MAC Fall Colour: Lipsticks

MAC Fall Colour Lipsticks ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) includes eight (yes, eight!) shades: Fleshpot (pale muted pinky beige), Fusion Pink (bright coral), Neon Orange (bright clean orange), Plum Bright (purple), Ruby Woo (vivid bluish-red), Show Orchid (vivid hot pink), Violetta (bright clean violet purple), and X-S (dirty red chestnut). These are part of the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and rolls out internationally in October. Plum Bright is the only new and limited edition shade, while X-S used to be permanent, I believe it was discontinued (I have old, old swatches of it but it’s not listed online any more). Ruby Woo is permanent at all MAC locations, and the other shades are permanent at PRO stores.

• Fleshpot is a pale, beige nude with just a hint of pink. It has a satin finish, so it has a creamier feel and appearance with opaque color coverage. This shade is similar to NARS Madere, MAC Supremely Confident, and MAC Happy Hibiscus.
• Fusion Pink is a bright red-coral with a fuchsia sheen. It has an amplified finish, so it is creamier and more opaque but still has a shine. Make Up For Ever #37 is more coral. MAC Insanely It is pinker, as is NARS Funny Face.
• Neon Orange is a bright, medium-dark orange with an amplified finish. It’s creamy and opaque. There are a fair amount of dupes for this shade in the gallery, among them: MAC Good to Go, Clarins Clementine, and MAC Morange.
• Plum Bright is a reddish plum-purple with semi-opaque color coverage and a glossy shine. The information I have lists it as a satin, but it feels like a lustre or glaze (and looks like it, too). It has a lot of slip and less color payoff than a satin and lacks the overall creamy texture. My tube is a sample and doesn’t have final labeling, so I can’t confirm either way. MAC Bust Out is lighter and purpler. It’s less red compared to Thierry Mugler Dream and MAC Riveting Rose.
• Ruby Woo is a blue-based red with a matte finish and nearly opaque color coverage. It’s one of the driest lipsticks I’ve ever used; it’s kind of my benchmark for dry, actually. It does pull and drag a bit, but it wears like a champ (but it’s drying after four or five hours of wear). It is similar to a lot of other blue-based reds.
• Show Orchid is a vibrant fuchsia-pink with fuchsia-purple iridescence. It has mostly opaque color coverage and an amplified finish. NARS Schiap is pinker and doesn’t have the fuchsia sheen.
• Violetta is a reddened violet purple with soft shimmer. It has most opaque color coverage and an amplified finish. I can’t think of a dupe for this shade.
• X-S will be reviewed when I am able to purchase it!

This set of lipsticks includes a lot of my personal favorites. Most of these shades are rich in color, comfortable to wear, and wear on the longer side (because they’re more intense, so they’re more apt to stain, while the finishes are creamier so they cling to lips). MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented, and I typically get three to six hours of wear from them. With amplified and satin finishes, I tend to get four to five, though shades like Ruby Woo are so dry and matte that they wear closer to six.

For the record, I’d like to state that releasing eight lipsticks in a full color collection this one is borderline ridiculous!

The Summer Season: MAC Show Orchid Lipstick

MAC Show Orchid Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a vibrant shade of fuchsia-pink with iridescent fuchsia-purple sheen. It’s a bold and bright shade that’s definitely eye-catching. It is a full-color coverage lipstick with a creamy feel and light sheen. It has an amplified creme finish, which means it has a creamy (but not too creamy–there’s no real slip here) and incredibly pigmented. It smells like vanilla, has no taste (at least, not to me), and wears for a good four hours before it needs a reapplication.

MAC Riveting Collection: Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

I know, Riveting is like… what? I’m not even done with Spring Colour Forecast. Well, don’t rest on your laurels, because Riveting debuts the 18th (next Thursday), while Tabloid Beauty launches the 25th (but don’t worry, it’s all repromotes…), and then you have Too Fabulous, which launches on March 4th. But let me just tell you, if you’re a mineralize blush fan and you like things that look pretty, Too Fabulous is *totally* up your alley.

Riveting contains four lipsticks–two are ones we’ve seen before. Bubbles (repromote–last seen in Sugarsweet, I believe) and Show Orchid (PRO), as well as two new one: Metal Maven and Riveting.

Lipstick ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

Bubbles is an iridescent, frosty sheer warmed up silvery-white. It has a glaze finish, so it’s smoother than a frost (and doesn’t catch every imperfection on your lip in the light), but it has a frostier look. Bubbles is probably not designed to really wear alone, but more to layer underneath a lipglass. Try it with True Babe on top (will show you later this week).

Metal Maven is a metallic-frosty light silver. It’s more opaque than Bubbles, and it is distinctly silver (whereas Bubbles reads more like whitish with a tinge of silver/metallic-ness). Again, unless you want to rock a metallic silver lip (then layer with Rock Out lipglass!), more to layer with than to wear alone. Try it with True Babe on top (will show you later on this week).

Riveting is a very brownish-gray with a plummy touch to it. It’s a glaze lipstick and looks and feels more like a glaze than Bubbles. It actually has a surprising amount of coverage, going on nearly opaque on my lips. This isn’t quite a vampy shade, because it doesn’t hold the boldness of it, but it’s still dark even though it’s muted.

Show Orchid is a retina-burning bright fuchsia with fuchsia-purple sheen and rich, full coverage color. I love the amplified finish (one of my personal favorite finishes), too. This is available year-round at PRO stores, and MAC finds a way to make it show up on the consumer website once or twice a year. Always a fun choice!

Valentine’s Day Makeup: It’s the New Pink

Last night, I asked the late night Twitter crowd if I should do a colorful or natural look — I was originally thinking about doing something soft and natural, but colorful was the voice of the majority, so I ran with it. I thought about it, and I decided I should do some pinks, and then I started feeling like something Barbie might wear, you know, if she was obsessed with makeup and wore color up to her brows…

Since it’s always fun try out different lips, I went with two extremes: hot fuchsia pink and cool-toned pink-purple. I think what you pair it with, lips-wise, is really something that’s about what you feel comfortable in and if it’s appropriate for the occasion. I’d totally wear the hot pink lips out at night — don’t care if it doesn’t follow makeup rules! To tone it down, go for something in-between — light enough so it doesn’t compete with the eyes, but not so light that it washes you out. My go-to for a look like this is Sweetie lipstick topped with Luminary lustreglass, but I wasn’t trying to be subtle with this look, so there ya go. Best part about makeup? It’s fun! Second best part? It washes off

I’m pretty sure I totally rocked this kind of look one Valentine’s Day, so let’s go with that.  I’m almost positive I did the ultra bright, ultra fuchsia, and totally unforgiving hot pink lip on a Valentine’s Day, at least.  You could totally put some awesome false lashes on for even more dramatic eye, too!

You will need the following…

• Eyes: MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot (neutral beige base), (opalescent white-pink), MAC Pink Opal PigmentMAC Seedy Pearl Eyeshadow (pinky-white), MAC Stars ‘n Rockets Eyeshadow (fuchsia-purple), MAC Fig. 1 Eyeshadow (eggplant), MAC Passionate Eyeshadow (medium-deep pink), MAC Penultimate Eyeliner (black), Urban Decay Lust 24/7 Liner (purple), Chanel Exceptionnel Mascara (black)
• Cheeks: Benefit Sugarbomb Powder (peachy-pink) / Illamasqua Kate Blush (cool-toned pink)
• Lips: MAC Show Orchid Lipstick (PRO) (fuchsia-purple), MAC Luminary Lustreglass (opalescent) / MAC Saint Germain Lipstick (cool-toned pink-purple), MAC Luminary Lustreglass (opalescent)
• Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: Saint Germain = Snob

For eyes, start by applying Soft Ochre paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid with the 249. Put one or two drops of water-based mixing medium (or water) on your 239, and then apply Pink Opal pigment on the lid, going just above the crease. Using the 239, apply Seedy Pearl eyeshadow on the lower lid. Next, apply Stars ‘n Rockets eyeshadow on the outer third of the eyelid and lightly blend with crease. Darken the outer third of the lid with Passionate eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Next, define the crease by applying Fig. 1 eyeshadow with the 226. Lightly tap and brush Seedy Pearl eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Seedy Pearl eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Lust Liner on the lower lash line and Penultimate eyeliner on the upper lash line, and then sweeping lashes with Exceptionnel mascara.

For cheeks, apply Benefit Sugarbomb to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116 for a warmer cheek; try Illamasqua Kate for a cooler pink cheek.

For lips, apply Show Orchid lipstick first, and then layer Luminary lustreglass for a bolder lip look. For a paler lip look, try Saint Germain lipstick as a base, and then top with Luminary lustreglass.

PINK LIPS MAKE YA FEEL SEXYYYYY!

I used Pink Pearl pigment on lid (PRO), Stars ‘n Rockets eyeshadow on lid, Parfait Amour eyeshadow in crease, Contrast eyeshadow above crease, Thunder eyeshadow above Contrast (LE), Nylon eyeshadow on brow, Royal Wink fluidliner on upper lash line, Lovely Lily pigment on lower lash line (LE), Graphblack technakohl on lower waterline, and Plushblack plushlash mascara on lashes. I wore Don’t Be Shy blush (LE) on cheeks. I had Show Orchid (PRO) lipstick with Cult Fave lipglass (LE) on my lips.
