 CDN)

• Revenge is Sweet is a sheer, jelly-ish medium pink with fuchsia micro-shimmer. It has a very wet look to it but seems to settle into lip lines.
• Wrong Spell is a semi-sheer, burnt burgundy with pinky-plum and copper shimmer. I thought Liqueur was similar, but it’s much, much lighter and bronze, not burgundy.

Lipstick ($15.50 U.S. / $18.50 CDN)

• Violetta is a brightened fuchsia-violet with an amplified finish. This is a PRO color.
• Dark Deed is a darkened blood red with blackish-brown with an amplified finish. It’s a ever-so-slightly redder version of Media (but they are very close), and Dark Deed has a wetter/glossier finish.

Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo ($21.00 U.S. / $25.00 CDN)

• My Dark Magic is a duo that features a blackened purple with a frosty finish and a violet-tinged blue with a navy-black base. Young Punk (Style Black) has a stronger black base with more of a glittery finish than the shimmer finish of this product.
• She Who Dares is a combination of a darkened navy-black base with medium-dark blue shimmer and a dirty green and gold shimmered over a blackened, forest green base. The blue side does resemble Blue Flame (Style Black) with the finish being smoother in this product.

Beauty Powder ($25.00 U.S. / $30.00 CDN)

• Briar Rose is a cool-toned, blue-based medium pink. It’s kind of like a bubblegum pink to me–like perhaps Snob lipstick in blush form. It is also reminiscent of a less purple, less cool version of Pink Swoon–perhaps if Pink Swoon and Well-Dressed had a baby. It does apply rather sheerly, though it can be built up.

Nail Lacquer ($13.00 U.S. / $15.50 CDN)

• Bad Fairy is a stunning shade of duochrome polish that’s both ruby red, molten lava copper, and gold, depending on how the light hits it.
• Formidable! shimmers teal, blue, violet, and reddened purple, depending on the light. It is, however, a dead-on dupe for ORLY Galaxy Girl.  There is nothing that I can distinguish as different between the two brands–formula feels the same, it wears the same.  MAC may take just a minute longer to dry.
• Mean & Green flashes burgundy, green, and gold and is totally full of shimmer. It is a dead-on dupe for ORLY Space Cadet.

The Summer Season: MAC Violetta Lipstick

MAC Violetta Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a red-based violet purple with a glossy sheen. It has an amplified creme finish and a permanent PRO shade (which does, occasionally, make an appearance on maccosmetics.com as part of seasonal trend reports). It has a very reddish-purple base with more of a true violet iridescent/overlay, but it looks cohesive once applied. Personally, I don’t wear Violetta on its own, but I love pairing it with iridescent or milky pinks as well as fuchsias to brighten it.

MAC Violetta Lipstick

I was watching Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance Music Video yesterday, and I felt a little inspired by the bold makeup she’s wearing around the four minute mark. At first, I thought she was wearing this look while dancing a bit, but I think the looks are different–the one she wears while dancing (also around the four minute mark) seems cleaner, not quite as dark, though the lips seem really similar.

Anyway, this is inspired by and not so much as an exact replica. If you wanted to be more on target, I’d say to go for a slightly messier smoky eye, add a little bit of gloss to make it look wet and have a sheen, and then go for a very dramatic cheek contour. The shape of the black portion on the eye also goes up quite close to the inner brow bone and then comes down.  The lashes should also be bigger and flair out more on the outer lash line.

Also, this look is actually REALLY easy. No, seriously! It’s pretty much any cream black base all over the lid. I used the same technique I did back in 2007 to create this black smoky eye tutorial. The lashes took me infinitely longer and still didn’t adhere correctly–but it was good enough to fake it in photos (and my eyes were burning from upper lash line irritation, so it was a hurry-up-and-finish situation).

You will need the following…

• Eyes: Blacktrack fluidline (black), Carbon eyeshadow (matte black), Vex eyeshadow (duochrome white-purple), Bisque eyeshadow (matte highlighter), Feline kohl power (black), false eyelashes (anything big and dramatic), Zoom Fast Black Mascara (black)
• Cheeks: Sculpt sculpting powder (dark shadow), Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer (bronzy highlighter)
• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (#140)
• Lips: Red No. 5 lipstick (deep red), Violetta lipstick (bright purple), Vino lip pencil (dark red)
• Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: Red No. 5 = New York Apple

Directions: Apply Blacktrack fluidline all over the lid as the base with the 249. With the 239, pack Carbon eyeshadow on all over the lid. Using the 226 brush, lightly blend the crease with Vex eyeshadow. Sweep Bisque eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Feline Kohl Power on lower lash line, and apply false lashes to upper lash line, then lightly apply Zoom Fast Black mascara on lashes. Sweep hollows of cheeks with Sculpt sculpting powder using the 168, then highlight with Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 165. Apply Red No. 5 lipstick to lips, and then top with Violetta for color and shine.
