MAC Apres Chic: Mineralize Eyeshadows

MAC Apres Chic Mineralize Eyeshadows ($21.00 for 0.07 oz.) includes five new (and limited edition) shades: Fireside (deep plum with purple veining), Frost at Midnight (deep blue/grey with grey veining), Ice (light peach base with white veining), Silver Birch (grey base with peach veining), and Winter Pursuit (copper base with grey veining).

Fireside is a reddish-brown base with a bluish-teal duochrome. The color payoff dry is lackluster, so I’d recommend using it with a damp or wet brush, where it is more pigmented. This color is one of the more popular shades that brands seem to have–MAC has two within the permanent range (Blue Brown pigment, Club eyeshadow). Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone #8 has a very similar shade with a stronger duochrome. bareMinerals Mirage is a bit darker but similar. MAC Double Feature #5 included a similar shade. Urban Decay Lounge is very similar–same amount of red in the base color as well as duochrome. Of all of those, I prefer bareMinerals’ formula with Urban Decay’s as a second-place finish.

Frost at Midnight is a navy blue with a purplish tint. It has a frosted finish, and the pigmentation is better wet than dry, where it is rather sheer and faded. This shade had the worst pigmentation out of the five; it was still lacking in intensity when used damp. MAC Hint of Sapphire is darker, grayer. Inglot #434 is more muted, less blue. Cinderella Midnight is darker.

Ice is a warm, pale champagne-shimmered peach with a very high-frost, high-metallic finish. It had so-so pigmentation when used dry, but it has some powderiness and fall out problems if you use it wet, compared to damp, where it binds together better. MAC A Natural Flirt is warmer, pinker. NARS Ramatuelle is less metallic. bareMinerals Mixologist is very similar–more metallic than frosted.

Silver Birch is a dirty pewter; it has gray, gold, and brownish-black in it. This shade had the most nuance to it, out of the five, but the payoff was weak when used dry. When applied damp, it was nicely pigmented and applied more smoothly. MAC Modern Pewter is lighter, warmer. Wet ‘n’ Wild Dancing in the Clouds is lighter, more golden.

Winter Pursuit is a warm, medium-dark copper that has a rosy-red tint that gives it a more muted appearance–not so orange-copper. It has a very frosted, metallic-like finish. This shade had the best color payoff of the five–it could be used both wet and dry, though dry is so-so in payoff. MAC Star Myth is more orange. MAC Magnetic Attraction is redder. MAC Mythical is a bit redder.

Long-time readers will know that I LOVE looking and photographing Mineralize Eyeshadows, but I’m not a fan of them in practice. They tend to have fall out problems, and they usually fade more quickly, with or without a primer. The Mineralize Eyeshadows we’ve seen over the past couple of years are definitely improved compared to the initial release, but I still have both problems. These shades gave me the same two problems, though fall out was less than usual. When I use these wet, as I did with all of the shades I wore (Ice, Silver Birch, and Frost at Midnight), there was noticeable fading within three hours. Frost at Midnight looked mostly gray by eight hours, while the lightest shade, Ice was barely visible. Finally, Silver Birch had faded but was still visible.

Silver Birch was the most interesting/unique out of the five. At a glance, Fireside seems really interesting, and the color is beautiful and lovely, but it’s a commonly produced shade by a variety of brands. As always, if you don’t have the wear problems I encounter with the Mineralize Eyeshadows, then the biggest drawback of these becomes the weak color payoff when used dry (so omitting wear, these would be more like a B-rated product). The texture was soft but some shades were less smooth, as the sparkle was more noticeable.

MAC Heavenly Creatures Mineralize Eyeshadows

MAC Heavenly Creatures Mineralize Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.06 oz.) features nine shades: Aurora (peach, green, brown melange), Bright Moon (grey, silver, icy green melange), Earthly (beige, peach, cool brown melange), Invincible Light (icy white, lavender, warm gold melange), Magnetic Attraction (orange, pink, gold melange), Neo Nebula (cream, warm amethyst, warm pink melange), Sky (green-gold, turquoise, cobalt melange), Universal Appeal (gold, bronze, violet melange), and Water (yellow, lime green, blue melange).

Aurora is a warm, golden medium-dark brown with a soft champagne sheen. It has swirls of light yellow-toned pink, dirty olive brown, and red-brown. It’s on the sheer side when applied dry, but it’s more opaque when applied wet. Dior Aurora is slightly darker. Buxom Golden Retriever is a touch darker, more red-toned. MAC Heavenly Bliss is a bit lighter, less warm. MAC Love Connection is more frosted, so it looks a bit lighter and more metallic. Milani Fusion is slightly more metallic.
Bright Moon is a cool-toned silver-shimmered gray-blue. It has swirls of gray-blue, silver, and aqua-blue. When applied dry, it has good color payoff, and when it’s applied dry, it has better pigmentation and applies more smoothly. The metallic finish is more apparent when it is used wet. It looks just like MAC Frozen Blue, which might be a smidgen more silver, but they’re really close. Urban Decay Crystal is less blue.
Earthly is a gray-tinted medium-dark brown with a pearly metallic sheen. The swirls are gray-beige, copper, and dark brown. It has good color payoff both wet and dry. MAC Caviar Dreams is a bit darker. Bare Escentuals A-Ha is warmer, darker. MAC Magical Mist is similar but more subdued.
Invincible Light is a pale warm pink with a subtle golden shimmer. It’s pretty sheer when applied dry and better when applied wet, but it isn’t as smooth as I’d like–slightly gritty. It has swirls of ivory, copper, pink, and lavender. MAC Star Crystal is grayer. Bobbi Brown Black Ruby is pinker.
Magnetic Attraction is a coppery coral-red with subtle golden shimmer. It has decent to good pigmentation when used dry (it looks more orange), and great color payoff when used wet. It has swirls of raspberry pink, golden yellow, and coppery orange. MAC Spicy Smoke is more intense. Milani I Heart You is redder. MAC In the Sun is darker, browner. MAC Red Hot Copper is similar but darker. MAC Coppering is more intense.
Neo Nebula is a slightly mauve-y pink with a metallic finish. It has swirls of light pink, medium warm pink, and mauvy plum. When used dry, it’s very sheer, but when used wet, it’s smoother and more pigmented. MAC Rose Light is slightly pinker. Inglot #399 is pinker and darker. Giorgio Armani #7 is more muted. MAC Pink Union is slightly more purple and darker. MAC Circa Plum is darker, grayer.
Sky is a faded blue with a hint of green with a green-gold shimmer. It has swirls of light-medium green, electric blue, and cobalt blue. The color payoff is sheer when used dry, and it’s better when wet, but it’s still not fully opaque. Urban Decay Shattered is a bit more teal. Guerlain Les Ombres de Nuit doesn’t have the same gold shimmer.
Universal Appeal is a smoky eggplant purple with golden shimmer. It has swirls of yellowy green, dark brown, orange, and purple. When applied dry, it’s very brown and on the sheer side, while when wet, it takes on a purple hue. MAC Azuki Bean is a smidgen darker. theBalm Curvy Cami is purpler.
Water is a dark but muted blue-green. It has swirls of yellowy chartreuse, chartreuse, mint green, and navy blue. The color payoff is atrocious when used dry, and it’s decent when used wet. Illamasqua Android is much more opaque and intense. Urban Decay Hijack is more opaque and intense. Urban Decay Loaded is more intense, more blackened in base color.

Whenever I have Mineralize Eyeshadows to review, I think it’s important disclose that I generally do not have a lot of success with them. They always look absolutely phenomenal in the pan; they’re amazing products to photograph, but application tends to be disappointing. I know that there are readers who, on the other hand, enjoy these eyeshadows immensely and look forward to the mineralize-themed collections that MAC puts out. The reasons I don’t like these is: lack of color payoff, fall out, and poor wear (fading/creasing, mostly fading). Not all shades perform the same; some are better, some are way worse.

I did three looks, where I used three shades for each one. When I wore Bright Moon, Sky, and Earthly together, they held up so-so over time. There was noticeable fading, slight creasing with Bright Moon after six hours, while Sky was less faded and no real creasing to speak off. Earthly was fairly faded. I had about the same results whether I applied over bare lids or over a primer (NARS Smudgeproof). Sky stains the lid, even when used over a primer.

When I wore Magnetic Attraction, Aurora, and Water in a look, they, too, held up okay but not well. Magnetic Attraction was the best, with only minor fading but no creasing after eight hours. Aurora was looking faded after eight hours, while Water was barely visible–not to mention it was such a pain to apply and to get to show up at all from the very beginning. The texture and feel of Water just didn’t work well; it was a little gritty and dry. The wear didn’t seem to improve with or without a primer; both were in the same state after eight hours. Water also stains the skin, just as a heads up.

The last trio I used included Invicible Light, Neo Nebula, and Universal Appeal. Invincible Light is very prone to fall out, and it can accentuate any texture on the lids, because it doesn’t apply smoothly. I was able to get plenty of color out of it by using it wet, but it did have some of its own problems. Neo Nebula and Universal Appeal were easier to use on the lid. However, the whole look lasted about five hours and had nearly disappeared after eight hours–and the photos are of the shades over primer (and the eye without primer looked the same).

It’s a shame that there were wear issues with these. I thought a lot of these were more blendable this time around than in previous releases. Some shades had decent to good color payoff when dry, as well as wet. None of it lasted a full eight hours, though, and some were nearly gone entirely after eight hours. I don’t know if there are many products that I’m as desperate to fall in love with as MAC’s Mineralize Eyeshadows. They look gorgeous in their pots. They’re absolutely stunning to behold. I know people love them. I want to love them, but I just can’t.

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows for 2012

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) now include: Blue Flame (mineralize black with blue pearl), Cinderfella (mineralize black with silver pearl), Gilt by Association (mineralize black with gold bronze pearl), Smutty Green (cream, warm green, black veining), and Young Punk (mineralize black with pinkish purple pearl). With the exception of Smutty Green, these were originally limited shades that have been brought back for a stint as permanent products. At least once a year, MAC rotates in new mineralize eyeshadows that become permanent for a time, and these are five of ten shades that are now available.

Blue Flame is a rich navy blue over a blue-black base. When it’s used dry, the black base is more prevalent, while when it is used damp, the blue sheen comes out. MAC Naval Blue is bluer with a lighter base. MAC Shop & Drop is similar but has a subtler sheen. MAC Blue Storm is bluer with a lighter base.
Cinderfella is a brown-black with a silver-gray shimmer. When it is applied dry, it has a chalkier, sheerer look that makes it appear more muted, but when it is applied damp, it appears smoother, more intense, and the black stands out. Chanel Mirifique is the only dupe that comes to mind, though it is a bit different.
Gilt by Association is a rich, dark olive brown with olive gold shimmer. Again, when it is applied dry, it has a softer, slightly muted look, but when it is applied damp, it looks much more intense and the metallic sheen comes to the forefront. MAC Golden Gaze is yellower and more golden. I couldn’t think of any other dupes.
Smutty Green is a blackened-green base with green and dirty green shimmer. It has rather sheer, uneven color payoff when used dry, but it comes together better when applied wet. It seems awfully similar to MAC She Who Dares, perhaps with more black in it. Make Up For Ever #10 is similar in tone, but it’s not nearly as dark.
Young Punk is a blackened-purple base with pink-toned purple shimmer and sheen. When it is applied dry, it looks like a sheer, chalky black with purple shimmer, but when it is applied damp, it looks much more purple and the metallic sheen comes forth. Urban Decay Rockstar is kind of similar but more eggplant-hued. Giorgio Armani #2 has a similar black base but has pink and red shimmer.

I wish I could say this latest batch of Mineralize Eyeshadows was new and improved, but I still had issues with color staying true throughout the day and fall out both during and post-application. The textures of the shades that have been out previously did seem softer, smoother, so the color payoff was better overall. Even when I apply Mineralize Eyeshadows damp/wet and over a primer, the colors look faded after a few hours and any shade with shimmer or sparkles leads to fall out throughout the day. I did a test look using Gilt by Association and Smutty Green, and my under eye area looked like a disco ball.

	I know some readers love Mineralize Eyeshadows, and I really and truly wish I could discover the same love for them myself. I'm probably nearing 100 of them and only use them when I have to test them! I like that the blackened base doesn't take over when these are used wet, at least.

MAC Naturally: Mineralize Eyeshadows

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.07oz.) make an appearance in the Naturally collection as well, with five new and limited edition shades to choose from: Cloudy Afternoon (cream with gold, grey, and pink veining), Daylight (peach with dirty blue lavender veining), In the Sun (gold with violet veining), Summer Haze (palest gold with deeper gold veining), and Twilight Falls (cool brown with bronze veining).

Cloudy Afternoon is a slightly gray-brown with a silvered edge. It has a frosted finish. When applied dry, it looks less brown and has some sheerness, while when applied damp, it holds together better. I applied this to my lid, and it looked mostly gray, because it tends to lose the character it takes on when applied damp once it dries down and “settles” in a way. theBalm Selfish is darker and browner. NARS Grand Palais is browner. More like Bobbi Brown Rockstar, which had subpar pigmentation.
Daylight is a pinked lavender with a frosted finish that turns more metallic when it is applied damp. It had good color payoff both wet and dry, though. MAC Circa Plum has more purple. MAC Tendersmoke is smokier.
In the Sun is burnished copper with gold sparkle. The pigmentation is good both wet and dry, but it has a grittier consistency, which I suspect is partially due to the larger sparkle used in this. I would anticipate some fall out with this shade as well. MAC Red Hot Copper is similar in color. MAC Coppering is more intense and coppery.
Summer Haze is a beige champagne with a metallic finish. It takes on a darker quality when it is applied wet, but the color payoff is nice both wet and dry. The beige in Chanel Eclosion is similar but a bit darker and has a subtler finish. MAC Sweet Satisfaction looks darker because it has less of a metallic sheen.
Twilight Falls is a dark, almost sooty, brown with subtle teal sparkle. It’s softer when applied dry compared to the result when applied wet, but the payoff is decent both ways. Urban Decay Busted is more intense. theBalm Silly is more burgundy. theBalm Caught in the Act Courtney is also similar.

I tested out three of the five shades by wearing them in a look yesterday for ten hours: I wore Summer Haze on the inner two-thirds of the lid with Cloudy Afternoon on the outer third of the lid and Twilight Falls in the crease. There was noticeable fading after six hours when used over a primer (fading after four hours, creasing after six without a primer), which has always been a major issue for me when it comes to the Mineralize product line as the wear never seems to last a full work day (eight to nine hours). There was also a fair amount of fall out underneath my eyes. I feel like these get better each year, especially texturally, but I’m still missing the wear. When an eyeshadow fades over primer and used wet, it’s just not a product that endears itself!

The texture is soft, and only In the Sun felt a little rougher, almost gritty, from the sparkle. If you’re normally a fan of Mineralize Eyeshadows, I imagine you’ll enjoy these–they feel a little softer without being powdery than previous iterations. If you’re less of a fan but like your colors soft, you may not mind the faded look of these. For me, especially when shelling out $20 a pop as I did with these, I want true color for at least a day of wear.

MAC Glitter & Ice Mineralize Eyeshadows

MAC Glitter & Ice Beauty Mineralize Eyeshadows ($21.00 for 0.07 oz. each) include six limited edition shades: Fresh Ice (white silver melange), Frozen Blue (blue silver melange), Hold That Pose! (pale mauve melange), Shimmermint (pale green melange), Snow Season (soft taupe melange), and Winterized (dirty purple with silver, indigo, and pink melange). The collection is slated to hit stores on October 27th.

Fresh Ice is a cool-toned, icy pink with a strong, white frost. When applied dry, it’s a little powdery and semi-opaque, but when applied damp, it’s much smoother and opaque. I couldn’t think of a dupe for this one–everything I thought of was darker, pinker, or too purple. It is a little reminiscent of Pink Opal pigment, but it’s cooler-toned and doesn’t have the duochrome shimmer of Pink Opal.
Frozen Blue is a bluish-gray with a frosted finish. Like Fresh Ice, it comes together when applied damp, though it’s still less than fully pigmented when used damp. Urban Decay Crystal is similar in color but suffers from payoff problems as well. It’s much lighter and less brown compared to MAC Hint of Sapphire.
Hold That Pose! is a grayish mauve with a frosted finish that borders on metallic when it is applied damp. It’s a little gritty to work with, and it was still on the sheerer side when applied damp. It reminded me of theBalm Come Hither. Bare Escentuals Romp is deeper and purpler. MAC Shale is similar but a touch browner.
Shimmermint is more like a minty blue than a minty green with silver sparkle. It’s a cool-toned aqua blue with a touch of gray. It’s very sparkly and frosted. Giorgio Armani Airy Jade is lighter and bluer. Wet ‘n’ Wild Enter a New Realm is less aqua.
Snow Season is a rosy champagne with a golden shimmer and sheen. It has a frosted, almost metallic-like finish. It’s pinker than Urban Decay Sin.
Winterized is a muted plum with brown edges. It has a soft, frosted finish–more of a pearl reflection than lots of shimmer. It is similar to Bare Escentuals Romp. Lancome Zip Me Up is purpler.

I haven’t been a fan of Mineralize Eyeshadows, and these six haven’t converted me yet. I’d love to come to the other side–truly, I would–because they always look so stunning in their pots, but the quality isn’t there for me. Most of these shades were sheer when applied dry, which means you have to use it with a good base, whether it is a sticky cream eyeshadow or water or mixing medium. I find that using it dampened with water helps to give more intense color payoff, but once it dries, it looks faded from how it did initially, and the color continues to fade over the next six to eight hours.

I used three of the six in a look (and over a paint pot) and all three were a faded disappointment after four hours. I’ve tested this product range more than most products by brands, and yet I still find them lacking. I don’t enjoy writing negative reviews–it means I’ve wasted my time and, in this case, my money. I have better results using mixing medium, especially in combating fall out, but it’s still not quite there. I had fall out issues with Hold That Pose! and Shimmermint, while Fresh Ice and Frozen Blue were the best of the six.

P.S. — What’s with all the recycled names? Hold That Pose was a lipstick, while Shimmermint was a shadestick.

	The most frustrating issue with these is the lasting power, even over a base! You shouldn't have to worry about your eyeshadow looking faded after a few hours at this price point. Some of these shades perform better than others, but the fading I found was across the board.
