MAC Surf Baby: Dupes & Comparisons (Part 2)

Here are some possible dupes/comparisons for a few of the lip and cheek products from Surf Baby.

• GIRL ON BOARD is a little beiger than Almondine (limited edition), while it’s a little whiter than A Quiet Roar (limited edition). Outer Space (limited edition) is too pink in comparison (it looked similar in the tube!).
• KRAZY KAHUNA is closest to is much browner than Temper Tantra (limited edition).
• STRANGE POTION is a little lighter than both Tarlette (limited edition) and Splendid (limited edition). Pink Lemonade (permanent) may make a good dupe, but I don’t own it.
• BUST OUT! is closest to Up the Amp (permanent), which is a touch lighter and purpler. Playtime (limited edition) is far too light and purple, while Style Curve (limited edition) is lighter and pinker. Spitfire (limited edition) is pinker and a little brighter. Violetta (PRO) is nothing like it.
• NATURALLY ECCENTRIC is pretty much lighter than the nudes I tried to compare it to. Innocence Beware (limited edition) is darker and pinker, while Hue (permanent) is a little darker and pinker (but lighter than Innocence Beware). Creme d’Nude (permanent) looks dark and beige-pink compared to it. Fleshpot (permanent) is darker and pinker, while Myth is darker and more beige.
• MY PARADISE (base color) is not at all like either Bite of an Apple (limited edition) or Marine Life (limited edition). It also does not compare to either NARS Taj Mahal (permanent) or NARS Exhibit A (permanent), the latter being the closest dupe, but it’s very, very red.
• MY PARADISE (mixed) is closest to NARS Luster, which is a little pinker (it doesn’t look as apparent in the swatch, but when I initially swatched the two, it looked pinker to me). NARS Taj Mahal is so much more pigmented and deeper that there really is no comparison.

Teal & Yellow Look with MAC Surf Baby

Quickie look I did to test out some of the new products from MAC’s Surf Baby collection.

You will need the following…

• Eyes:  NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base (eyeshadow base), MAC Surf USA Eyeshadow (teal), MAC Sun Blonde Eyeshadow (golden mustard yellow), MAC Short Shorts Eyeshadow (white gold), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow (highlighter), MAC Blue Moon Powerpoint Pencil (teal), Hourglass Film Noir Mascara (black)
• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Burberry Pressed Powder (03)
• Cheeks: MAC Billionaire Bronze Powder (bronze)
• Lips: MAC Bust Out! Lipstick (purple)
• Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 222 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pencil brush), 188 (small, circular stippling brush)
• Substitutes: Surf USA = Shimmermoss; Sun Blonde = Goldmine + Arena; Short Shorts = Nylon; My Paradise = NYX Menage a Trois; Bust Out = Up the Amp

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof all over the lid and above the crease with the 242 to lay down your eyeshadow base.   Lightly press Surf USA eyeshadow onto the lower half of the lid, going horizontally, with the 239.  Then apply Sun Blonde eyeshadow on the upper half of the lid and above the crease with the 239.  Apply Short Shorts eyeshadow underneath the arch of the brow, and then mix with Trench eyeshadow to highlight the brow bone.  Next, apply Blue Moon liner on the lower lash line, and then smudge with Short Shorts eyeshadow.  Coat lashes with Film Noir mascara to finish the look.

For cheeks, apply My Paradise blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Bust Out! lipstick for a complementing lip.

MAC My Paradise Surf Baby Cheek Powder

MAC My Paradise Surf Baby Cheek Powder ($28.00 for 0.42 oz.) is described as a “peach pressed powder with gold hibiscus flower overspray.” I would consider it more like an overlay than an overspray, because it’s a significant amount of gold laid on top of the actual powder. I had to rub away a good deal to see whether it went through or not, and then wised up and dug out an actual chunk (as shown later in this post) to show that underneath is the darker orange-red. The base color of the blush is a brightened, medium-dark orange red, and the gold overspray mixes in to create a soft orange with an orange-gold shimmer and sheen.

The texture is decent but has this thin, dusty feel–despite being pigmented, the color dusts away easily, which means that it also blends out that way. Depending on how much of the overspray you get on the brush, the shimmer content will go up or down (and the less shimmer you get, the darker the color will be, too). I do recommend going easy on the overspray, because it adds up quickly.  You’re getting a good amount of product, though–nearly triple the size of your typical blush.

	The warmth of the gold overspray combined with the orangeness of the blush itself will make this blush more suitable for warmer skin tones but with enough of the gold overspray, it might just be peachy enough to work on cooler skin tones.
