Taste Temptation with Nocturnal Instincts and Seductive Intent

MAC Nocturnal Instincts Mattene Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “mid-toned greyed lavender.” It’s a pink-lavender with a semi-matte finish. There’s a definite gray tint to it, as it reads cool and a little neutral. It was opaque on the lips. MAC Budding Love is a little pinker. MAC Blooming Lovely is less pink and lighter. MAC I Like It Like That is pinker, more blue-based. MAC Dress It Up is pinker.

MAC Seductive Intent Mattene Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “vivid purple.” It’s a vibrant magenta purple with strong red undertones and a natural sheen. It had full color coverage when applied. MAC Heroine is just a touch darker. MAC Violetta is darker and has shimmer. I believe MAC Up the Amp is duller, less magenta.

Both shades were fully opaque on the lips, and they had a soft, creamy consistency that enabled great glide during application. They weren’t so creamy that they felt thick or moved around once on the lips. Mattenes tend to be longer-wearing, and Nocturnal Instincts wore well for five hours, while Seductive Intent lasted for six and a half and lightly stained. They are vanilla-scented but have no noticeable taste.

Is It Blue or Is It Purple?

MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark periwinkle.” It’s a bluish purple with a cream finish. At a glance, it’s indigo, and when you look more closely, there’s a definite, strong blueness to the color. SpaRitual blue Moon is a touch purpler and has shimmer. MAC Breezy Blue is similar. Deborah Lippmann I Know What Boys Like is bluer.

It’s one of two shades from MAC Taste Temptation. The other shade is still listed as “coming soon!” online, so I was not able to purchase it yet.  Blue Gaze was so easy to work with; I didn’t experience any streaking (which is something I experience more often than average with MAC’s formula), and the pigmentation was incredible.  It was mostly opaque after one coat, but I did use two for the swatches.  The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it flowed evenly across the nail and never pooled along the edges of the nail.  I typically get a week of wear out of MAC’s nail lacquer formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

P.S. — At a glance, would you call it blue… or purple? If you had to pick one?

Perk Up Your Winter with MAC’s New Lipgloss

MAC Perky Lipglass ($15.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone shimmering lilac.” It’s a light-medium lilac purple with lighter lilac and multi-colored shimmer. On my lips, it adds a light lavender color but it’s the multitude of shimmer that really stands out. MAC Docile is lighter, less shimmery. MAC Gone Romancin’ is lighter and more tinted. MAC Frozen Dream has less shimmer.

This is the third gloss from MAC’s Taste Temptation Collection, which launched online this week and will hit stores and counters this Thursday.  It’s a semi-sheer gloss that adds a lot of shimmer, as the base color is fairly sheer.  The base color lightens my natural lip color with a light milkiness that’s tinted lilac. Lipglass is one of those formulas that runs from sheer to opaque and everything in-between. The consistency was a little thinner than the average Lipglass, though it was still tacky.  It was also vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.  This shade lasted three and a half hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating.

	The multi-colored shimmer makes it a great layering shade, and because there is so much shimmer, it can be worn on its own and doesn't look like just any ol' sheer gloss with shimmer.

Passionately Tempted May Be More Conventional Than You Thought

MAC Night Blooming Mattene Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone blue pink.” It’s a vibrant magenta pink with strong, cool blue undertones and a satin-matte finish. MAC Outrageously Fun is less vibrant, pinker. Le Metier de Beaute Paris is darker, pinker. MAC Dear Diary is more vibrant. MAC Candy Yum Yum is cooler-toned. MAC Pink Pigeon is a touch lighter. MAC Love Forever is lighter, more muted.

It’s rich in color and applies with opaque color coverage. The texture is creamy and glides on easily. The finish is satiny initially, but after an hour or two, it becomes mostly matte. This particular shade did stain my lips (which you may or may not appreciate), and it lasted for six and a half hours plus had a lingering stain for another hour or so.  It is vanilla-scented, and while creamy, it was not too thick or heavy worn.  There are two other shades of Mattenes coming out with this collection, which I’ll review when I’m able to purchase them.

MAC Passionately Tempted Blush ($20.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone magenta” with a satin finish. It’s a reddish plum with a barely-there sheen. MAC Restores Dazzle is redder. MAC Vintage Grape is more plum, more muted. MAC Magenta is redder, more vibrant.

The pigmentation is incredibly rich and intense, but the biggest drawback is how dry the texture is, because it makes blending much more difficult. The blush applied unevenly and looked splotchy when I used MAC’s 116 brush (very lightly!), and I had to use my foundation brush (with excess liquid foundation on it) to buff around the edges, because it wasn’t evening out easily. It wore for eight hours with minor fading along the edges.  Excellent color payoff is typically a desirable trait, but in a blush, it is imperative that it is also blendable, and that is where this blush falls short.

Unconventional May Be More Conventional Than You Thought

MAC Unconventional Blush ($20.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “pale shimmering lavender” with a frost finish. It’s a pale pink with a hint of lavender and cool under-tones; there is an almost gray pull to the color that gives it a very cool, muted appearance. For a blush listed as a frost, it is softer, more shimmer-sheen than full of shimmer; more like a mix of frost and satin. MAC Lazy Sunday is warmer, pinker. MAC Full of Joy is a touch more lavender and less frosted–but the two are very similar. Make Up For Ever Smooth Talker is a touch pinker and less shimmery.

What was really noteworthy about this blush is that despite its light and cool coloring, it didn’t turn ashy against my medium complexion as some shades in this family are prone to doing. On my complexion, it ended up looking like a cool-toned pink highlighter–so a little shimmer, sheen, and a touch of color.  It had excellent color payoff and was very finely-milled, soft, and smooth to the touch and when applied.  It blended out beautifully.  The texture and application were both some of the best I’ve seen from MAC.  The blush wore for seven and a half hours well with some light but noticeable fading after eight hours.
