Pret-a-Papier Look: Coral Crepe as a Base

I wore this look to photograph lip swatches from Pret-a-Papier yesterday, but here it is in detail By the by, I prefer the lighter Chromagraphic Pencil on my waterline — the darker one is a bit too subdued and runs a little yellowish on me.

You will need the following…

Eyes: MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot (neutral beige base), MAC Coral Crepe Paint Pot (coral), MAC Tissue Weight Eyeshadow (soft white-pink), MAC Bamboo Eyeshadow (matte soft brown), MAC Cut to Fit Eyeshadow (reddish copper), MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow (neutral highlighter), MAC NC15/NW20 Chromagraphic Pencil (fleshy nude), MAC Almost Noir Pearlglide Eyeliner (black-burgundy), MAC Plushlash Mascara (black)
Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
Cheeks: MAC Garb Blush (orange-peach)
Lips: MAC Made to Order Lipstick (pinky coral), MAC Fold and Tuck Lipglass (pink-coral)
Brushes: 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
Substitutes: Tissue Weight = Phloof!/Gleam; Cut to Fit = Twinks; Almost Noir = Purple Dash; Garb = Coppertone/Peachtwist; Made to Order = Crosswires (not a great dupe!); Fold and Tuck = Lychee Luxe

For eyes, start by applying Coral Crepe paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid area with the 249, then apply Soft Ochre paint pot as an eyeshadow base from the crease to the brow. Using the 239, apply Tissue Weight eyeshadow on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply Bamboo eyeshadow on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with Cut to Fit eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Lightly blend Cut to Fit eyeshadow, with the 239, on the outer corner and lid. Lightly tap and brush Bamboo eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Ricepaper eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Almost Noir eyeliner on the lower lash line and NC15/NW20 chromagraphic pencil on the lower waterline. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Garb blush to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Made to Order lipstick first, and then layer Fold and Tuck lipglass for a complementing lip.

MAC Pret-a-Papier Collection: Overall Review & Round-up

OVERALL, Pret-a-Papier is a softer, more muted collection for those looking for a more natural look–from eyes to lips to cheeks. I still get a very autumnal feel with this collection, and I think that’s why it has me off-kilter. I’m just expecting to see a little more vibrancy with the summer nearing. I see some loving this for its more neutral feel, but I see others frustrated with the general subtleness of the collection.

Nice-to-haves: Made to Order Lipstick, Pret-a-Papier Lipglass, Tissue Weight Eyeshadow, Instant Chic Blush

Skip: Archetype

Skip if…

Skip CUT TO FIT if you have shades like Twinks.
Skip GAZETTE GREY unless you’re willing to wear it with a darker base to amp up the pigmentation of such a sheer shadow.
Skip GARB if you have pinker undertones (if you aren’t able to try it in person), because it may go orange.
Skip KRAFT if you have Touch–unless you wear this type of color often–as Touch is incredibly similar, only a smidgen less red.

MAC Pret-a-Papier Collection: Lipsticks Review, Photos, Swatches

None of the lipsticks blew me away — they don’t quite seem to make it there. Taken as a whole, they’re almost too similar to each other. I think looking at the collection overall, it feels like there are no punches of color or vibrancy. For a summer collection, it definitely feels like something we’d see in the fall. I had trouble with the consistency of Archetype and Dressmaker, Dressmaker to apply evenly and smoothly on lips, but Kraft was true to its amplified finish. Made to Order is a very soft, glossy lustre that applies evenly, so I did like that one.

Lipstick ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

Archetype is a yellowed nude with a lustre finish, but it almost feels like a lustre-frost. Archetype is best applied on freshly exfoliated lips, because it really will accentuate any flaw or bit of dryness you have on your lips–not such a pretty sight! This was originally released with McQueen, a few years back.
Dressmaker, Dressmaker is a semi-sheer, glossy coral-peach in a lustre finish. I want to love it, because it’s coral-ish, but the way it looks on my lips is just so-so. If you wear a creamy gloss on top, I think it’d come together better.
Kraft is a creamy, nearly opaque brownish/reddish beige with an amplified finish. It’s a fairly darker shade, but it has a beautiful finish and feel.
Made to Order is a semi-opaque, glossy darked coral-pink with a fuchsia-pink sparkle in a lustre finish. Of the three lustre lipsticks in this launch, Made to Order is definitely the best–it gives even, smooth color while still delivering the glossiness that is inherent in lustre finishes.

Three lipglasses released with this collection, but being the coral fiend I am, Fold and Tuck was the one that I liked the most. It was a lovely shade of coral that was there but not bright with good color. I love the concept of Pret-a-Papier, but it would definitely look better over a lipstick.

Lipglass ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

C-Thru is a creamy, milky flesh-toned shade. It’s very much a nude lipglass and can settle into lip lines, so it’s a better shade for layering than to wear alone. This is a permanent shade from MAC’s lipglass collection, so no need to rush for this one. Also, though it’s pigmented in a sense, it’s still going to show some of your natural lip color–the more pigmented your lip color, the less nude this will be, though it will still tone your natural lip color down.
Fold and Tuck is a beautiful pinky coral with soft golden flecks. It’s everything I wanted Lychee Luxe to be (while pretty, it’s not the coral I’ve been wanting to see from MAC). It’s the most pigmented of the three glosses, and it’s only a little warm, so both warm and cool skin tones can easily wear this.
Pret-a-Papier is a darkened amber-reddish bronze. It reminds me of past shades like Liqueur, not so much in terms of color, but in the way it looks and feels and works.

Even though there are definitely some products I like in this launch, there is no item that caught my eye more than Originality. If you like nail polish, you gotta get it!

Nail Lacquer ($12.00 U.S. / $14.50 CDN)

Brown Bag is a muted, darkened flesh-toned shade–nude, as they’d say–but it’s much darker than my skin tone (probably NC20/25 on my fingertips). Perhaps if you’re NC/NW35 or 40 it might be your perfect nude. Nonetheless, it’s a creamy nude with flecks of champagne shimmer strewn through it, and it goes opaque in two coats (and pictured with two). But I gotta say, Brown Bag is a pain-in-the-behind to photograph!
Originality is a gorgeous, shimmering warmed-up bronze with copper flecks. This is truly a stunning shade–it’s almost metallic but not quite–it shimmers and dances. It goes opaque in just two coats (and the swatches are of two), dries to a slightly textured finish but it’s fairly smooth, but it removes easily.

I am both a little surprised–but very delighted–to say that the Chromagraphic Pencils work wonderfully on the waterline. They look lovely–very fresh and awake–without being too light. I used NC/NW15 on my waterline as soon as I had finished photographing them (nobody likes to see used stuff photograph, yeah?), and here I am three hours later with it still hanging on. I’d definitely say to grab one when you’re able to if you’ve always wanted an easy way to open up and brighten your eyes.

Chromagraphic Pencil ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

NC15/NW20 is a light nude with a creamy feel and look.
NW25/NC30 is a yellower, deeper nude with the same creaminess as the other shade.

Paint Pot ($16.50 U.S. / $22.00 CDN)

Coral Crepe is a reddened, darkened coral-orange with a slight golden sheen. It can be sheered out a bit, but it really goes on quite coral. I tried as a base, and it can definitely be worn on the eyes. I also tried it on the lips, and I’d vote nay on that in the future–very drying and chalky looking. Havne’t tried it on the cheeks, but you might be able to do that.
Groundwork is a softened brown with a yellow undertone. This is a permanent shade.
