10 Shades of Diablo 3

For all my gamer readers–I know what you’re doing this week!  I haven’t played yet, but I am excited to try it out!

MAC Fashion Sets: Lipstick Review Round-up

In the collection, the lipsticks, on average, were the strongest product. The quality of MAC’s lipstick range is definitely there, particularly with their core, permanent shades. The permanent shades are often overlooked because of the neverending onslaught of limited edition shades coming out each month (and sometimes each week!). Many of these shades have been around for several years and have proven to be bestselling shades for the brand for good reason.  I would recommend the lipstick over the matching lipgloss and nail lacquer for every single shade (which is not to say I recommend every single lipstick, period).

These shades did the best when it came to pigmentation. They’re rich, pigmented, and pretty much opaque across the board, with some being totally and utterly opaque and others being nearly opaque. When it comes to the overall quality and claims, these do well, but some finishes are more drying than others. I don’t find MAC to have moisturizing lipsticks, but for the most part, they are not drying either. Lustres and cremesheen finishes are the most drying for me, while mattes and satins can be slightly drying depending on the individual shade. Frosts are neither drying nor hydrating in my experience.

Generally, lighter shades (think Angel, Myth, Snob, etc.) will not wear as long or as well as richer, deeper shades (think Girl About Town, Rebel, Russian Red, etc.), as those deeper shades (combined with their finish) lead to six hour wear as a result of staining–and staining may be good or bad depending on your preference. Lighter shades typically wear three to four hours with deeper shades lasting four to six hours–and this is based on experience of over a hundred MAC lipsticks over the years. I’m pretty sure it’s way more than that, but I’m not going to guarantee it.

The best shades were:  Girl About Town, Morange, and Russian Red (all As).  Good but not great shades were:  Peachstock, Please Me, Rebel, and Spice.  The most under-performing shades were:  Myth and Razzledazzler.

Availability: Based on the information I have received from MAC, the distribution of these shades is regional. I cannot confirm the extent of non-regional shades being available online for your region (e.g. whether all of these will be available on the UK website). I can confirm only that for North America, all shades are available for purchase online. Only the North America-specific shades will be available in-stores on May 3rd, 2012. Select Macy’s will also carry Latin America & Middle East region-specific shades.

MAC Morange Lipglass, Lipstick, Nail Lacquer

MAC Morange Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) has been such a top-seller that it has now inspired a Lipglass ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) and Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) to complement it. This shade is part of the Asia Pacific, Europe/Africa, and Latin America/Middle East portions of the collection, but it will be available online for North American buyers. Morange is described as “bright cream orange.”

The three products all coordinate and match very well!  The nail lacquer has just the right mix of orange and red, brightness and depth, to match the lipgloss and lipstick.   When you layer the gloss over the lipstick, you get a really rich, glossy orange lip that’s opaque and lush.  While sometimes the heavier consistency of Lipglass doesn’t play well with other lipsticks, it works well here.

Morange Lipglass is a rich, medium-dark orange with a fair amount of brightness. It applies opaque, and while the thicker consistency of the formula allows some of the product to settle into lip lines, it isn’t very noticeable because of the color’s opacity. The reason why Morange stands out is because this is a truer orange–there isn’t very much red in it. MAC Knockout is darker and redder. MAC Caqui is darker and redder, though not as red as Knockout. Illamaqua Temper is just slightly redder and a touch darker–same with OCC Safety Orange. (9, 10, 9, 9, 4.5, 4; A-)

Morange Lipstick is a vibrant, medium-dark orange with a subtle sheen. It is an amplified creme finish, and it is part of the permanent range. It is very opaque, and it applies fairly evenly and easily. This shade has three close cousins: MAC Good to Go, MAC Neon Orange, and Illamasqua Flare.  It’s a very classic shade by MAC–though perhaps not classic as in timeless!  (10, 10, 9, 9, 5, 4; A)

Morange Nail Lacquer is a brightened, medium-dark orange with a cream finish. It’s was opaque after two coats, and it had a smooth, fluid consistency that applied evenly. MAC Oriele Orange is slightly redder. MAC Kid ORange is redder. Essie Braziliant is darker and redder. Essie Vermillionaire is very similar, perhaps a little darker. (10, 10, 10, 9, 5, 4; A)

MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. Amplified creme finishes like Morange typically wear four to six hours on me, with richer shades like this one wearing about five hours. This particular finish is not particularly moisturizing, but I don’t find it drying either. MAC Lipglasses are also vanilla-scented but taste-free. They are very sticky and have a thick, borderline-goopy consistency. If you prefer gel-like, cushion-y glosses that feel lightweight on, I don’t recommend MAC Lipglass. Because of the tackier texture, MAC Lipglasses do tend to wear a full four hours on me, with some of the darker shades lasting up to six hours (with mostly the color lingering at that point).

Note: I am reviewing each “set” together. After I’ve reviewed all sixteen sets, I will do round-ups for each product type (so all lipsticks together) to deliver an overall Glossover rating. This rating is more indicative of the product type, as the rating that follows this post is an average across three totally different types of products. You can also see the individual scores listed after each product, which are listed in the same order as they are in the Glossover.

The Glossover

	If you find orange a little too warm, try mixing it with a fuchsia or red--you'll get either more of a coral hue or burnt orange kind of color that may be more wearable. This color pairs well with golds and coppers, but it is definitely a shade that can stand alone.

MAC for Iris Apfel: Lipsticks

There are four limited edition (and one permanent) shades of MAC Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) in the Iris Apfel collection: Flamingo (light milky bright coral), Morange (loudmouth orange), Party Parrot (bright red-pink), Pink Pigeon (bright cleanest pink), and Scarlet Ibis (bright orange-red).

• Flamingo is a pink with a hint of coral that yields semi-opaque color coverage, which is more coverage than your average lustre finish gives. It has that natural-looking sheen that you’d expect from a lustre as well. This has a lustre finish. It’s lighter than MAC Blossom Culture. It’s less intense but close in hue compared to MAC Ever Hip. It’s similar to Guerlain Rose Desir.
• Morange is a bright, medium orange with a subtle sheen to the finish and opaque color coverage. This has an amplified creme finish and is part of the permanent range. It’s similar to oranges like MAC Good to Go, MAC Neon Orange, and Illamasqua Flare.
• Party Parrot is a neon medium-dark pink with a natural matte finish and opaque color coverage. This has a matte finish. VS Be Mine is less intense. Lancome Posh Pink is not quite as bright. OCC Queen is redder. MAC Scandelicious is similar but glossier. MAC Full Fuchsia is bluer-based. Tom Ford Pure Pink is a bit pinker.
• Pink Pigeon is a bright magenta pink with a natural matte finish. It has opaque color coverage. This has a matte finish. Milani Rose Hip is brighter and pinker, MAC Florida is lighter, MAC Show Orchid is slightly pinker, MAC Candy Yum Yum is purpler and brighter, NARS Schiap is pinker, and MAC Love Forever is not as bright.
• Scarlet Ibis is a reddened orange with a natural matte finish and full color coverage. This has a matte finish. It’s a little redder compared to Givenchy Candide Tangerine. It is similar to Giorgio Armani #405 with a matte finish. Estee Lauder Wild Fire is a touch lighter. Dolce & Gabbana Sheer is similar but a touch brighter.

MAC lipsticks come in a variety of finishes, so the color payoff, texture, and wear can vary based on the finish alone. In this collection, we have mostly mattes. The matte formula on these is comfortable to wear without being drying; I actually would have pegged them as amplified cremes or satins, because they didn’t cling like some of MAC’s original matte finishes do (think Ruby Woo; none of these are similar in texture). Lustres tend to wear off quickly and dry out my lips, so they’re not my favorite finish. Amplified cremes are really opaque, creamy, and comfortable to wear. Because of the intensity of the pigmentation in these shades (except Flamingo), these will wear longer and have a tendency to stain. I’ve worn Morange for six hours in the past, and I tested out Scarlet Ibis for wear, and it wore for six hours and left a bit of a stain. MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free.

	These are really nice matte finishes--they're not dry or difficult to apply! If you love your lipstick bright and opaque, you'll probably enjoy these offerings from MAC for winter/spring.

This is just a totally fun look for summer.  It’s shimmery and bright – it’s very simple, but it’s a little over the top and… just fun.

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Bright Sunshine eyeshadow on the inner two-thirds of the lid. Lightly blend Bio Green eyeshadow on the outer third of the lid with the 239. Next, apply Blue Calm eyeshadow into the crease with the 226, lightly blending onto the outer lid.  Blend Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow with the crease shade very lightly, and then highlight the brow bone with Mylar eyeshadow. Bring everything together by applying Deviant liner on the lower lash line, then pat Blue Calm eyeshadow to smudge and blend out with the 219. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Sun Kissed bronzer on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116, then lightly pat Amber Diamond on the cheekbones.

For lips, lightly pat on Morange lipstick very, very sheerly, and then layer Easy Lounger lipglass for a complementing lip.
