MAC Crush Metal Pigments: Stacked 1!

MAC Spring Colour Forecast: Crush Metal Pigments Reviews, Photos, Swatches

The Crush Metal Pigment stacks contain four shades per set, but they actually come packaged in two “stacks,” though you can technically stack all four together. They look much like MAC’s travel packaging jars–they’re definitely much larger than typical 5 gram sample jars. They are roughly the same diameter as a MAC eyeshadow. The texture of these is reminiscent of Solar Bits, though I’d say they’re not chunky bits. It’s like a cross between Solar Bits and some of MAC’s frostier pigments (e.g. Kitschmas).

For your reference, these retail for $32.50 and must be bought either in Stacked 1! or Stacked 2! sets, they are not available for individual purchase. The total weight of the Stacked sets is 12 grams / 0.42 oz.

Stacked 1!

Stacked 1! consists of four shades: a shimmery medium-dark pink with gold flecks; a lightened, pale pink with light sheen; a dark violet with red undertones and soft violet sheen; and a shimmery icy lilac. I found the icy lilac shade to be the chunkiest, frostiest, and the most difficult to work with out of the bunch. The first two shades didn’t remind me of any pre-existing or previous pigments, but the darker purple reminded me of Push the Edge pigment (but without the violet sheen), while the icy lilac one is like a lighter, icier version of Kitschmas.

Stacked 2!

The four shades included in Stacked 2! are: a metallic light tan with a gilded gold sheen; a lightly frosted tan-gold with golden shimmer; a metallic yellow-based golden green with gold sheen; and a light, olived-toned green with slightly golden sheen. The tan shade reminds me of a slightly lighter, more metallic version of Tan pigment, whereas the beige-y tan is kind of like Blonde pigment. Neither green really has a great dupe, but they’re in the vein of maybe a much, much lighter and yellower version of Golden Olive pigment.

Brash & Bold Pigment

MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection: Pigments

The talented photographer Marilyn Minter was inspired by MAC’s glitters and pigments. From her portion of the Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection MAC Makeup Art Cosmetics Collection comes two Reflects Glitters (Copper and Rust), two Glitters (Gold and Fuchsia), four pigments (Cocomotion, Brash & Bold, Heritage Rouge, and Push the Edge), as well as Gloss Texture in Clear.

Pigment ($19.50)

Brash & Bold is a velvety, deep fuchsia-red with subtle fuchsia-purple sheen. If Bright Fuchsia and Pink Pearl pigment had a baby, this would be it.

Heritage Rouge is a dark, cranberry-burgundy frost. It’s incredibly pigmented and goes on smooth. It’s one of the best pigment textures to date. This was a previously released shade, so be sure to check your stash to make sure you don’t already have one.

Push the Edge is a deep blue-based violet purple with soft shimmer/sheen. It reminded me a lot of Entremauve pigment but bluer, not quite as plum. The textures are even similar, as this one is a bit chalky (though not terribly so).

Cocomotion is a rich shade of antique gold with a bit more brightness than your typical antique gold. It’s one of my favorite shades of pigments (again, check your stash before buying), because it’s extremely smooth, rich in pigmentation, and is a dream to work with.

Product: 9/10

Value: 9/10

Ease of Use: 8/10

Packaging: 8/10

Recommendation: I think both Brash & Bold and Push the Edge pigments represent two shades we don’t often see MAC putting out. While neither is necessarily absolutely, positively original, they’re both pleasant surprises. Cocomotion and Heritage Rouge are also exceptional shades, and it’s good to see them make a return, at least for a limited time.

Pink Pearl pigment is a gorgeous duochrome pigment that is both fuchsia-pink and fuchsia-purple. Think Stars ‘n Rockets eyeshadow, but prettier, more pigmented, and brighter.

Kelly Green pigment is a bright pop of springy green. Perfect to add brightness to any look, and it works particularly well as a green base.

True Chatreuse pigment is a matte, yellow-y green. It’s like Bitter, but insanely better, because it’s a lot more pigmented and opaque.

Naval Blue pigment is a dark, navy blue with a bit of cobalt reflects in it. Very pretty and dark.

See four more must-have pigments!

Emerald Green pigment is a rich, deep emerald green. It’s vibrant, opaque, and gorgeous.

White Gold pigment makes for a gorgeous lightly shimmered white with gold. It’s a nice shade for highlighting and accenting.

Blonde’s Gold pigment is a soft, tanned gold frosty pigment. It works well as a base, light highlighter, and works well when mixed with moisturizer for an all-over body glow.

Vintage Gold pigment is a metallic, vintage gold shade that works well on both warm and cool tones, because it isn’t overly warm nor a yellow gold.

Old Gold pigment is a stunning combination of yellowed green and green-gold mixed together. It’s an interesting mix of green and gold with a little bit of brown. This is a particularly good pigment for those with warmer tones in their skin.

Teal pigment is exactly as it is named — teal. It’s pigmented, smooth, and looks rich on eyes.

Golden Lemon pigment is a bright pop of yellow gold with lots of frost in its finish. It’s not necessarily a product for those who don’t love shimmer/frost in their eye products, but it is one of the best bases to use for gold, orange, and red eyeshadows.

Golden Olive pigment is a gorgeous soft, olive green. It’s smooth in texture, rich in color pay off, and feels soft. If you wear green eyeshdaow often, tihs is an absolute must.

See four more must-have pigments!

Melon pigment is a sunny, peachy-pink combination that can be worn alone, as a base, or to highlight.

Pink Opal pigment is perfect for highlighting and accenting the face, lips, or eyes. It’s one of the most versatile pigment shades, and definitely a favorite of mine.

Violet pigment is a beautiful shade of rich, medium-to-dark purple. It’s not too cool, not too warm–almost neutral–so it is great for all skin tones. Like the other pigments on this list, the product is pigmented and smooth to the touch.]

Vanilla or Naked pigments are superb highlighter/neutral shades to have in your pigment collection. Vanilla tends to work better on cooler skin tones, while Naked works on all skin tones, but it can lean just a touch warm.

Note: This list only considers consumer pigments, so it does not include PRO-only pigments. (There is a separate list for PRO-only pigments.)
