MAC Cool Fabulously Festive Face Kit

MAC Ice Parade: Cool Fabulously Festive Face Kit

MAC Cool Fabulously Festive Face Kit ($59.50) includes a palette with four eyeshadows and blush, along with a metallic, silver bag that also holds a lipstick, lipglass, and three miniature-sized brushes. MAC describes the shades, officially, as: Phloof! (frosted off white), Brun (muted blackish-brown), Quarry (soft muted plum-brown), Dance in the Dark (black-brown), Mocha (soft plum pink), Hot Gossip (mid-tone pinky plum), and Emancipation (light pink). The brushes included are the 129SE, 266SE, and 275SE. The eyeshadows weigh 0.22 oz. while the blush weighs 0.18 oz. (basically, everything is full-sized).

  • Phloof! is a pinked beige with a frosted finish; it has good color payoff and a smooth, soft texture. It has a frost finish and is part of the permanent range.
  • Brun is a dark, cool-toned brown with a hint of gray and a subtle sheen in its finish. The pigmentation is nice and the texture is soft overall. It has a satin finish and is part of the permanent range.
  • Quarry is a rosy mauve with a matte finish. It’s a bit dry and almost powdery with so-so color payoff. It has a matte finish and is part of the permanent range.
  • Dance in the Dark is a purple-tinted brown-black with a satin finish. The color payoff is below average, and the texture is stiff and dry, which contributes to the uneven color application. Wet ‘n’ Wild We’re Blasting Off is very similar but more pigmented.
  • Mocha is a brightened pink plum with a matte finish. It has a matte finish and is part of the permanent range. The color payoff is really nice, and I swear, this seems more vibrant than the permanent version (but I don’t currently own the permanent version to compare).
  • Hot Gossip is a plum-tinted pink with a frosted finish and mostly opaque color coverage. It has a cremesheen finish and is part of the permanent range.
  • Emancipation is a pink-beige with soft white shimmer that yields semi-opaque color coverage. It’s a milkier-looking gloss, so it does have a tendency to settle into lip lines. It is a repromote. It’s similar to Feelign Dreamy, Runway Fave, and Bare Nesceessities.

Of all of the holiday offerings, the Fabulously Festive Face Kits are the best bang-for-your-buck item and tend to be higher quality overall (maybe that has something to do with the inclusion of mostly permanent products?). Between the eyeshadows, blush, and lip products, you more than get what you spend back, so the subpar brushes are a bonus.

I did not and refuse to purchase any brush kits (for confirmation as to why, see Dusty’s review), but the brushes included in the Face Kits are disappointing. I found both the blush and eye brushes to be scratchy and lacked the density and precise shape of their full-sized counterparts. I had a ton of shedding and dye bleeding with the 129SE (and the full-sized 129 is one of the scratchier MAC brushes, so imagine this one!).

MAC Dazzlelight Eyeshadow

MAC Beiges, Whites, Highlighter Eyeshadow Swatches

This finishes up all of the swatches I have of permanent eyeshadows – I will try to purchase the shades I do not own soon and get those swatches up as well.

Dazzlelight is a soft beige white with a hint of warmth. It has a veluxe pearl finish. The color payoff is good with a soft, smooth texture. It is similar to Bare Escentuals Serendipitous. It’s kind of like MAC Brule in a frosted form.
Mylar is an ivory white with a mostly matte finish. It has a satin finish. It can look a little chalky because of its finish and color, though the payoff is good and application is smooth. It is similar to Inglot #351.
Phloof! is a light pinky-beige with a frost finish. It has good color payoff and applies smoothly. It is a little less warm compared to theBalm Hiii-Yaaa!.
Vanilla is a soft, creamy light beige with a nearly matte finish. It has a velvet finish. It’s very soft and easy to work with and has good pigmentation. It is similar to Inglot #353.
Vellum is an iridescent white with bluish-violet shimmer-sheen. It has a lustre finish. The color payoff is decent but not great, though the uniqueness of the shade tends to make it worth the effort.
Vex is a grayish-beige-pink with a tinge of olive-green to it. It has a frost finish. It has good color payoff, and it’s one of the more unique shades by MAC. Bare Escentual’s Urban Nature cream eyeshadow is similar.

White Frost is a shimmery soft white with poor color payoff, though it still has a smooth feel. It has a frost finish.

B

If you use these more as highlighters, then decent color payoff isn't so bad, because you don't necessarily one a really opaque white highlighter either. The texture on this set was good overall.

I did this two days ago, because I really just wanted to see how black I could get Hot Contrast to be. I wasn’t disappointed per se, but it definitely didn’t get as black as I envisioned (even when used wet). I tried my super black smoky eye I do from time to time, so the look follows that (so it’s nothing new!). I figured that would be the best way to test! I think I may end up exchanging Hot Contrast for another duo, only because Carbon works well enough for me as a black, IMO. Anyone want to try to talk me out of it?

Is everybody gearing up for Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale? I haven’t decided if I’m going to brave the 7AM crowd tomorrow – it’s a bit more of a hike (9 miles) from my new apartment, compared to last year when it was a skip away (1 mile). It was a MADHOUSE! last year, though, even at 7AM. Anyone excited over Colour Forms? That comes out tomorrow, too. I have to pick up my preorder (only two items), and then see if I can resist the pigments (not likely). What about you? What’d you pre-order?

Let’s talk Nordstrom lemmings and Colour Form hauls (or potential hauls) to keep Thursday from dragging its feet.

P.S. – Since several of you asked about a tutorial for this look, have you seen my black smokey eye tutorial?

I used Blacktrack fluidline on lid, Hot Contrast mineralize eyeshadow (solid side) (LE) all over lid, Hot Contrast mineralize eyeshadow (marble side) (LE) in crease, Vex eyeshadow above crease and on brow, Phloof! eyeshadow on brow to highlight, Graphblack technakohl on lower lash line, Pearl cream colour base on lower lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. I wore Pleasantry mineralize blush (LE) on cheeks. I had Sweetie lipstick with Crystal Rose lipglass (LE) on my lips.

** These are recommendations for dupes based on permanent colors available — may not necessarily be identical; they are the closest I can think of!

Hot Contrast (solid side) = Carbon; Hot Contrast (marble side) = Shale; Pleasantry = Pink Swoon; Crystal Rose = Pink Pearl Gloss
