MAC Playland Collection
MAC Playland Collection

MAC Playland Collection pops up online on April 10th April 15th (MAC corporate confirmed as of 4/10 8:26AM PST) and hits stores and counters on April 17th. The emphasis of this collection is likely going to be on the lipsticks, I think, given the finish, brightness, and opacity of the six. I’ll be picking up the two shades of Casual Color I don’t have, and as soon as I receive and test, you’ll see reviews for those as well.  The Chromagraphic Pencil formula is excellent, but it’s long been part of the permanent Pro range and has been released previously in a consumer launch as well, so while lovely, they are repromotes, which is the same case for three of the four Pigments.  The Lipglasses were a miss for me–almost all had problems applying evenly.

Nordstrom has Playland available online now (4/14 at 8:54AM PST).

MAC Black Black Chromagraphic Pencil
MAC Black Black Chromagraphic Pencil

The MAC Playland Collection features four shades of MAC Chromagraphic Pencils ($16.00 for 0.04 oz.). This formula is permanent at PRO stores, and all shades have existed for awhile now. I have reviewed the formula a few times in the past, so this is a quickie review to include updated swatches, add dupes, and individual ratings. I’m a big fan of the Chromagraphic Pencil formula, because it’s very creamy, intensely pigmented, and long-wearing, but there are some shades that can’t be used on the water line and/or eye area, as well as some shades aren’t to be used on the lip area (all warnings are below).

The following shades are not to be used in the lip area: Black Black, Marine Ultra, NC15/NW20, NW25/NC30, NC42/NW35
The following shades are not to be used in the eye area: Basic Red, Genuine Orange, Process Magenta
The following shades are not to be used in the inner rim of eye: Basic Red, Process Magenta, Genuine Orange, Primary Yellow, Landscape Green, Marine Ultra, Hi-Def Cyan, Rich Purple

Black Black is described as a “deepest black.” It’s a deep, dark, inky black with a satin finish. Intensely pigmented, incredibly long-wearing, and fantastic on the water line. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Genuine Orange is described as a “bright orange.” It’s a medium, yellow-toned orange with a matte finish. It had rich, opaque color in a single stroke. This shade includes a warning that it is not to be used in the eye area or the inner rim of the eye. I couldn’t think of any dupes for this shade!

Hi-Def Cyan is described as a “hi-def cyan.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark sky blue with a matte finish. It had great pigmentation, and it was very buildable and creamy. This shade includes a warning that it is not to be used on the inner rim of the eye. I couldn’t think of dupes for this shade either.

Process Magenta is described as a “matte magenta.” It’s a vibrant, fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was rich and opaque in a single pass. This shade includes a warning that it is not to be used in the eye area or the inner rim of the eye. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Playland Pigments
MAC Playland Pigments

The MAC Playland Collection features four shades of MAC Pigments ($21.00 for 0.15 oz.). Two shades are part of the permanent PRO range, while one is part of the permanent range.

Ever So Yellow is described as a “soft yellow with pearl.” It’s a vibrant, medium yellow with a frosted sheen. Applied dry, it has more of a satin-like finish, but applied with a dampened brush, it becomes much, much more pearly and high-shine. It had good color payoff both wet and dry, though, but it can be a little powdery if used loose and dry. This shade stains, so you might want to use a thicker base or primer to avoid the staining on the skin. It wore well for eight hours before showing very slight creasing. Makeup Geek Lemon Drop (P, $5.99) is very similar. Sephora Collection Banana Split (05) (P, $13.00) is slightly darker. NARS Flowers 1 #5 (LE, $24.00) is similar. MAC Bright Sunshine (P, $15.00) is a touch lighter. Make Up For Ever Jaune (LE, $20.00) is less shimmery. Make Up For Ever #24 (P, $23.00) is a cream product, less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Golden Olive is described as a “high frosted green-gold.” It’s a medium-dark, muted green with warm undertones and a golden khaki frosted finish. Applied dry, it had fairly good color payoff and had a frosted finish, and applied with a dampened brush, it had excellent color payoff and a high-shine sheen. This shade wore well for almost eight hours before I saw slight creasing. For reference, this shade is “not for use in the lip area” per the warning on the box. Urban Decay Jealous #1 (LE, $18.00) is darker. Urban Decay Mildew (P, $18.00) is darker. MAC Spread the Wealth (LE, $16.50) is a cream product. Guerlain Coup de Foudre #1 (LE) is darker, less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Hi-Def Cyan is described as a “cyan blue.” It’s a brightened, light-medium blue with a matte finish. It’s part of the permanent PRO range, and I remember buying this, along with the rest of the neon pigments, and discovering just how much work it was to get it to perform half-decently. The texture is very finely-milled but dry, almost chalky, so it doesn’t apply evenly and is difficult to blend. It’s very prone to fading and creasing–within six hours–but leaves a green-ish stain behind. For reference, this shade is “not for use in the lip area” per the warning on the box. Wet ‘n’ Wild A Regular at the Factory #2 (LE, $2.29) is darker. NARS Mad Mad World #1 (P, $24.00) and MAC Electric Eel (P, $15.00) are much darker. MAC Blue Candy (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned, darker. Make Up For Ever #118 (P, $20.00) is warmer. Inglot #371 (P, $6.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Neo-Orange is described as an “intense neon salmon.” It’s a brightened, coral-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. Like Hi-Def Cyan, it’s difficult to use, because it has a very chalky, dry consistency and feel. It’s a real challenge to apply, blend, and even wear, as it fades within six hours but leaves a splotchy stain behind. For reference, this shade is “not for use in the lip or eye area” per the warning on the box. Sephora Collection Rio (91) (P, $13.00) is lighter. Kat Von D Placebo (LE) is pinker. MAC Ablaze (LE, $15.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever #5 (P, $20.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC For Your Amusement Casual Colour
MAC For Your Amusement Casual Colour

MAC For Your Amusement Casual Colour ($21.00 for 0.43 oz.) is described as a “bright pastel pink.” It’s a light pink with subtle warm, yellow undertones and a satiny sheen. Chanel Sakura (87) (LE, $43.00) is darker, warmer, powder. Giorgio Armani Eccentrico (LE, $88.00) is more shimmery, darker, powder. Edward Bess Filled with Desire (P, $43.00) is powder. MAC Rosy Outlook (P, $23.50) is more muted, darker, powder. MAC Launch Away (LE, $21.00) is slightly darker, powder. Illamasqua Lies (P, $26.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It’s one of three shades coming out in the Playland collection, which will be available online on April 10th April 15th (MAC corporate confirmed as of 4/10 8:26AM PST). This is the only shade I have from the collection, but once it launches, I will purchase the remaining two (just a heads up!). The Casual Colour formula is a lip-and-cheek product, but it’s one that performs better on cheeks than on lips. As a blush, it wears about seven hours and has buildable, semi-opaque color coverage, but due to the lightness of the color, it’s best suited to lighter skin tones (it doesn’t show up on my medium complexion very noticeably). As a lip color, it wears three hours but tends to “crack” and settle into lip lines as it wears, due to the drier consistency. It’s very unforgiving as a lip product if your lips are not completely smooth, as the product will catch easily on any unevenness. I also found it somewhat drying as a lip product and generally uncomfortable to wear, so again, it’s a product that seems best applied as a cream blush. On the upside, each pot contains significantly more product than the average lipstick or cream blush.

MAC Lipglass -- Bright Side, Lots of Laughs, Live It Up, Carousel, Pure Silliness
MAC Lipglass — Bright Side, Lots of Laughs, Live It Up, Carousel, Pure Silliness

The MAC Playland Collection includes five new and limited edition shades of MAC LipglassApril 10th April 15th (MAC corporate confirmed as of 4/10 8:26AM PST) and in-stores and at counter on April 17th.

Bright Side is described as a “creamy yellow.” It’s a medium, warm-toned yellow with white pearl. It’s semi-sheer, so when applied to my lips, my natural lip color makes it so it ends up looking like a yellow-peach. It didn’t apply evenly, though, and it tended to settle into lip lines. It wore well for three hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. I wasn’t able to think of any dupes for this one!

Carousel is described as a “creamy pink.” It’s a light-medium, cool-toned pink with a creamy, milky finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but I really wished it had applied evenly! The thickness of Lipglass seems to make these creamy, milky shades a total pain in the behind to apply. It lasted for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Patentpink (LE, $20.00) is less glossy. MAC Long Love Love (P, $19.50) is cooler-toned. MAC Saint Germain (LE, $15.00) is purpler. MAC Going Casual (LE, $20.00) is sheerer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Live It Up is described as a “creamy orange.” It’s a light-medium, milky orange with a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and this shade actually applied fairly evenly, though it wasn’t perfect. It wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. Maybelline Glistening Amber (055) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, sheerer, lighter. Chanel Envolee (427) (LE, $29.50) is lighter, sheerer. MAC Imperial Light (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, less pigmented. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Lots of Laughs is described as a “creamy peach.” It’s a light-medium, neutral-to-cool-toned pink with a creamy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and it applied so-so–a little unevenly, some settling into lip lines. It lasted for four hours on me, though, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. Urban Decay Lovechild (P, $20.00) is sheerer, darker.Revlon Bejeweled (P, $7.49) is sheerer. Maybelline Petal Plush (100) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter. MAC Picture Pink (LE, $15.00) is slightly lighter, cooler-toned. Urban Decay Obsessed (P, $19.00) is sheerer. MAC Infinitely Likeable (P, $19.50) is cooler-toned. MAC Stay Sweet (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Angel (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Pagoda (LE, $20.00) is slightly lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pure Silliness is described as a “creamy lilac.” It’s a cool-toned, light-medium pink-purple with a creamy, glossy finish. It applied terribly unevenly, though it had semi-opaque color coverage. The color wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Patentpink (LE, $20.00) is lighter. NARS Coeur Sucre (P, $26.00) is more shimmery. MAC Saint Germain (LE, $15.00) is a touch lighter.MAC Pink Nouveau (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Lipstick -- Happy-Go-Lucky, Head in the Clouds, Playland, Red Balloon, Sweet Experience, Toying Around<
MAC Lipstick — Happy-Go-Lucky, Head in the Clouds, Playland, Red Balloon, Sweet Experience, Toying Around

MAC Playland launches April 10th April 15th (MAC corporate confirmed as of 4/10 8:26AM PST) online, April 17th in-stores/counters, and it includes six new and limited edition shades of lipstick.

Head in the Clouds is described as a “red with pearl [with a Frost finish].” It’s a vibrant, cherry red with subtle cool undertones and a gold micro-shimmer. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly and easily as the consistency was lightly creamy and didn’t tug on the lips during application. The color wore well for five and a half hours and left a stain behind. It was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Viva Glam Rihanna (LE, $16.00) is darker, pinker. Chanel Enigmatique (135) (P, $34.00) is warmer, less glossy. NARS Dressed to Kill (P, $26.00) is darker. Milani Cherry Crave (P, $5.49) is more matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Playland is described as a “frosted yellow gold [with a Frost finish].” It’s a medium, yellow gold with a metallic finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, but the texture of the lipstick was somewhat on the drier side, so it didn’t apply as evenly as one would like. It is also unforgiving if your lips are not in tip-top shape, so those with naturally drier/chapped lips will want to do additional prep before applying this shade. It lasted for two and a half hours and was lightly drying during that time. Dolce and Gabbana Topazio (LE, $32.00) is slightly darker. MAC Ruffian Gold (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. Guerlain Altoum (LE, $35.00) is sheerer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Triptych (P, $18.00) is more opaque, more metallic. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Sweet Experience is described as a “bright pink [with an Amplified finish].” It’s a light-medium pink with subtle, yellow undertones and a satin finish. It had opaque color coverage, and the consistency was lightly creamy and didn’t tug or drag on the lips. It lasted for four hours when I tested it for wear and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Vivid Image (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Please Me (P, $16.00) is a few shades darker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Femme (P, $18.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Happy Go-Lucky is described as a “hot pink [with an Amplified finish].” It’s a vibrant, medium-dark magenta pink with cool, blue undertones and a natural sheen. It had rich, opaque pigmentation, and the texture of the lipstick was smooth, creamy, and easy to apply. This shade managed to wear for five hours and left behind a noticeable stain that lingered for another hour and a half. It was very lightly hydrating over time. Sephora + Pantone Universe Radiant Rush (LE, $18.00) is darker, less glossy. Bite Beauty Moscato (P, $28.00) is brighter. Chanel La Diva (44) (P, $34.00) is more matte. NARS Full Frontal (LE, $26.00) is more muted. Ardency Inn Twist (P, $25.00) is darker. MAC Dear Diary (LE, $18.00) is darker. MAC Outrageously Fun (LE, $16.00) is more muted. MAC Candy Yum Yum (P, $16.00) is slightly darker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nylon (P, $18.00) is brighter, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Red Balloon is described as a “hot fuchsia [with an Amplified finish].” It’s a brightened, medium-dark, cool-toned pink with a softly luminous finish. It had full color coverage, and the color applied evenly and smoothly as the consistency of the lipstick was lightly creamy. The color lasted for five and a half hours, and it was very lightly hydrating while worn. Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) (LE, $49.50) is redder, darker. Estee Lauder Dominant (P, $30.00) is cooler-toned. Tom Ford Beauty Incorrigible (08) (LE, $49.00) is lighter, more muted. Charlotte Tilbury Velvet Underground (P) is slightly cooler-toned, darker. MAC Pleasure Bomb (LE, $16.00) is darker, more matte. MAC Moxie (LE, $16.00) is more matte, slightly cooler-toned. MAC Girl About Town (P, $16.00) is darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Toying Around is described as a “hot coral pink [with an Amplified finish].” It’s a brightened, medium coral-orange with a soft shine. It had rich, totally opaque pigmentation when applied to the lips, and the color went on evenly, smoothly, and lasted for five hours. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating. Dior Sunset (660) (LE, $34.00) is darker, more shimmery. Estee Lauder Defiant Coral (P, $30.00) is slightly darker. Revlon Snow Peach (LE, $7.99) is pinker. Bite Beauty Crush (P, $28.00) is brighter. Tom Ford Beauty Paradiso (07) (LE, $49.00) is pinker. Marc Jacobs Beauty Shout (138) (LE, $30.00) is darker, pinker. Charlotte Tilbury Coachella Coral (P) is slightly pinker, more matte. Givenchy Rose Dressing (202) (P, $36.00) is pinker, darker. MAC Elegant Accent (P, $22.00) is pinker. MAC Watch Me Simmer (LE, $16.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
