Video Review: MAC Naturally Collection – First Impressions & Swatches

A (relatively, at least for me) quick look at MAC’s Naturally Collection, which launches in-stores on Thursday.

MAC Naturally: Lipsticks

There are four limited edition shades of MAC Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) in the Naturally collection: A Perfect Day (light neutral pink), Beach Sand (light tan), Pillow Talk (neutral pink), and Sweet Sunrise (light neutral peach-pink).

• A Perfect Day is a rosy beige nude with opaque color coverage and a creamy finish. It has an amplified finish. MAC Naked Bliss is darker. MAC Supremely Confident is much lighter. MAC Woo Me has less pink. MAC Faerie Glen is less pink. Maybelline Born With It is a bit pinker.
• Beach Sand is a palem peachy tan with subtle shimmer and opaque color coverage. It has a cremesheen finish. It’s paler than Dolce & Gabbana Nude.
• Pillow Talk is a light-medium beige brown with a subtle shimmer-sheen. IT’s opaque in color coverage. It has a cremesheen finish. Guerlain Ne M’oubliez Pas is a bit rosier. NARS Pago Pago is a little less beige. Laura Mercier Sandcastle is more beige.
• Sweet Sunrise is an ultra pale white-pink with semi-opaque color coverage. It has a lustre finish. It’s less opaque and pinker compared to MAC Fleshpot. Maybelline Born With It is a bit darker. MAC Hue is less pink and warmer. It’s not quite as warm-toned as MAC Playing Koi.

MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no taste. On average, I get four hours of wear with them, but it often depends on the finish. Finishes like satins and amplifies tend to have better color coverage and wear for four to six hours, sometimes longer, depending on the hue. Two finishes present here–Cremesheens and Lustres–I find drying, with Lustres being more drying than Cremesheens. Lustres tend to wear off in two to three hours for me, unfortunately, likely due to the additional slip in the finish (which can create some unevenness with ultra pale shades like Sweet Sunrise.

MAC Naturally: Mineralize Eyeshadows

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.07oz.) make an appearance in the Naturally collection as well, with five new and limited edition shades to choose from: Cloudy Afternoon (cream with gold, grey, and pink veining), Daylight (peach with dirty blue lavender veining), In the Sun (gold with violet veining), Summer Haze (palest gold with deeper gold veining), and Twilight Falls (cool brown with bronze veining).

• Cloudy Afternoon is a slightly gray-brown with a silvered edge. It has a frosted finish. When applied dry, it looks less brown and has some sheerness, while when applied damp, it holds together better. I applied this to my lid, and it looked mostly gray, because it tends to lose the character it takes on when applied damp once it dries down and “settles” in a way. theBalm Selfish is darker and browner. NARS Grand Palais is browner. More like Bobbi Brown Rockstar, which had subpar pigmentation.
• Daylight is a pinked lavender with a frosted finish that turns more metallic when it is applied damp. It had good color payoff both wet and dry, though. MAC Circa Plum has more purple. MAC Tendersmoke is smokier.
• In the Sun is burnished copper with gold sparkle. The pigmentation is good both wet and dry, but it has a grittier consistency, which I suspect is partially due to the larger sparkle used in this. I would anticipate some fall out with this shade as well. MAC Red Hot Copper is similar in color. MAC Coppering is more intense and coppery.
• Summer Haze is a beige champagne with a metallic finish. It takes on a darker quality when it is applied wet, but the color payoff is nice both wet and dry. The beige in Chanel Eclosion is similar but a bit darker and has a subtler finish. MAC Sweet Satisfaction looks darker because it has less of a metallic sheen.
• Twilight Falls is a dark, almost sooty, brown with subtle teal sparkle. It’s softer when applied dry compared to the result when applied wet, but the payoff is decent both ways. Urban Decay Busted is more intense. theBalm Silly is more burgundy. theBalm Caught in the Act Courtney is also similar.

I tested out three of the five shades by wearing them in a look yesterday for ten hours: I wore Summer Haze on the inner two-thirds of the lid with Cloudy Afternoon on the outer third of the lid and Twilight Falls in the crease. There was noticeable fading after six hours when used over a primer (fading after four hours, creasing after six without a primer), which has always been a major issue for me when it comes to the Mineralize product line as the wear never seems to last a full work day (eight to nine hours). There was also a fair amount of fall out underneath my eyes. I feel like these get better each year, especially texturally, but I’m still missing the wear. When an eyeshadow fades over primer and used wet, it’s just not a product that endears itself!

The texture is soft, and only In the Sun felt a little rougher, almost gritty, from the sparkle. If you’re normally a fan of Mineralize Eyeshadows, I imagine you’ll enjoy these–they feel a little softer without being powdery than previous iterations. If you’re less of a fan but like your colors soft, you may not mind the faded look of these. For me, especially when shelling out $20 a pop as I did with these, I want true color for at least a day of wear.

If you're less of a fan but like your colors soft, you may not mind the faded look of these. MAC Naturally: Subtle Breeze Mineralize Blush

MAC Subtle Breeze Mineralize Blush ($22.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “blue-pink.” It’s a cool-toned, blue-based pink with a subtle pink glow. NYX English Rose is a bit lighter. Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink is less blue-based. MAC Briar Rose looks similar on cheeks, though a bit cooler-toned.  Though it does lean cool, I found it very wearable on my warmer complexion.  It has good color payoff without being too intense, so it’s buildable but workable without having to use a very light hand.

The texture is soft like silk without being powdery, so it’s easy to apply, extremely blendable, and the finish is incredibly natural and glowy. It’s not high-shine or lots of sheen and shimmer. I tested out Subtle Breeze from this collection for wear, and it lasted for around six hours before it started to look noticeably faded on my normal-to-dry skin. I’ve never had good luck with getting MAC’s mineralize products to wear all day on me, unfortunately.

	It has such a beautiful texture that looks even more beautiful when worn--I just wish it would wear longer than six hours! The color payoff is nice but the powder is blendable, so you can get the concentration of color you prefer with ease.

MAC Naturally: Fresh Honey Mineralize Blush

MAC Fresh Honey Mineralize Blush ($22.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “warm apricot.” It’s more like a softened orange, but it packs a rather orange punch overall. I used it very lightly, because it seemed to go very, very orange, and it wasn’t a particularly flattering look on my warm-toned skin. Thankfully, the texture is soft enough to be forgiving and blendable. It’s similar to MAC My Highland Honey, which is just a touch more peach. Illamasqua Lover is a bit pinker.

The powder feels so, so soft, but of the three from this collection, Fresh Honey was on the powdery side. There was a lot of excess powder kicked up when I tapped my brush against the surface. Even applied, it had a more noticeable texture on the skin than the other two did, though it is still quite lovely and subtle–just not as much as the other two. I tested out Subtle Breeze from this collection for wear, and it lasted for around six hours before it started to look noticeably faded on my normal-to-dry skin. I’ve never had good luck with getting MAC’s mineralize products to wear all day on me, unfortunately.

MAC Naturally: Early Morning Mineralize Blush

MAC Early Morning Mineralize Blush ($22.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “peachy pink.” There’s not much peach in this, to be honest; it doesn’t seem to come through at all! Instead, it’s more like a medium-dark coral-pink with hints of red. It’s not as pink as theBalm Frat Boy or as orange as Chanel Tweed Brun Rose.  The pigmentation is nice, but it’s soft enough that it can be easily diffused and blended out for a softer look.  You don’t need an exceptionally light hand to work with it either, which makes it more user-friendly.

The texture of this collection’s Mineralize Blushes is really lovely; beyond finely-milled, so the powder is soft, smooth, and feels like silk against the skin. With a very natural finish (think barely-there glow), the color lies beautifully against the skin. It’s really the way these feel and look on the skin that make them sing. I tested out Subtle Breeze from this collection for wear, and it lasted for around six hours before it started to look noticeably faded on my normal-to-dry skin. I’ve never had good luck with getting MAC’s mineralize products to wear all day on me, unfortunately.
