Why Aren’t Mattenes Permanent?

MAC Styleseeker Mattene Lipsticks ($15.00 for 0.08 oz.) includes five shades: Camden Chic (rich brick red), Delectable (orange-beige), Eden Rouge (bright blue-red), Fashion Nomad (bright red orange), and Fun Finds (light nude pink). All five shades are limited edition.

Camden Chic is a brown-red with a natural sheen. The color is opaque on. NARS Amsterdam has less brown in it. MAC Extended Play is more red than brown. MAC Unknown Pleasures is several shades darker, less brown. MAC Legendary is a smidgen darker. Shiseido Mystery is very comparable.
Delectable is a peachy orange with opaque color and a natural sheen. This shade, while still creamy, was a bit less forgiving on the lips. MAC Peachstock is lighter, less orange, more beige. Bobbi Brown Bare Pink is more beige. Cle de Peau Calliope is similar but not quite as orange.
Eden Rouge is a blue-based medium bright red with opaque color coveage and a natural sheen. Edward Bess Midnight Bloom is very similar. MAC Red Racer is similar, not quite as bright. CoverGirl Hot is also close. MAC Russian Red is a bit darker.
Fashion Nomad is a bright medium-dark orange with red undertones. The color coverage is opaque, even, and finishes with a natural sheen. We have seen this color over and over again by MAC. MAC Morange is similar–perhaps jsut a smidgen darker. MAC Booyah!!! is a bit more subdued. MAC Good to Go is close. MAC Neon Orange is also similar. Illamasqua Flare is more matte but close in color.
Fun Finds is a pale pink-beige with a mostly matte finish. This was the least creamy of the five, and it was definitely the least forgiving. It tended to emphasize any imperfections on the lips (and I actually swatched this first out of the Mattenes–I go light to dark if there are any potentially staining shades, like Eden Rouge, in the line-up). MAC Ruffian Naked is pretty similar, perhaps a little more gray-toned. MAC Myth is a bit pinker. MAC Innocence, Beware! is lighter, less pink.

Mattenes are supposed to deliver rich color, semi-matte finishes, and be hydrating and creamy to apply while still maintaining that semi-matte finish. These are very creamy; they glide-on and yield opaque color coverage in a single stroke–and even color at that. Delectable and Fun Finds were the two shades that didn’t look really nice on; I think it’s the lighter color combined with the matte formula that makes it harder to really nails these types of colors–they just tend to be less forgivingo n the lips and accentuate the natural texture of my lips. None of the five shades are particularly unique, though I liked the overall feel and look of Camden Chic, Eden Rouge, and Fashion Nomad (this one being the most dupeable).

Because Delectable and Eden Rouge have both been released previously, I tested those recently using the previous iterations I had, though the swatches and photos are of the most recent release. Camden Chic wore for five hours, Delectable wore for four, Eden Rouge for six, Fashion Nomad for five, and Fun Finds for four. While three were somewhat hydrating, Delectable and Fun Finds were just a little drying. These are vanilla-scented and come in slim matte black tubes and contain just a bit less product than regular MAC lipsticks (0.08 oz. vs. 0.10 oz.).

Surprise! Three Fantastic Opaque Lipglasses

MAC Styleseeker Lipglasses ($15.00 for 0.17 oz.) includes four shades: C-Thru (peachy beige with shimmer), Eclectic Edge (mid-tone clean true orange), Ready to Roam (mid-tone true blue red), and Restless (dark burnt bronze).

C-Thru has been reviewed C-Thru previously, and it is part of the original range.

Eclectic Edge is a medium orange with soft white micro-shimmer. It has a hint of red tones, but it’s mostly tangerine orange. It’s not too bright, but it’s no faded shade! The color coverage is mostly opaque, and it applies nice and evenly. MAC Riviera Life is similar but appears just barely darker. MAC Morange is darker, more orange, brighter.

Ready to Roam is a blue-based medium red with ruby red micro-shimmer–the shimmer is so subtle, I didn’t know there was shimmer until I applied it to my lips and saw it while editing photos! It’s there, and you’ll see it, but it’s subtle. This is mostly opaque and applies evenly and smoothly. Chanel Triomphal is darker with pink shimmer. MAC Driven by Love is darker but similar. MAC Totally Fab is lighter, less opaque. MAC Send Me Sailing has more blue in its base and has no shimmer. MAC Russian Red is very similar but has no shimmer.

Restless is a reddish-brown with copper and bronze shimmer–this one is shimmer-heavy. The color is semi-opaque but still applied evenly overall. MAC Purple Rage is redder, less brown, and has less shimmer. MAC Sonoran Rain is much redder. MAC Pret-a-Papier is similar but not as opaque. MAC Girls at Play has less brown, more berry coloring.

The three limited edition shades (Eclectic Edge, Ready to Roam, and Restless) are some of MAC’s best Lipglasses from recent memory. The reason is because they’re even, apply smoothly, and don’t accentuate lip lines by sinking into them. All three shades are on the opaque side, but what’s remarkable is really just how evenly the color applies. Lipglasses are sticky (one of the stickier formulas on the market) and have a thicker consistency, but they tend to be more long-wearing as a result of the tackiness. They’re also vanilla-scented. I tested all three shades over the past two days, and Eclectic Edge wore for four hours, Ready to Roam for five hours, and Restless for four and a half hours.

A Perfect Bronze for Fall

MAC Rich Ground Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “reddened coco with frost.” It’s a subtly red-toned bronzy brown with a soft sheen. Make Up For Ever #14 is darker, redder. Make Up For Ever #12 is more copper in color. Urban Decay Lucky is rather similar, perhaps a smidgen more copper.

I’m so glad this is part of the permanent range, because it’s a lovely shade of coppery brown. The red undertones are downplayed, so it won’t emphasize any redness in the eye, which can sometimes make eyes look tired. Instead, this has just enough sheen to brighten with enough lightness to be an alternative to both black and brown. The pigmentation was excellent–I was able to get a fully opaque line of color in one stroke with the 263 angled brush. It wore for an impressive ten hours when I tested its long-wearing claim yesterday!

Three Nail Lacquers for Style Seekers

MAC Styleseeker Nail Lacquers ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) come in three shades: Gadabout Girl (blackened plum), Mean & Green (purple with teal multi-changing pearl), and Styleseeker (duochrome orange-red). Quick note: the press release indicates these are $16, and normal polish price is $16 at MAC, but online, these three are listed at $15.

Gadabout Girl is a deep blackened burgundy with a hint of purple. The color wasn’t completely opaque after two coats, mostly because it had some streakiness, so the color just wasn’t even everywhere. As you can see, there’s no real visible nail line, but it’s not opaque. The formula was thin. China Glaze Urban Night is lighter, more eggplant-purple. Rescue Beauty Lounge Recherche is cooler-toned. Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame is redder/browner in tone. Rescue Beauty Lounge Moulin Rouge is very similar but applies more opaque. Deborah Lipmann Single Ladies is redder. MAC Blueblood was rather close. China Glaze Velvet Bow is redder. Urban Decay Wrecked is a smidgen redder. MAC Purple Majesty is very similar. Zoya Anja is rather close. Rescue Beauty Lounge Drifter is also quite similar.

Mean & Green has a murky blackened olive base color with green and purple sparkle/micro-glitter. It has a duochrome, so it flashes from pink-purple to olive-green. This shade was originally released with Venomous Villains (which is the bottle I swatched here), and it has since been added to the permanent range. It wasn’t quite opaque after two coats. Orly Space Cadet is exactly the same.

Styleseeker is a rich orange-red with metallic threads of ruby shimmer. The duochrome on this is very subtle, and that’s partially because the colors are just so similar that it’s hard to see. It’s no Bad Fairy. There are some noticeable brush strokes, but they’re subtle, and it was opaque after two coats. It has a longer drying time. Nubar Bronzo is darker. I think Nubar might have a dupe of this, as they have several duochromes, but I wasn’t able to remember/find the shade that I’m thinking of.

Mean & Green is now part of the permanent range, so you don’t have to rush out to get it. Gadabout Girl seems extremely dupeable, so it’s not a shade that seems worth dealing with a thin formula for. Styleseeker was the best overall and the shade I couldn’t think of a great dupe for. I typically get a week of wear with no chipping and just minor tip wear with MAC’s formula. MAC’s polishes are more expensive than they seem they should be (for a mid-end brand), especially since you only get 0.34 fl. oz.

Something Warm and Orange Comes This Way

MAC Worldly Wealth Blush ($20.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “shimmering peachy-bronze” with a frost finish. It’s a warm, orange-brown with golden bronze shimmer-sheen. When sheered out, the orange tones become more prevalent. MAC Glorify is very similar, just more shimmery. Estee Lauder Topaz Chameleon is darker, browner. MAC Light Over Dark is similar when blended together.

This is more like your traditional bronzer; it has similar brown, orange, and gold tones to it that typically make up a bronzing product (of course, not all!). It can be used to give a sunkissed glow to certain areas of the face or add warmth to the skin/cheeks. The finish on this shade is rather shimmery, so it does emphasize pores just slightly, but it’s not a major drawback.

The pigmentation was good, and all skin tones should be able to use it from that standpoint; it doesn’t go on so heavily that you have to use a light hand, but you don’t have to pack it on to get it to show up on deeper complexions. I think it will work best on warmer undertones, though, because there is a lot of orange in it. When I wore this for wear, it lasted for seven hours with noticeable fading at that point. The texture was soft and very blendable.

A Coral Worth Waiting For

MAC Supercontinental Blush ($20.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “bright cute coral” with a satin finish. It’s a soft coral-pink–it’s just a smidgen pink, but it doesn’t have strong orange undertones. It looks a little peach-coral in the pan but reads pinker on the skin. There is a subtle sheen to the finish, nothing overwhelming. Guerlain Peach Boy is more orange. MAC Fleet Fast has gold shimmer, is a smidgen darker, and has a stronger red tone to it. Tarina Tarantino Feather is lighter, slightly pinker. Make Up For Ever #6 is similar but has a cream formula.

From the launch, this is probably one of my favorite products, and it is one of the better performing ones, too. It’s a softer coral, and the color you can get, at most, is true-to-pan–but it is a lighter color from the get-go, so it may look chalky or disappear on deeper skin tones. On light to medium-dark skin tones, I think it’s a particularly flattering coral because it doesn’t have a lot of orange, but it’s not too pink. The satin finish gives it a really lovely, natural sheen on the skin–it won’t emphasize pores at all. When I wore this for wear, it lasted a full eight hours and was just barely starting to fade around nine hours. The texture could be a smidgen softer, which was really the only complaint I had.
