MAC Push the Edge Pigment

MAC Push the Edge Pigment ($21.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “deep bright purple with pearl.” It’s a rich violet purple with strong fuchsia-red undertones and a frosted finish. NARS Trash is a bit darker and less shimmery, plus it is a cream product. Make Up For Ever #26 is also a cream product, but it is more similar in color.

There’s a slight chalkiness to the base of this color; it’s almost as if there’s a matte or semi-matte purple base along with lots of shimmer/frost, but they don’t quite blend and meld together perfectly. When applied dry, it tends to look and feel powdery, and it yields a sheer, washed out payoff. When applied damp (I used water), the intensity of the color increases, and it looks much smoother and more opaque–the shimmer content also becomes more pronounced. MAC actually markets pigments as a product that will adhere to skin that can be used sheerly or intensely, and that it is long-lasting. I applied it with water to dampen the color and smooth it out, and it lasted for eight hours without creasing or fading.

Like much of this collection, Push the Edge is a repromote, so you may already have it in your stash.

MAC Disney Venomous Villains Collection: Dr. Facilier Review, Photos, Swatches

The last part of the collection is Dr. Facilier’s part. It includes one lipgelee, three pigments, two greasepaint sticks, and two magically cool liquid powders. It also has a silver mirror compact with Dr. Facilier on the outside (not shown or reviewed here).

All of the character images are stamped on the products; they are not stickers. You can find official promotional imagery and color descriptions here. The collection launches on September 30th, 2010 at all MAC locations, October 2010 internationally, and approximately September 28th for online. You may also want to check your local store to see if they are holding an unveiling/preview party for the collection.

Pigment ($19.50 U.S. / $23.50 CDN)

Melon is a peachy-gold with subtle pink undertones. I love Melon as a base for corals, golds, reds, and bronzes. It also works nicely to highlight cheeks or lips. This is part of the permanent range.

Brash & Bold is a bright pop of dark pink with subtle satin sheen. It’s smooth, pigmented, and not frosty at all. It was released last year with Makeup Art Cosmetics.

Push the Edge is a lightly shimmered violet purple. It has a nice richness in color, and it has a slightly metallic sheen. It was released last year with Makeup Art Cosmetics.

Magically Cool Liquid Powder ($29.50 U.S. / $35.50 CDN)

Truth & Light is a soft peach nude sheen. Yes, it feels like liquid when you apply it to skin, and yes, it is a little wet, and then it dries to a powder finish. It is VERY cool to play with, I can assure you! This is something one might use all over or to highlight certain areas; it’s very subtle and not at all frosty. (It doesn’t photograph/show well on my cheeks by itself.) It can be used under or over makeup.

Cajun is a medium tan with soft peach sheen. It gives my cheeks just a little bit of a tanned/bronzed look–again, very subtle, but more noticeable on its own than Truth & Light.

Lipgelee ($15.50 U.S. / $18.50 CDN)

Resort Life is an over-the-top white champagne shimmered, silver glittered sheer gloss with subtle pink glitter. It was originally released in MAC in Lillyland.

Greasepaint Stick ($17.50 U.S. / $21.00 CDN)

Slick Black is a deep dark black, very solid and opaque. It’s been released a few times now.

French Quarter is a smoldering golden taupe brown with a black-brown base and flecks of bronze glitter-shimmer. It’s stunning, and it would make a great base for darker, smokier looks. Much, much warmer than Dirty Greasepaint Stick.

See more photos and swatches!

Please note: As a press event attendee, I received samples of the full collection packaged in a “tower” with four boxes (one for each character), and as far as I know, it’s press packaging — therefore not something you will see or be able to purchase in-store.

Brash & Bold Pigment

MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection: Pigments

The talented photographer Marilyn Minter was inspired by MAC’s glitters and pigments. From her portion of the Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection comes two Reflects Glitters (Copper and Rust), two Glitters (Gold and Fuchsia), four pigments (Cocomotion, Brash & Bold, Heritage Rouge, and Push the Edge), as well as Gloss Texture in Clear.

Pigment ($19.50)

Brash & Bold is a velvety, deep fuchsia-red with subtle fuchsia-purple sheen. If Bright Fuchsia and Pink Pearl pigment had a baby, this would be it.

Heritage Rouge is a dark, cranberry-burgundy frost. It’s incredibly pigmented and goes on smooth. It’s one of the best pigment textures to date. This was a previously released shade, so be sure to check your stash to make sure you don’t already have one.

Push the Edge is a deep blue-based violet purple with soft shimmer/sheen. It reminded me a lot of Entremauve pigment but bluer, not quite as plum. The textures are even similar, as this one is a bit chalky (though not terribly so).

Cocomotion is a rich shade of antique gold with a bit more brightness than your typical antique gold. It’s one of my favorite shades of pigments (again, check your stash before buying), because it’s extremely smooth, rich in pigmentation, and is a dream to work with.

Product: 9/10

Value: 9/10

Ease of Use: 8/10

Packaging: 8/10

Recommendation: I think both Brash & Bold and Push the Edge pigments represent two shades we don’t often see MAC putting out. While neither is necessarily absolutely, positively original, they’re both pleasant surprises. Cocomotion and Heritage Rouge are also exceptional shades, and it’s good to see them make a return, at least for a limited time.
